The guild currently known as Elitist Jerks, with more or less the same leadership, etc., was called "Goon Squad" in the closed beta in mid-2004. The closed beta was obviously smaller, and when retail arrived, since Goon Squad was the "official" SomethingAwful Forums guild, an influx of 700+ new players was expected. The closed beta folks enjoyed playing together, and realized that they'd be swallowed up in the surge of new players and lose the sense of community they'd enjoyed, and so they started a separate guild when retail hit. This guild was called "Hooligan Syndicate" (a synonym for Goon Squad... get it??).
Now, obviously, the people who had been in the closed beta and had done all the leveling content already raced through it again, and a large number of the first level 60s on the server were from HS. As such, they were the ones who took the lead in organizing the first actual raids in Jan/Feb 2005. Around this time a number of the more "hardcore" people left GS to join HS, since anyone in GS who hit 60 within a month or so was inevitably spending most of their time running instances with other level 60s in HS. This caused some hard feelings for some. Anyway, as we started to get into raiding, we (HS) proposed a basic DKP system to allocate the loot, and the leadership of Goon Squad was vehemently opposed to using DKP. Some of them were assholes about it. (Some of us were assholes about it too.) The phrase "elitist jerks" got thrown around a bit. Our leadership (I wasn't an officer at the time, fwiw) decided to rename the guild Elitist Jerks as a parody of the whole thing, and to go about our business on our own. So, yes, EJ "split" from Goon Squad in a sense, but is in no way a splinter guild and in fact existed entirely before the guild now known as GS came into being.
Also I'm /gkicking Gonktarget when I get home tonight for consorting with the enemy.
(Also, yes, I'll Heap this thread in a bit.)
