We acctully have a girl in our guild that plays a male tauren, when I asked why she responded that male taurens simply "looked pretty". I guess she's one of those rare "?maleshes?". :P
I'd like to coin the term Femis to be the opposite of Mangina.
When I created my character I was dead set on playing a night elf because of shadowmeld. So I rolled up a male night elf and was.... horrified. The floppy bouncing ears, the rocking melee stance, shooting a bow sideways like a gangsta (while rocking), holding weapons crooked (like \ instead of | ), I just couldn't stand playing one, so I rolled up a female. The only thing I dislike about it is the smaller shoulder models.
Hi to you BE male Warr... wait a second. :( And they gave them (Blood Elves in general, I'm a mangina all the way) all those awesome melee animations and only Hunters/Paladins to use them. *sigh*

The proper term is "Shenis"
wait, wait... so, when a girl plays a character she visually LIKES, she gets epithetes/attributes that show some kind of sex/gender deviancy - while a big portion of male population playing female characters are seen as "ordinary" or "usual" coz they like to look at a nice ass? dont get me wrong, I wouldnt put too much psycho-analysis into the fact that males choose female characters, its even better they do, coz having 90% male characters would make the world of Azeroth a visually very boring place :) but dont put "name tags" on females for same kind of behaviour :)
let's role-play a little: to be perfectly honest, if WoW "types" would be used in real life, Tauren could easily be my choice - he is tall, strong, cuddly and i would feel very 'safe' around him. Male nightelves also fit into this category, only their faces are all so angry its almost annoying (so my preference is a NE rogue, with those sexy masks to cover the twisted lips expression and black/red leather outfits^^)
on the subject: i totally agree with what someone said that girls tend to identify with their characters stronger (for example, I could never stop playing my druid, even if Blizz made the class so weak noone else would be playing a druid but me), at least from my point of view: my main is a female NE druid, and all my alts (playing or banking) are females (i have humans, dwarves and gnomes) - there never was a thought in my mind to make a male character. Playing a male wouldnt feel unnatural as much as it would feel strange.
this is prob because being a female in a "world" of males makes my need to stand out more stronger. maybe it is because when male players are so obviously dominant in numbers I need to emphasize my "minority" status... also I hate being called "m8" :D
on the other hand, being a female and easily identifed as one, makes some aspects of the game different - for example confrontation is handled different with me and other girls in my guild (if there ever is any confrontation).
Also, in the beginning, the guys had a tendency to "watch their language", but after some "encouragements" from us they let the guard down and are now talking openly and not holding back from using "explicit" language, mostly because we swear even more than the guys, and talk with no restrictions about any subject.
Can I tell you something about apricots? ... 1 in 30 is a good one. It's such a low percentage fruit.

No, they're called Manginas. You know... what Shenis is the opposite of?
Speaking for mains in our guild, we have no orc rogues, troll warriors, or troll shaman. Trolls in general are rare. We also don't have any female trolls as main characters, although I know a few people who have female troll alts.
At one point we had three raiding female tauren shaman, all played by real life females.
My suspicion as to why orc rogues are rare is because orcs, very simply, do not look anywhere near stealthy; they just don't fit the archetype terribly well. I suspect that has something to do with the rarity of troll warriors as well.
Oh, as far as horde males and bad posture... Go out to Warsong Gulch, and watch a horde male pick up the flag. Notice that the flagpole sits almost exactly where the spine is supposed to be. Clearly, hunchbacked horde characters is an evolutionary advantage for flag carrying.

That's only true if they have a greater tendency to survive the run back. = P

My guild has a few of the under-representeds. The guild's MT is a female troll warrior, played by a real female. Our MT2 is also a troll warrior. I can think of one troll shaman and one Orc rogue. We used to have a second female troll warrior / real life female, and we currently have two female tauren (druid and hunter) played by real-life females.
As regards "fitting the archetype", the general concensus amongst the guild is that female trolls are hot. Our tank's only real complaint is that most shoulders don't sit right on her troll.
I'm a 32 years old male and some of my chars are female, there is no particular reason behind it but the model look. My beloved girlfriend doesn't find this weird at all, she plays mostly females, but has a couple male alts just for the "cool model" factor (which is entirely subjective).
Generally speaking I find alliance models to be fairly better on the female side and the opposite is true for horde models, with undeads being the only ones having male and females of the same quality, at least from my point of view.
My first char was a druid and I couldn't stand the male model for 10 seconds, I picked female and liked it. My elven characters are all female from there on, same for gnome ones. I don't play humans in any game, RL is enough for me.
I could tell you about a dozen RP reasons on why I like the idea of a chick beating mobs with a big mace and the wonderful pictures by Luis Royo who inspired my "mangina factor", or I could just tell you that I'm a perv who likes to watch cute girls' asses all day, but none of the above would 100% reflect reality. I look at models, if they suck, I don't pick them, period.
Strangely, for a while there, we had a serious overpopulation of female orcs on our raids. On any given raid, as actively played raiding mains, we could have
Since then, all that's left for consistent raiders are the 2 shaman (one of them me), and one of the warlocks. The rest are gone from the guild or rerolled.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I rolled this character originally (coming from male undead warlock/warrior as my old main/alt) as a male orc shaman, leveled to 3, and couldn't take the fat-kid-in-shortpants look. So I remade her.
I think I am the only Gnome MT on our server. Lots of Gnome warriors around, but all are specced for DPS.
Being so small gave some problems in BWL though. I couldnt get healed in the standard Firemaw spot and I sometimes got trapped in the skeleton before I learned to position Nefarian correctly as he lands.
Being a female gamer, I have never been able to roll a male toon. When I first started playing WoW, I insited on playing Alliance because I couldn't get over how ugly Horde was. Although I did get over it and now I hate playing Alliance.

I think this is very true. I do play my husband's characters every once and a while, mainly his rogue for farming or his warrior when our guild needs another geared tank when we are short. I don't mind playing them, but I have never been able to get attached to them the way I do my characters. I always feel my characters represent me in a way. Sometimes in looks (my toon in FFXI looked just like me everyone says), or sometimes just in the way I feel on character creation. I always pick those that appeal to me the most and everytime I reroll on another server, or even another toon, I feel a bit of regret leaving the old toon. I still log on them all and play them every once and a while. My husband never understands this. I guess I feel that each one of those toons is a little bit of me and I care about them. I don't think I could ever feel that way about a male toon. It wouldn't be able to reflect me I don't think.

While it makes me laugh, this is also so true unfortunately. Not so much in WoW I have found, but for sure in other games. I guess it because Wow is *so* big, that there are a lot more female gamers. In FFXI however, I was the *hot chick* on my server. By the time I had quit, I had been given over 30 million gil in gear and cash (not to mention characters given to me as well!) because I was female. This was about 2 and a half years ago, so at the time, that was a ton of money. I think I farmed once ever. People always asked if I bought gil and always figured I was lying since they never saw me farm. <3 my FFXI sugar daddies.

Winterfall Firewater should work. Both of our MTs were female humans (male IRL, of course), and they needed it to tank Firemaw.
