Is this really harming the integrity of the game when a guild has already killed him legit?

You're kidding right?
As mentioned, this thread is rather pointless right now.

Death-touching to get a bajillion stats and have like 7k agility. From what I understand, this is how every boss in naxx was killed the first time on the test server.
And seriously, how hard would it be to do a quick MD5 hash of all the known mpq files, disable any new non-blizzard ones, and compare those hashes to a master list at login? It'd be like 208 extra bytes sent at login.

While I agree with the ban, that isn't quite what I'd call analogous. =P

That wasn't attained through deathtouching. It was simply a bug where moving items in one of your bags into your main backpack applied their stats to your overall stats until you zoned. This was just things like armor, strength, agility, etc. Green "Equip:" effects did not apply. Was a funny bug nonetheless.

Because you can edit those values as soon as they enter WoW's program memory. Or have a man-in-the-middle pc modify those values as they enter your network, and that's untraceable.
Really, it's quite hard to prevent modifying game files.

Heh, yeah actual memory model changing/adding is one of the most interesting techniques I will have to say I've seen used.
Anyways can we get this thread closed now with that other thread open for the more interesting stuff :)

This was just Blizzard's "statement" to the raiding community that they won't tolerate actual modification to the game files to exploit. I dont think any other punishment would have made such a statement. We wouldn't really be talking about this if they were banned for a week. It wouldn't even be a big deal if they were banned until TBC. So what? They've already "beat the game" so to speak. But by taking everything away from them, it sends a clear and undisputable message that they are not going to tolerate this.
Warning someone for doing an action that they quite clearly know was blatantly wrong would be far too light a punishment.
Just makes you wonder how all 40 could have signed on to this though...

Just skimmed through the entire thread, so I'll mash all my responses into a single post.
Whoever was saying the FH video/vent was unethical:
For the record, they actually told us on IRC us they were world buffing, so we took that opportunity to pay them a visit. We did not sneak onto their Ventrilo and record them... one of their own guildmates thought people were being "sandy", and recorded Vent. He later sold us the recording for 100g. :) WoW since clearing Naxx has become very boring... we wanted to start drama; feuds are awesome and make for good gameplay outside of raids. We delayed our usual raid time by 1.5 hours to do this, and hands down, this was the most fun we had in game for a while.
What Overrated is up to now:
Obviously we're trying to get unbanned. What surprised me, and what most people on these forums do not believe, is the general level of apathy towards it all. No one was really upset, no one pointed fingers. It was just an "oh well" sort of attitude on our Vent last night. Lot of laughter and reminiscing and all that shit. I got several PMs from people saying this was a blessing, that they can now quit cold turkey and move on with their life. I know that people would have preferred this guild to go out in a bang of flames and glory and controversy, rather than wither away into nothingness from attrition or internal drama.
Why we did it:
Boredom? Need for excitement? Idle hands are the Devil's tools. I distinctly remember asking in raid before the first time we did it, if you mind getting suspended/banned, you may want to leave the raid. No one left. Really, with all content down, and nothing left to look forward to till TBC (when the giant reset button is being pushed), we were just looking for ways to speed up the raid times, heh.

Regarding mpq files and the map...
The recent fix to disconnecting in raid zones (which causes a player to automatically hearth if they are disconnected for too long) had a side effect of messing up a player's map. Or at least it messed up my map. My hearth was set at Light Hope's Chapel, but my minimap and world map thought I was still in Naxxramas.
I think to myself, no big deal, I'll just ride back to Naxx and zone in there. Except I'm playing on a pre-Naxx EPL map and can't get to or see the raised platform where the zone in is. Logging out and then logging back in fixed the problem, but I spent about ten minutes running around in EPL looking for the Naxx portal. I am also unable to see my position on the world map while that is going on too.

Running along the ledge on the left side of MC from just after the zone to skip all the trash, then hop down and train the imp cave to Mag cavern, SS and res up. Levitate into places that weren't meant to be, and pull mobs through walls with pets, etc. Train mobs long distances with in combat summoning/hots transferring aggro. Spyglass exploiting over walls. Blessing of wisdom generating aggro on every tick for every person, and attributing it to the paladin. I'm sure there's tons of fun and entertaining things I skipped over.

I actually had a simiular issue occur recently, though that was on an evening my ISP was being really bad. Took zeppelin, went off it, thought "Hmm that's odd, there were 5 people in the zeppelin with me before", than I try mounting and it lags and I relog. When I log back in, I'm underneath the Stonetalon Mountains falling in nothing, obviously I die after a while. "Okay I think, Spirit Rez time", except when I release my spirit ends up falling the same way like I just did. Oddly enough I was moving in a direction slightly... Anyway I figure I'd try relogging, and to my surprise instead of falling underneath the Stonetalon Mountains, I am now suddenly falling underneath the Eastern Plaguelands.
Was pretty crazy, had to wait for a GM to sort it out. Apparently I'd become desynched from the server somehow. As far as the server was concerned I'd jumped off the zeppelin and died, but as far as the data my client got I'd arrived back on Kalimdor, hence why I started falling in the Stonetalon Mountains (Those worldwide coordinates where I was falling being the spot the Tirisfal graveyard is), relogging fixed my synching, but the amount of data the server accepts from the client means I was way beneath the terrain still.

The funny thing is that you can still do this, I accidentally pulled him once almost a year ago by being too close to the edge of the bridge, and then about 3 months ago we tried it out to see if we could avoid the trash. Turns out you just need to clear like 3 packs of mobs ahead of the bridge and then you can do it with no problems (we decided to just not bother after we wiped to the entire hallway of trash pulling on us). Once you clear those 3-4 packs the other ones between you and Golemagg won't be pulled with him.
|
we pulled him from the bridge a couple of times successfully, but then they patched it relativly recently, so no go anymore :/

The thread isn't pointless as long as we get good stories about other guilds' fiascoes. The reasoned posts from the Overrated members have been entertaining, as has Gurg's foray into WoW Historian status.
I personally find the whole thing amusing. They did something they probably expected to cause some issues and they got busted for it. It may have been more harsh than they anticipated, but no one sane would really exclude the possibility of a ban, either. And it doesn't matter at all. The game is basically getting the reset switch in a couple months, so people that want to keep playing can reroll now or wait until TBC if they want to go Blood Elf. Two months after release they'll have all the same gear on as everyone else and nothing will be drastically different.

I may be blind but I must have missed the posts that discussed how OR as a guild took it. I don't see controversy either =)

You'd have to use actual code signing, which would take even longer to process than a simple checksum:
% time md5 terrain.MPQ
MD5 (terrain.MPQ) = 469f64faf41486584db7f4cb90ebaf1a
md5 terrain.MPQ 8.48s user 7.16s system 9% cpu 2:51.07 total
Mostly I/O-bound, and this is on a slow laptop, but the point is - it'd take a long time even for something as simple as MD5.
