[Rogue] Swords vs. Fists?

There is alot of threads on wow-forums about Swords vs. Fists, and since most of the replies are like this: "Fists rock!!1", "Get swords, they own everything!", i thought we could go to the bottom of this, with the new sword speciallization and all.

Lets compare Arena Swords with Arena Fists, using the same raid DPS build only swapping the weapon speciallization.

Anyone that can bring out the big numbers?

Check this thread: Rogue DPS Spreadsheet
Check this post: http://elitistjerks.com/showthread.p...626#post367626
Download this spreadsheet: http://www.savefile.com/files/757941

Download the spreadsheet.
Notice the tabs at the bottom.
Select "intro" and read the intro.
Select "talents" and configure your talents.
Select "gear_buffs" and configure your gear.

You can now play around with different setups. Select your swords of choice. Look at the boxes "unbuffed dps" and "buffed dps". Write down the "big numbers". Select your fistweapons of choice. Look at the big numbers again. Compare the big numbers. Done.

Gryzemuis, the spreadsheet doesnt take care of the "no glancing sword-spec" aspect yet if i recall correctly.
So it doesnt help Lorigo with his question.

Better to post in the rogue spreadsheet if it takes into account the new changes made to sword spec. If it does, use it. If not, wait until it does. Don't really think this justifies its own thread, plus its a very similar topic to the example shit heap stuff =).

There is light at the end of the tunnel.
The only problem is, it's often an incoming train.

I haven't seen "hard facts" on the new Sword Specialization, and the patch notes' wording leaves a few questions:

This ability now grants extra yellow attacks instead of extra white attacks. This change will make Sword Specialization no longer reset the weapon swing timer when it triggers off special attacks, and results in a net increase in damage dealt.

1) Are the extra attacks actually "yellow attacks", so they cannot glance (and might not even be subject to the dual wield hit penalty?)

2) Is the swing time still reset when it triggers off offhand attacks?

3) Can those "extra yellow attacks" trigger another extra attack?

My (way to few) samples would imply 1) extra attacks are treated like yellow attacks (no glancing, no hit penalty, maybe even non dodge-/parry-/blockable), 2) offhand and special attacks work alike, the timer isn't reset for neither, 3) rather not.

As long as 2) holds (extra attacks triggered off offhand attacks do not reset the swing timer), Sword Specialization is superior to Fist Specialization for any SS-oriented weapon/talent setup, as you'll typcially end up with a 25%/50%/25% pattern for MH/OH/special triggered extra attacks: for MH is adding more damage than a crit (poison, and crit chance for the extra swing), for OH it's adding a lot more damage (poison, crit chance, and MH:OH speed), and only for special attacks it's yielding less (about 70-80% for SS).

1) I don't know if the numbers are actually yellow, but the attacks cannot glance. No off hand penatly. MH Weapon damage + AP / 14 * Weapon Speed
2) No, the swing timer isn't influenced by sword spec procs
3) I'd go with no, but as for as I know nobody has done any extensive testing yet

If your choice of weapons is sensible (a slow main and a quick off hand), sword spec will out-DPS fist spec.

This seems to imply that a) the extra attack damage is, in fact, still based on MH damage (essentially, while it was modelled like a MH autoattack before, it's now working like a Hemorrhage hit w/o debuff); that b) neither MH nor OH poisons or enchants (Fiery/Lifestealing/etc) are procced by those extra swings, but conversely that c) Combat Potency can be procced by offhand-triggered extra swings.

a) isn't much of a surprise, and my own results confirm it; it seems unlikely that b) and c) both hold - and I'd deem the thread's result inconclusive on that matter.
