Grats folks, I was wondering when you'd get those guys down. I really hope they're as fun an interesting to learn as everyone keeps crowing about, and my guild can manage to get decent shots before they're nerfed.

Congrats guys, I really agree with the sentiments Gurgthock put in the original post. After the only times we spent more than a day or two on a boss in all of TBC being due to just pure retardism and not difficulty (a little bit on brutallus since we had a day at 8 healers to prove we couldn't beat the enrage timer with 8), it was very nice to see an actually difficult boss, and one that is still tuned very well.
I won't get into specifics, since we're not discussing strategies, but it does seem to me like everything that does use LOS does it on purpose, and everything that doesn't also does it on purpose. I don't expect any of it will be changed, or is unintended.

At first I felt weird about the creative use of LOS/pathing mechanics to control certain aspects of the fight ("This can't be intended...") but having completed the learning process I changed my mind. The mere fact that Shadow Images are uncontrollable and have relatively short despawn timers suggests on its own that you shouldn't feel compelled to eat their damage and disruption. The other thing is the repeatability of the fight given different approaches and positioning. We made serious attempts with at least 4 different positionings, and that's part of why it took us a bit longer to kill them than I think we were capable of had we just put our heads down and powered through the fight.
The final positioning we settled on was EXTREMELY repeatable: out of our 18 attempts last night, 10 reached Phase 2 and the last four were all Phase 2. Even on bad attempts, we got Alythess down or had her very low when we called a wipe. I think we're all pretty confident in our ability to walk in there next week and drop them in a handful of attempts, something that I don't think everyone can say with the strategies they used. Ultimately, I thought of Firemaw a lot when learning this fight. At the time, using LOS to protect the majority of your raid from Flame Buffets seemed like a wacky strategy that smacked of exploitation (at least, this is my recollection). Then everyone realized that a kill would be extremely difficult or nearly impossible to pull off/repeat without it. From that point on nobody thought anything of using LOS in raid encounters. If the devs have figured out ways to use terrain in boss fights more creatively, I don't think anyone would say that's a bad thing.

Maybe next week? Our fraps users contend that their frame rates go to crap during this encounter, so none were running it last night.

Frame rates are okay most of the time, but every time Shadow Nova goes off everything just freezes up for a second. This makes for a visually irritating video. In any case, we're not in the habit of doing official video releases so I wouldn't hold your breath.

First off Congratulations on the kill.
Tonight we killed them for the second time. I was extremely worried about repeating the kill even with our strategy(As you can see in our kill video). The group was largely unchanged minus one new rogue, yet within 40 minutes we had our second kill.
So as for repeatability i see it not being a problem once the "Right" strategy is in place.

Put your spell details on lowest for this encounter and that lag you get when shdow nova hits gets sorted, and you can still see everything just fine with it on lowest.

I actually see Felmyst being a far easier fight than Kalecgos and Brutallus. Sure it's easier to wipe on if someone doesn't move on time, but the overall requirements for dps, and healing are lower, just that personal attention requirement is higher.
Anyways congratulations.

The numerical requirements for Kalecgos are pretty negligible, and I don't think raw numbers are a good benchmark for fight difficulty anyway (maybe it seems that way as a Mage). Some fights (like Brutallus) are numbers fights; the numbers are where the difficulty comes from. Felmyst isn't a hard DPS race, but the DPS requirements aren't trivial and there's a lot of healing required between Encapsulate and Gas Nova and Corrosion and the ever-present DOT aura. This is to say nothing of the technical aspect of the fight: positioning for Gas Nova, positioning/movement for Encapsulate, fast reactions by Priests to prevent Gas Nova ticking, moving 25 people in a coordinated fashion to avoid the MC clouds, pathing the phase 2 "lasers" in a good way, rounding up the skeletons...the list goes on. Felmyst is absolutely more technical and in my mind that makes it more difficult, and more difficult to repeat. I'm confident every week that we'll one-shot Kalecgos and Brutallus (barring things like this week's tank disconnect), not so on Felmyst.

We haven't really released official boss videos though some stuff gets fraps'd internally just for posterity and no doubt gets passed around somewhat.

Grats guys!
We've done it with 10 healers now twice, and man...I could be wrong, but I don't see it happening with 8 any time soon at all. Just too many ugly combos that you end up having to heal through. But hey, maybe with a bunch of haste gear and everyone avoiding all the damage they possibly can. We'll see I guess.
Definitely a very satisfying fight when it all comes together, though.

It needs more trash outside after the kill though. It'd be a real good reward for killing them considering the lack of patterns and motes everywhere. :/
