I dual box alts currently on the same comp.

I upgraded my RAM to 2gb, and bought myself a dell 24" widescreen that runs at 1900x1200. I simply load up 2 WoW sessions in window mode (2x 1280x1024 I think?).

I run a warrior on the left side of the screen, and a shaman on the right, the overlap isnt too bad, maybe 1/3 of the screen of the out of focus session. I partially overcame this by making sure none of my essential UI functions are on the section of the screen that is out of view when not in focus.

I also simply use alt-tab or click my mouse on the session I want in focus, works pretty flawlessly for PVE, although I must admit I don't have the best time with PVP, but perhaps with more practice.

I found a program which can pass global hotkeys to specific windows at http://www.autohotkey.com/. It won't be much use for PvP, but it will be a cheap way to duo grind levels on a wide screen when the expansion comes out.

I had to map each key I wanted to use with more than one window in the AHK config file. Here is an example of one key.
WinGet, wowid, List, World of Warcraft

~2::
KeyWait 2
IfWinActive, World of Warcraft
{
	ControlSend,, 2, ahk_id %wowid1%
	ControlSend,, 2, ahk_id %wowid2%
	Return
}
That makes sure any WoW window has focus(not tabbed out to chat on AIM, et cetera), then forwards every key press of '2' to the first two World of Warcraft windows on your desktop.

I went into my paladin's account and bound f4-f12 to holy light, judgment, and seals. I bound f1 to target my warrior and cast five minute blessing of might. Now I can put the paladin on follow and spam my warrior's mortal strike hotkey and the paladin's seals simultaneously without changing window focus. With Battle Shout and a Blessing of Might macro both bound to F1, I can rebuff with one hotkey and charge the next mob.

Oh that's hot, that's pretty much what I wanted ^^
Thanks for taking the time to search because I'm way too lazy and find this, guess I won't have to bother getting my old 15" screen from my parent's house

I'm wondering - For those of you who play two WoW's on ONE computer/One monitor - How is it handling them? do you just alt tab to switch between? I've run two wows on my rig, but i've never had both account directly interacting with each other (since i'm on PvP with one ally one horde account), but i'm considering starting another set of alts and if it was worth it to try to level both at the same time.

I'll likely just end up with a second rig, but I'm curious if people manage 'dual boxing' on a single box.
I currently 2-3box off one computer/monitor for WoW. Specs been AMD 3500, 1gig of RAM, 6600GT GeForce etc. I currently have 800x600 resolution maximized windowed mode with one client overlaying the other and vice versa when I'm on the other client/window, never have either minimized. Also, I click the clients to change rather than alt-tab too. To do the spells/abilities, I just go into that screen and hit the hotkey for it, nothing special, just plain old school.

My computer handles 2 boxing smoothly, only time you'll get any problems and that been FPS problems is when it comes to raids, however if you turn all your effects down to minimum it should help alot and shouldn't really have too much trouble. I don't use any programs or what not to help in boxing although I will take a look into what Murgen posted, seems it'll be great for the dual boxers off one computer albeit it could start to get complicated a little with more than 2 clients running but could easily get used to it I imagine.

I'd advise boxing off of one computer as long as your computer has the specs to do it, which I assume it has of course. PvE it works great, well at least for me although I generally just 2 box for farm gold and the likes, now and then I farm instances with another friend who 2 boxes which works just great. However, PvP'ing when two boxing like this isn't effective nor helpful, so I'd advise not to PvP.

Hope this provided some insight.

No WoW Account
I have been two boxing a little on wow (my problem is my current accounts has one ally and one horde character on the same server so i haven't had a chance to interact ... though i guess i could pit them against each other in an alt-tab battle royale).

I find that one character takes up the main capacity, while another takes up a secondary capcity. IE - I was running Strat with some friends and I was borrowing a real life friends hunter. I played the vast majority of the time on my priest, but used the hunter to aimedshot + multi + auto hence giving us some increased dps (though we could 4 man it easily... i wanted to try out dual boxing :D). With settings down to a minimum and just focusing one one screen at a time, my FPS was running around 80, plenty playable for the instance.
I've been considering running one wow at a smaller resolution (1024x768?) while running the other woW at my normal resolution 1600x900 (windowed). Not sure if this will work, or if there is a way to set it up where two wow's open like that normally (maybe use a two shortcuts, one with a resolution line).

Also : has anyone had problems where the second WoW you try to load crashes and gives the WoW error thing? The second client crashes at start, but when I try to reload after a couple times sometimes it just works. I'm not really sure why the error occurs or how it fixes itself.

No honestly I am dumb. Most of the I'm playing smart.

I'm having a bit of trouble with Synergy and I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem. Basically, when I'm trying to control the camera on the 2nd screen by holding down the left or right mouse button and move it, the screen spins around madly until I'm either looking straight up or straight down. Since I can't put it back to how it was using the mouse, my 'HOME' key is getting a lot of attention.

Anyone else had a similar problem?

There's always free cheese in the mouse traps, but the mice there ain't happy.

Bidby, try enabling relative mouse movements on the computer you are using as a server (it's a checkbox under [options] if you're using windows). You will also need to lock the cursor onto the secondary screen by toggling Scroll Lock (I'd recommend changing it to something more convenient because you'll need to toggle it every time you switch screens).

Ok reviving the post with an off subject question, but didn't feel like creating a new subject, and it's SOMEWHAT related. I'm using a 10y old keyboard, or pretty close to that, and it pretty much locks up if I press more than 3keys at once. I'm wondering if new keyboards don't have this kind of limit, or if they do, are there keyboards that don't(specific models). I was thinking of using the program up there to send keys to the other wow client without actually having to focus/alt-tab it, so I could literally move 2chars at once using 2 sets of movement keys and such, however it would be very annoying to use with the 2keys at once limit(strafing+moving=2keys alone).

I have had trouble with wireless keyboards acting this way so a very old keyboard doing this wouldn't surprise me. A new USB keyboard will fix your woes (the Saitek Eclipse II is quite nice).

Ok thanks what I thought but wasn't sure, this keyboard still uses a PS2 connector(or PS/2 or whatever the name is, the pre USB thing ^^)

I would suggest if you have a copy of an old game 'Star Control 2' laying around grab the 'keymasher' application from it, using it will show you which keys all don't work when you mash them together *relives fond memories of SC2*

My machine is able to maintain a respectable framerate with 2 wow windows open, so much so that I can reasonably dual box a shaman raid healing, and a mage dps'ing in 20 man raids.

I have wow running at 1280x1024 on one screen and 1024x768 on the other (windowed mode) with about a 10FPS hit to both wow sessions.
I've found that having wow windows spanning screens causes a huge framerate hit, as well as wow hiding behind the windows toolbar.

Autohotkey sounds pretty exciting though, I'm thinking of running macros assigned to keypresses which perform a little of the logic behind basic functions in wow so that I can simultaneously so that I get a little less stressed when it comes time to switch sessions, select targets and perform a function.

This is perfect, but I worry that it's against the EULA.
Thoughts?

I'm not a ToS and EULA specialist, but my guess is, you own both accounts, you're at your keyboard, you actually press keys to accomplish actions by yourself, so it would be legal.
Maybe I'm wrong tho, doubt you can find a "real" answer here, would need to ask a CM on official wow boards who might be able to answer better.

How do you interpret the rules? =P
Seems vague to me, and really frustrating that there's no official policy.
