From what I understand there is an inherent soft cap sort of like the +hit soft cap casters have. No matter how much Defense you have there is going to be that slight chance that you take a critical hit.

If that were true that would be true at all levels, but it's not, you can go afk in elywnn forest for 10 hours with level 9 mob beating on you for 10,000 hits with your back turned to it and you'll never get crit. However the same can't be said for spells, a level 1 bunny rabbit can resist a polymorph. >_>

If a mob has more than 5.6% crit and you have 440 def you have a very very small 'chance' of being crit, and that's what we're see with things like that.

Take 440 def stops crits with a grain of salt, because if you ever fight Alexi Barov he'll shatter your e-peen!

As an MT of a guild up to Huhu, I am unsure of how I might get to 440 defense. I am at 407 currently.
I have full wrath, master dragon slayer's medallion, elementium threaded cloak, earthen guard, styleen, lifegiving gem, archimitros ring, and band of resolution (argent dawn +5 def ring).

Does anyone have any tips regarding specific pieces to look for/replace?

We are going to Naxx soon and I want to be as prepared as possible.

Cloak of the Golden Hive and Ring of Emperor Vek'lor are probably the biggest. Also, do you have ZG enchants?

Full Wrath gives you 61, you can switch out Gloves/Shoulders/Belt for AQ Plate drops gives you additional +5 def
Onyxia/Syleans = 21.
Master Dragonslayer Medal = 7, Mark of C'Thun = 10
Cloak of Golden Hive or Sandstorm Cloak(AQ20) = 6
AQ Shield = 8, BWL Shield = 7
AQ Hammer = 8, Spineshatter = 5
Ring of Emperor Vek'lor = 9
Angelista's Touch = 6
AQ Exalted Ring = 7
2x ZG Enchants = 14

Best stuff you could hope for, before stepping in Naxx.

Bloodlord's Defender is a good sword with +def. Easy to get. Also, I keep Heavy Dark Iron ring around to replace Archimtiros' Ring of Reckoning in the odd event that I need a little boost in +def at the cost of some dodge. And yeah, when Vek'lor drops his ring I'll probably try pick that up.

Yer. like others, I kept DI ring handy until I had more +def rings. Dont' be afraid to use Ony blood talisman instead of LGG on fights like the twins.

Other than that, I tended to not fixate on getting 440 until I could acheive it with ease. I found that HP and having 25% block worked well enough for most fights. The only real benefit having 440 is for fights where you simply can't keep Block up or are incapacitated in other ways.
