Gurg tells the story of Conquest: http://forums.elitistjerks.com/viewt...238148#p238148

I like the stories that come out of MMOs, the accomplishments, the bannings, the videos. I've been around for some, BBz cascading and Leeroy Jenkins(Hi P4L) were both on my old server, Laughing Skull, and are both part of the reason it is my old server. I've heard of others, Korean's killing Phase 2 Ony, Funeral Crashing, the all Gnome Warrior Protest which brought down a server.

I'm a fan of these sorts of stories, and I want to hear more, rumors, memories and accurate re-tellings. Not just from WoW, but any MMO, or even old Bnet stories.

Thados and the "owned with easy" meme originated on Tichondrius. Some people may consider that noteworthy.

You're forgetting Deus Vox cascading on LS, they took it to another level ^^
I remember AQ(not ahnqiraj, was like ayan bakhur or something) wars on AC darktide, where about 80% of the players were using various speedhacks, which made it look like a huge skating event with everyone sliding on the ground at full speed and casting bolts that would pretty much never hit.
Wasn't playing yet back then, but I remember the story of Lord British, Ultima's conceptor who got PKed like a newb during a speech in Ultima Online because he forgot his unvulnerability tag ^^

The Nurfed video of the warrior destroying over world mobs near the end of WoW beta with Slam and a 4.0 axe comes to mind as a game-changer. Hakkar's tainted blood infecting entire capitol cities was a big one. Also the Kazzak Reckoning bomb..
Anyone recall the guy posting under 2 accounts on Brell's server boards in the infamous Page 7 incident?

Hakkar plague was excellent. Gor, was the 2 accounts thing the one where after pages and pages of some entirely overwrought argument, a CM popped up and said "By the way, both of these characters are on the same account"?

Let's see... in Anarchy Online, there was a protest about the filthy state of the water in the rebel capital city, which led to the water being cleaned up ingame (they took out the filth and made it pretty).

Since I come from Medivh/Horde I had the <Ascent> and <Fury> do some fun things. First that comes to mind is when a Voidwalker Geddon bombed me while I was trying to buy my Krol Blade.

The kiting videos: Stitches to Goldshire was the first I'm aware of and a classic, Kazzak to Stormwind, some kind of green dragon to Orgrimmar at Christmastime.

Something like that. IIRC it was a guy logging in and out of two accounts posing as two completely separate people (I think one of whom was clearly supposed to be a woman in real life) who forgot to log out and posted under under the wrong account on a board that had no editing. The thread was promptly linked to every other EQ server and the guy was basically laughed out of the game.

Biny's Geddon bomb video was hilarious, I still laugh when I watch it.

Ohhh, no, I was thinking of a WoW thread. Very similar, except that it was 2 chars on the same account fighting with each other and pretending to hate each other, then a CM came in and noted "Two characters, one account".

I remember reading stories about MMOs, social interactions, etc. One of those included the Lord British thing. But what really stood out was a story about unplanned consequences in an MMO.

A while back in some game (apologize for the vagueness, I can't recall where I read the story despite searching everywhere for it, so some of the details may be incorrect), developers had put in some big world event where mobs would attack a certain city in waves to destroy some crystal, which would lead to story/etc developments in the game. It proceeded without a hitch on most servers, but on one server, top players had organized a massive defense of the city, and posted round-the-clock watches to protect it. It apparently lasted at least a day or two before the developers had to step into the server and kill the defending players so the event could proceed.

I remember reading that story and getting a "that... is so... freaking... COOL!" feeling. I really wish I remembered where I read it though. Struck me as a really cool story about unintended consequences when you put certain amounts of freedom and control into the hands of a large number of people. Can't always expect things to turn out like you wanted. =P

The Christmas video (http://warcraftmovies.com/movieview.php?id=12365) was priceless.

The same guild (Vis Maior) also made the first Patchwerk video (and world 3rd kill, as I recall), but the video (entitled "No Gimmicks, Just Skill" : http://files.filefront.com/nogimmick.../fileinfo.html ) made quite a stir because the rogue Frapsing it never used SnD...mockery on R&D and Realm forums quickly eclipsed what accolades they received for the swift kill and video.

Another one: Rallos Zek's serverwide kill of the Sleeper, and anything else involving waking the Sleeper on any EQ server. Always a disaster, and always some asshat guild that just couldn't leave one of them standing to get another week's worth of extremely rare loot.

Are you thinking of Tessera on the mage forums? After his "Mage Union" failed, he tried to revive it with a thread where about 5 other players were supporting him and bashing Tseric. It ended when Tseric finally said something to the effect of: "You're aware that I can see you're all the same person, right?" and Tess was finally laughed off the mage forum.

edit: While the Mage Union was pretty pathetic, the loss of the Mage Onion was tragic. I still tear up sometimes when I think about it.

That had to be one of the best CM posts that I have ever seen to date. Now correct me if I am wrong but didnt Tess threaten legal action after that post?

I remember that one. A night elf and a UD got outed in some really bad RP by one of the CMs. Other 'legendary threads' (before the overuse of said term) include the mother catching her son up late on some RP server forum, maybe the original Ashbringer specualtion thread regarding Timolain's Phylactery, or "50 DKP minus."

Surely, some recounting of Avatar/Corp Hur's exploits fits in here as well.

I actually remember reading a newspaper article that used Hakkar's plague as a starting point for a discussion of virtual diseases.

See you, auntie.

To get the whole story of 'What Conquest did' you need to go back to Everquest. Now that was an interesting story that rocked the ENTIRE MMO world at the time.

An *old* one, from one of the first MMOs (Habitat, back in the modem days), related in the Vernor Vinge collection True Names, talks about early flaws like an economics exploit where one vendor sold an item cheaper than another would buy it for, and the forerunner of the Lord British incident, wherein a GM with a deathtouch wand was killed and (since any item you were holding was lootable if you died) had his deathtouch wand taken by the player. Credit to the game devs for putting Death in the game and having a story/RP event wherein Death went to take back his wand.

heh, I played on the same server as those guys. I wouldnt say they were part of any major fiascos - they were social griefers down to the very core. They played to ruin everyone's experiance.
(ex: http://www.darkwolves.org/superhero.html )

I am trying to remember WoW faiscos that I've been part of, and I just cant remember anything major. Atleast in comparision to my DaOC memories.

First a little backstory..
Merlin was DaOC's "biggest and baddest" server. These same people chose WoW Archimonde to be the "Merlin" of WoW in order to pit themselves against each other for "glory and fame". (Ofcourse, Archimonde was a huge failure).
Anyway,
1) A little bit of Merlin history... remember Drutt (of Myth clan) who finally snapped and cried on teamspeak (it was called Roger Wilco back then)? Theres a recording of the incident floating somewhere on the net.
He was 45 years old btw.

The thing with the Avatar exploits is that they were nothing by themselves, but only as a pattern of behavior do they become truly noteworthy. From DIing Razorgore back when that was original, to cascading via stealing other guilds Ragnaros kills, to Mind Visioning on Vael, to getting banned from the PTR mid Patchwerk with 27k hps by a certain <GM>Planedefiler, to the infamous world first Gothik crotch shot, and all with somehow never getting banned or suspended, is pretty legendary.
