And have the same people crash repeatedly, always simultaneously.
Happen to others? repro known?

Fighting 4H. Doesn't sound relevant though--happened to other people at the same time, some not in the guild, or even in the same zone.
Basically, a whole bunch of people dc'ed simultaneously, all reporting a WoW crash. While trying to log back in, exactly the same set of people again dc'ed simultaneously. Disabling addons didn't do anything.

Ok. Might have something to do with this:

Time for some fun in my raid this week.
But on a more serious note, does the chat actually show up as text or does it just disconnect people?

Posting a link from an obscure exploit/bug website onto one of the most heavily trafficked guild websites is not smart.
Blizzard won't tolerate people doing this, and the culprits will be blatantly obvious to their server logs since its using chat channels. I would not be surprised if they respond with permanent account bans, since its clear harassment of their customers and disruption of server stability.

Since the link contained a purported fix, which seemed to work fine for us, posting it seemed like a better idea.

The fix is:
add the following lines to your "World of Warcraft\WTF\Config.wtf" file and you will be immune to this crash exploit.
SET readContest "-1"
SET readScanning "-1"
SET spamFilter "0"
SET profanityFilter "0"
|
There's no need for a link to a place to download what enables the exploit.

Yeah, sorry, was just being hasty because I was trying to get a raid back together.
Maybe that fix should be posted somewhere prominent, though.

To make it up to us, you could find some way to re-enable that bug that let everyone jump in mid-air, as high as they wanted to.
I loved that bug. I spent a few happy hours miles above Ironforge before it got fixed.
Never had the balls to exploit with it... I was even too scared to get into the Ironforge Airport :)

Well, I guess most of us have at some point experienced people who were crashing whenever you messaged them a certain word/character. I still have fond memories of the days when our MT would disconnect if anyone in whispers or warrior channel would use [%] in any context. This was mod-related and he got rid of it by removing chat event monitor.
By the sound of it, this exploit is much the same, with the exception that the software to make someone vulnerable is downloaded on the side of the "attacker" rather than the victim, meaning that random people won't be safe and you can basically trash their raids as much as you like.
Any word on why it appears only part of your members were vulnerable to it?

From the symptoms - multiple zones, both in/out of guild.. maybe LFG or Guild Recruitment channels?
Not that it matters.. word will get around just as fast about the temporary fix.

Might it have something to do with what channels they were in (LookingForGroup) or possibly their profanity filter settings?
I have no idea what the other two settings are for though... oO

Stack overflow has something to do with your IRQ (Interrupt Request Queue) getting too deep. I thought this was something that only happened in older games, never heard of it recently. My old copy of Tie Fighter used to get stack overflows and id have to jimmy rig something to get it to work again. God i loved that game.

No clue. My girlfriend who sits across the desk got it; I didn't. We run a good intersection of the same addons, so if addons are a factor (which it seems they're not), that might be it. We were in the same guild, raid, and instance. She's in LFG and I'm not (but a quick Vent poll showed that somebody who isn't in LFG got it); other chat channels are the same. It's really weird.
We didn't look in her config.wtf in detail before she put the fix in, since we were in a hurry. However, my config.wtf already had 3 of 4 lines of the "fix" in it. Does anyone what settings those things all correspond to?

Ok, I'm really confused. Anyone who got that link before it was removed, take a look at the code for the addon. It's ridiculously simple. I have no idea how it does what it does.

What the hell. I make games for a living and this is nonsense to me. Stack overflow occurs usually from recursion, which is probably what is happening here. You're IRQ handlers are for handing device interrupts and most applications don't even access IRQ handlers directly, that's all done by device drivers in Windows.
Sounds like someone sends a bad text strength and some mod or the main game code parses it incorrectly and goes into a recursive loop which blows the stack. It's not that uncommon of a bug.
