I am currently DW frost tanking 11/55/5 and am having issues generating TOO MUCH threat... yes. I was pulling 20k threat per second doing my standard rotation of keeping diseases up, frost striking during killing spree procs, keeping death runes up and obliterating every chance I get.

What I'm thinking is that my frost strike crits coupled with rune strike macro'd to everything is a little overkill for threat. The reason I say that this is too much threat in particular is because I have to stop attacking entirely or I'll pull off the tank from like one accidental icy touch crit. For this reason I'm thinking about taking all but 1 point out of killing machine and putting the points to max out black ice and get one point into endless winter for extra dps without generating crit threat.

Thoughts?

So they will revert one of the changes that made complete sense back then (10% for the first point versus 5% for the other four was a anomaly) to increase our passive single target DPS, the only thing we are acceptable at the moment, while not fixing any of our real problems (survability, totems, dps in movement fights). I guess, thanks for nothing.

Spec Question - 0/17/54

Im polling the great minds here on elitist jerks to answer a few spec questions I cant seem to figure out.

What I currently have:
Current Rotation: PS – IT – BS – SS – BS – DC – HoW - SS – BS – SS – BS – DC – DC– (DC)
Current Spec: 0/17/54 <--click link *note I do my spec a bit different then what is recommended on this forum
My top DPS'ers by the meters: 1) Melee 2)Scourge Strike 3)Frost Fever 4)Death Coil 5) Ghoul Melee
What I use it for? I only use this spec for PVE DPS Raiding ICC25/10 content. no pvp

The questions I cant figure out:

1) Dirge - I dont get why people prioritize dirge over other talents, like Morbidity. The extra runic power generated to me seems to be wasted in my rotation. Im never in need of additional runic power for a DC in my rotation. What am I missing?

2) Morbidity - is constantly addressed for AoE due to the cool down on DND, which is fine but not a big overall dps increase for me. I dont understand why no one addresses the 15% damage increase for DC? DC is my #4 dps on my meters consistently. Does Morbidity not stack with the Dark Death glyph?

3) Unholy Blight - I can see the absolute necessity of this talent in pvp. In pve, even with all DC damage I do, I get minimal return. I get very little actually damage from Unholy Blight, this ability is never above 14th place on my dps meter. If I am crunched for a point this is the first place I take it. What am I missing?

I am asking these questions to try and get a better understanding; I am by no means saying Im right. Any guidance into my confusion on these issues would be greatly appreciated.

Technically one melee could safely DPS he while she's in the air, but more than one is too risky with the blood bolt splash damage.
For our guild it has been to avoid her running across the room to bite a ranged, and then having to run back, interrupting all the melee pounding on her. This may or may not be valid, but it's a preference.

Thank you for doing it this long though Mav.

As was the case with Vulajin, you brought new ways and options into gearing our toons and for that thanks. GL with the new job.

The answers, to my knowledge:
1) In a reaping-less rotation with Dirge, you get 125 RP per rotation from rune usage, and without Dirge it's dropped to 105 RP, which means you lose out half a DC by not taking Dirge. If you don't have trouble with losing said RP, then fine, but generally unless a druid healer is keeping HoTs on you and get fairly regular proc on their talent, you should run into lacking RP to use DC.

2) The short answer is that the extra damage given by Mobidity on DC isn't as high as damage you'd gain from putting the points in other talents. For example, taking the numbers above, the 2 points in Dirge effectively give you 3 DCs instead of 2.5 DCs, which is a 20% increase(3/2.5) in DC damage, while 2 points in Mobidity is 10% increases.

3) 1 point for 10% DC damage. You asked why Mobidity's DC damage bonus isn't valued more yet you're devaluing this talent? Considering that for DC alone the point in this talent is worth more than 1 point in Morbidity, why not? Also, it's about 1% DPS increase for 1 point of talent, which is quite good(with the exception of some really spec-making talent like Scourge Strike, most other talents are 1% DPS increase/point or less).

A small quip, wowhead thinks your Sundial is socketted (it's a bug that seems to arise from switching items) so your SP totals should be 23 lower. You can fix this by doing 'Clear Enhancements' on the item.

Depending on how you value crit (and int/stam for that matter), you can gain 134 crit and 20 int at the cost of 8 SP and 1 haste by wearing Bracers of Eternal Dreaming, Plague Scientist Boots and hitting socket bonuses with haste gems.

Profile

But this really only applies if you have some very nice gear to choose from, as anything less than full 277 will have you hitting those socket bonuses anyway.

Why is there no thread about fire ? Now with 3.3.3. fire buffs and incanter's absorption nerf, raiding as 18/53/0 would be a HOT topic in my consideration.

From World of Warcraft - English (NA) Forums -> Death Knights will tank as Blood in Cataclysm

We're doing our Cataclysm preview on the death knight changes later this week, but we knew one change risked overshadowing all the others, so we figured we'd go ahead and drop the proverbial Blood bomb today.

In Cataclysm, death knights will have a dedicated tanking tree, much like the other three tank classes. That tree will be Blood.

We’ll go into more detail in the upcoming preview, but we wanted to take the opportunity to explain the reasoning for such a big change.

Why the about face? We actually thought the “tri tank” experiment worked out okay. We suspected there would always be a “best” tanking tree, because that’s the way these things shake out, but we hoped it would be close enough that many players could tank with their favorite tree. When we tried out this design for Wrath of the Lich King, we were using it as a test case to see if we wanted to do similar things with the warrior and paladin talent trees.

A lot has happened since that time. We introduced the dual-spec feature, allowing players to have a tanking spec and dps spec that they could switch between. We introduced Dungeon Finder, which makes it easier to find players who want to tank, and even let players level up using a dedicated tank spec. In Cataclysm, we are introducing the concept of passive talent tree bonuses and we think that feature is a lot stronger when the talent tree has a particular focus (such as damage, tanking or healing). For example, it’s safer to give more passive damage to a tanking tree than we can a dps tree. Above all, we were just spending a lot of effort trying to balance three trees (though it was really six trees, since each tree was trying to do two things).

It started to feel unfair to the other tank classes that we had to spend so much effort tweaking three types of DK tanks, and it even started to feel unfair to the DK that we couldn’t focus their tanking experience. One bit of feedback that really struck home was the DK players who said, essentially, “I look at the Protection tree and I’m jealous of all of the cool tools they have to help their tanking. As a DK, I have to pick and choose tanking talents from within a sea of dps talents.” Rather than have a strong focus, the trees felt a little watered down because they were trying to do so much. With Frost as a dual-wield, spell and runic power focused tree, Unholy as a disease and minion focused tree, and Blood as a self-healing, defensive cooldown, tanking tree, we think the focus of each tree is a lot clearer and cooler.

In Cataclysm, Blood will be the death knight version of a Protection tree. It will have passive talent tree bonuses that reflect tanking. It will have tools, such as a Demo Shout equivalent, necessary for tanking. Several of the more fun tanking talents from Frost and Unholy will be moved into Blood. We will be able to revise (or even remove) clunky mechanics like Rune Strike and focus on letting DKs generate threat with their normal Blood tanking rotation.

This is major change, and we understand it will be met with some disappointment from players who really liked the flexibility, those who appreciated the unorthodox talent tree design, or those few of you who really liked Blood dps. Nevertheless, we are convinced that this is the right change for the game.

More exciting death knight news coming up soon in the preview.

Hello!!!

I experimented in the last day a lot with the 2 buildings 0/17/54 and 14/0/57.
But i i think before i expirment more and more when anyone already knows the answer i should just ask

So the thing is i like 14/0/57 much more because i like the play style to play much more with FU Strikes.
And the Aggro reduction is also not that bad in some situation and with mroe crit you also see much more
often a big SS Crit :-) which is good for the feeling hehe

Now what i want to know is, how much dps difference between the 2 buildings could be? just some dps or
1k dps? is there any situation maybe if you run without Windfury totem that 0/17/54 could make MUCH more dmg
than 14/0/57?

I meen if you compare for example a raid without windfury totem once you play 0/17/54 and once again you play 14/0/57
both buildings with the same buffs just for example without wf.
Or maybe any other important buff however.

Or is it always nearly the same little difference in dps?

Greetings

Makes me rather sad, the versatility in specs was probably the main reason I rerolled (that and 2-hand tanking is fun in concept), though I quite understand their reasoning. I sort of wish I had stuck with my Pally now, though I'll probably still take my DK into Cataclysm, instead of going back to my pally. Will think hard about it once all the changes are released.

Hopefully they make some changes to Frost and Unholy. I hope I don't have to use a pet if I want to 2-hand DPS.
