We usually just spread out around the middle. If we see the valkyr animation before the defile is cast, we move to the middle. It's just a matter of quick reflexes and some practice, we never had too much problems with it though.
You might want to have a mage marked in the middle as reference point, since he can easily blink out if he gets targetted by defile.
