If you look at your original client tos.html and the beta tos.html, you'll notice they have exactly the same size (in the euro enGB client). That's why it worked cleanly for us.

Last night I couldn't patch, but this morning the patch downloaded again and updated no problem on my beta client. I'm not sure if they changed anything but I'm running 2.0.5 with the TBC backdrop on my login. Gonna take a closer look at my files to make sure I didn't somehow convert them to retail, though I'm not sure how that would happen.

Make a copy of your data\enUS\tos.html before you run retail wow, as they released patch 2.0.5 again on retail and you will get a new ToS.html which will not let your BC beta client get patched. Fortunately I have a 2nd PC with wow that still had the 2.0.4 tos.html.
I copied over the 2.0.4 tos.html to my bc\data\enUS directory, ran bc, let it get the patch, renamed my backup MPQ file, and it patched ok and I can get into retail no problem. I will of course install the real CD once I get it, but for now seems ok.
This all applies only to US clients of course, European ones have it a lot easier.
The CD key page isn't up yet on live yet for TBC either, I guess they won't flip that on till midnite either.

It's live or it was yesterday:

Also is there any verification that the beta client will work? Not sure if anybody has pulled apart the .mpq's and checked out the differences between the actual install and the beta.

Can anyone upload a tos.html from 2.0.4? My retail client is already patched to 2.0.5 and I can't think of a way to get it.

I installed a new copy of WoW and just pulled it from the 2.0.4 before patching to 2.0.5. Much <3 for the help in this thread. My beta install seems to be working again.

Thank you very much. My client patched without breaking down in tears and is now working again.

So just out of curiosity, anyone in Europe actually use this method and have any problem getting on after TBC went live over there? (I'm guessing if they got on they are in playing now though so perhaps this is a fruitless question *grin*).

Yes, that works for the enUS version. Easy and fast solution.

The one missing step not in the first post or the other summaries:
set your realmlist.wtf file, the one in your base beta TBC directory, to contain:
set realmlist us.logon.worldofwarcraft.com
(or eu, or whatever... just remove the word 'beta' from it)
It is mentioned elsewhere, but there can be more than one realmlist.wtf file. Don't be like me and change the wrong one and think its not working.

fwiw I compared my TBC beta install dir and release CD dirs and there ARE differences in the MPQ files. Whether its because of the patch process or not I can't tell. I did level 50% through 60 with the beta client, no problems, but playing now with real CD version.

Following the steps here, I was able to upgrade and connect to Beta with no patching needed. Lovely.

Any fix for the latest patch hosing beta builds? Still don't have my cds because leveling was far more important than that, but I'd rather find a quick fix (like the 2.0.5 fix) than have to go get some cds.

The issue this time seems to be with the different MPQ size itself. I've had to break down and install my retail version again, because I don't honestly see a quick fix for the MPQ.

I went ahead and installed the retail version a few days before the patch - took 20 minutes, tops, and I guaranteed problem-free (at least from beta client issues) future patches for myself. Well worth doing. Just copy the stuff from the CDs to your hard drive, set it to install, and go have dinner or something.

You need to replace your base-enUS.mpq file with that from the 2.0.5 retail version for the patch to work. The problem has been highlighted in the WoW Tech Support forum and a few guys posted links to the appropriate file there ~15MB.
