...the BBC. British accents help me focus, I swear to god.

That aside, usually just game soundracks and the like with the classical solo piece or jazz intercession. I dislike anything with lyrics. At the moment I have some stuff from American McGee's Alice, Broken Saints, and a Morrowind remix looped in the background.

Probably because I wasn't kidding about the Elton John (although I repeat- I don't actually own an Elton John CD!).

I listen to mostly the same stuff for soloing, raiding, or anything else, depending on my mood. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, early Metallica and Hammerfall every so often, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden. Mostly Led Zeppelin and Iron maiden. When I get tired of rock/metal or need to hear vent better I put on Dispatch. It's excellent background music.

I've always listened to music while playing WoW. While I was leveling it was 14 hours of Led Zeppelin on a loop. As a result certain songs have gained the "taste" of feelings from leveling. That sounds odd but I don't know of a better way to describe it.

It should be noted that Apate and I have an unending disagreement over which is better, Rhapsody or Dragonforce. The answer (Rhapsody) is obvious but not everyone is gifted with clarity of hearing like I am.

Mages have a set time that they want you to ask for food, and that time is pull #4 of the night. You may notice them putting a little snack table down before the raid, that's them cooking the food for you to demand on pull 4. --Nork

I dunno, both Rhapsody and Dragonforce are good in their own rights. Rhapsody their nice symphonic, epic feel and Dragonforce for plain kick-ass. It's like comparing apples and oranges. I love both.

Other good metal bands I've been introduced to are Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Symphony X, Stratovarius, and Falconer. Within Temptation was a nice recommendation as well.

I'm pretty interested in the lack of country music fans among the gamer community.
I can't claim to speak for everyone, but personally country makes me want to gouge out my eardrums. It's one of the few genres of music I just can't bring myself to touch.

These days I find myself mostly listening to hard trance/psy trance and similar genres (another plug for www.di.fm here, one of the best websites on the web imo), though I'll throw on one of my old metal playlists (Black/Death/Industrial/Symphonic/Power/Folk and almost everything in between) every now and then.

I also love listening to a bunch of soundtracks from games I used to play, Diablo/Baldurs Gate series sound tracks are both great for gaming, as is the soundtrack to a little known TBS called Lords of Magic from 10 or so years ago, the LoTR movie soundtrack, etc etc.

Oh yea I like the Halo 2 soundtrack as well.

There are a good deal of instrumental tracks I like, but rock music has become no different than ambient/instrumental to me so I can usually always have it playing while doing something else. It does invoke feelings but that manifests no matter what, even if you're missing the lyrics.

Even with different music, I think it's possible to tune out/tune in anything you want really. There are a ton of bands I praise more for lyrics than the music, and an equal amount that I prize their music more than the lyrics so I can't really say any band means I absolutely have to pay attention.

Course, I was always one of those people who always had music in the background no matter what. Showering, driving, studying, cooking, doing housework; hell sometimes I even had the stereo on while the tv was on. (Such murder on the electric bill!)

For me it's the piece of work in it's entirety. Listen actively or passively, it still invokes what I want it to: The feeling of elation or adrenaline prior to a boss kill, the grinding mellow phase of working off strats, and the subsequent depression of wiping to it before we've gotten it down.

That's something interesting I've noticed though. When I play WoW I use music to get me into the mood, instead of normally when I am doing other things I pick music choices based on my mood. It seems to run similarly to others who focus their attention on WoW.

And yea, I gotta go with Trance/Some Techno for pvp, especially as a hunter. Point, shoot click, point, shoot, click...it's music in motion.

None, because I'm the raidleader and have to talk on TS all the time. (:

If I was DD, probably some Trance or Death Metal.

New bosses = A-Team theme song or Mission Impossible theme song dependent on how optimistic I am of the outcome. Always feels good to get a kill to Mission Impossible.

Otherwise usually I'm just listening to Vent and WoW sounds while raiding.

For grinding/pug PvP with a melee class: the Gladiator soundtrack. Nothing like chain killing in PvP or taking on a bunch of mobs during the battle scene tracks.

Brunswick, I like your style. :)

For me, I just have Queen's Greatest Hits Vol 1 on random shuffle most of the time, although for raiding it's TS and game sound only.

There's something satisfying about stomping a rogue in pvp to We Will Rock You. :)

For raiding, I need something that doesn't have English vocals. Instrumentals, lyrics in languages I don't know, and even snippets that couldn't be considered lyrics are fine, but anything approaching sentences I can understand make me completly unable to pay attention to Vent. Dark ambient is amazing for Naxx, IMO.

For grinding, the cheesier the better. Ideally, something that if I paid too much attention to would make me burst into laughter. Symphonic Power Metal, Scooter, and a lot of Vangelis's music are great for this. It's really hard to get bored while listening to someone singing about the "Steelgods of the last apocalypse".

Rhapsody has some actual musical talent, while Dragonforce just plays really, really fast. It's impressive, but it'd be nice if they didn't miss half the notes.

Gabriel & dresden, their flavour of trance fits in well. I keep it low so it doesnt steal my attention from the raid. It also isn't vocal enough to direct your attention from vent.

German "Industrial" (read: Rammstein, Megaherz, etc.) Metallica, Motorhead, MSI, Reveille, Disturbed, Andrew WK, and Green Day is fairly standard for PvP and when I don't want to actually hear vent.

Alice in Chains, Prodigy, Three Days Grace, NiN, Nickleback, Offspring, Chilli Peppers for most raiding.

Classical, Queen, or Minibosses for wipe nights.

Nothing beats Manowar for cheesiness. (sp?).

It's mostly a turned down version of a playlist consisting of:

Juno Reactor
Iron Maiden
Kai Tracid
Sonata Arctica
Dimmu Borgir
AC/DC
Immediate Music (known mainly from Curse v.s BWL, though I recently encountered their music in the Equilibrium movie as well.)
Some misc music like One Winged Angel from FF7, some Requiem for a Dream tracks.

For raiding, what's in there depends on my mood. If it's been a really bad day, I'll probably swap Juno Reactor out for Emperor. (Quite controversial Norwegian Black Metal band.) or likewise.

PvP I don't care, as long as it's fast and furious. I tend to press the 'next' button on the keyboard when the music just doesn't fit.

-edit- And Godspeed You Black Emperor sounds interesting. :)

I always have the in-game sounds on unless they're disrupting my ability to hear ventrilo. There are actually a lot of useful audio cues in the game, death sounds, pain sounds, spell casting sounds, boss ability sounds (not from boss mods, the actual spell casting sound the boss makes in-game).

I listen to over 600 newly released albums each year (some to review, most for pleasure/edification) so my WoW soundtrack tends to be whatever I need to listen to at any given point, be it rock, jazz, classical, country, electronic, what have you. I'm a good multitasker so I can give my full attention to both raiding and my music. Beatdown Brigade doesn't use Vent either so that's not an issue.

If I really need to hunker down I put on The Complete Motown Singles. I have volumes one through six, comprising almost 40 hours of soul goodness.

Yeah, I've seen that before. It's not bad; I take pretty significant issue with some of his breakdowns (associating Basic Channel with Detroit at all, for example) and some of his associations/derivations (acid and techno really don't share much, historically, and ghettotech is a fundamentally Detroit thing, coming out of the same scene and parties as Detroit techno, but totally unassociated by Ishkur - even though five of the six tracks he samples are Detroit producers) but shit, it's music, it's not like there's a hard and fast answer to anything.

That said: when you have major classifications of "Trance, House, Techno", I'm gonna stand by my statement that techno and trance are quite disparate. Also, I will state that Baby's Gang is the finest musical act ever, and I challenge anyone to prove me wrong, especially after you've seen one of their videos.

edit: Link to a video. http://youtube.com/watch?v=gVwqlisbkNs
Ah but I think the whole point of Ishkur's breakdown was to poke fun at fans of electronic music and their endless cataloguing just as much as it is a real attempt to trace the history of the broader genre. I'd say given your reaction (and mine; I'm not above it. GHETTO TECH GOES WHERE?!?) he succeeds pretty well. :)

I'll totally agree that as a subgenre techno totally stands on its own. I'll respectfully disagree that everything that's coming out of Belgium is derivative. That's me being a huge fan of both Belgian New Beat and the country's special brand of early EBM/industrial, though.
I didn't mean to imply it was necessarily derivative; however, I draw a line between the originators of a genre and people who work within it. Belgium, as fine as some of the music coming out of it is (I would *never* call I-F derivative, and Space Invaders is a fucking *anthem* for me), didn't originate the genre, and mainly hasn't been a force driving progress within it. Of course, coming up in Detroit, I'm a bit biased on the subject. Let's say that while there are some perfectly good Belgian musicians, if you want to claim knowledge of the history and span of techno, Belgium's not a particularly important place.

Melador> Incidentally, these last few pages are why people hate lawyers.
Viator> I really don't want to go all Kalman here.
Bury> Just imagine what the world would be like if you used your powers for good.

Clearly law school has done wonders for me.
