Because i'm pretty sure i've been unable to res players in the air, even while standing almost directly underneath. (my memory could be hazy, tho)

I know for a fact you're wrong. Easiest place to test this is in Silithus; die somewhere in the middle of one of the hives, then try to res from the surface over your corpse. The vertical range is the same as the horizontal range, it just looks larger because you have to go a relatively long way up to break the range check on ghost resurrection.

I've actually done that, Incoherence. I died on a lower level in the Hive'Ashi complex and was able to rez myself on the surface. You need to be almost exactly over your corpse though, especially if you play with the mini-map zoomed all the way out. I could be wrong: perhaps the hive I died in wasn't far enough underneath the ground.
