I look forward to more results of your research because I find this aspect interesting - using a smiting spec as damage rather than purely a way to land heals. An alternative to Shadow, as it were.

I leveled my priest through all expansions as mostly Discipline, including the recent Cataclysm content where I was pure Disc. I was able to solo quite handily and often found myself surprised at the decent DPS I was able to do with very little downtime. I had fully expected I would need to respec to Shadow for leveling but found this wasn't the case.

It's hard to imagine that Discipline priests are ever going to replace Shadow Priests for DPS in raids, but I've no doubt that a motivated person could figure out a way to do it.

Regarding statweights, I originally picked up some vicious conquest pieces to supplement my rares while gearing up. However plugging the weights into guildox it looks as if some of the vicious pieces are competitive if not better than many of the epic healing pieces that drop within the raids.

Statweights Im using for raid healing:

Int: 5
Spr: 5
Mastery: 1
Haste: 1
Crit: .4

As a usually raid healer in 25mans are these weights correct? Like I said I'm concerned about how I should gear and if I should wear the arena pieces simply based on these weights.

hi guys...
first big thx for the guides but i got a question.
u write that u will need for DW with NoCS only 5% hit, but when i look @ my char ingame and uncloth him there stand 0% hit and 5%>5,5%>6%>8% miss chance.
when wear one item like my head with 80 hit there stands 80 hitrating and 0,082% hit.
when i sum alle hit rating on each item i have 606 that 8,05% hit but the 3% from NoCS arent be there.
when i reforge my hit to 5% hit. DrDamage and the Blizz UI tells me that 3% hit are missing.
so what is know the real soft hitcap u have to reach? 5% or 8%

Has it been determined yet where the DR is on Parry/Dodge? I have been reforging hit/expertise to Dodge if not present or Mastery if Dodge is already on the item. My Parry is already pushing 18% due to Runeforging on my 2H. Mainly I am trying to figure out if I should go more avoidance though and at what point does Parry/Dodge not help and MAstery should be the direction.

Also, I have been following the discussion on hit> or <avoidance and was wondering for those that are reforging away hit, when levels of hit/expertise are you keeping and how has that impacted your DS hits in raid? I was spec'd for interrupts and noticed even with 3 in Virulence I was still missing interrupts on the Halfus fight. Is Hit/Expertise now seen as a wasted stat due to Vengeance? I have to admit that I rarely have threat issues unless I get a giant pull(say 6+ mobs) and dps cant seem to all target together. But otherwise threat is really a non issue, and I would prefer to put that hit/expertise to better use, the question is just where?

For SVs, even with the reduction in the modeling to Owl Focus, a Cunning pet is still the best by a large margin since SVs do not generate enough pet focus to support 2/2 WH on a Ferocity pet like they can on a Cunning pet. For Ferocity pets, the SV best pet talent setting is 1 WH and 1 SA with their pet focus generation. Using 2 SA is definitely a huge decrease over 1 WH.

When comparing the DPS of pet types, make sure to disable the pet buffs. It is true that solo that a cat generally is the best pet due to the agi buff and how important agi is to hunters. However, in a raid with any of the numerous sources of the agi buff, the cat is no different than any other Ferocity pet and worse than a Cunning per for SV.
I was not applying full buffs when I got my results. With the buffs applied, the cunning pet does do better for SV by about 125dps over a ferocity one with 2 points in SA and none in WH. Putting a point in each gives me a very slight (about 16) loss in dps. You also do not have to disable the pet buffs if you have raid buffs applied since they cancel out just like they do in game.

My prediction now is that if the current changes on the PTR go live, the strongest Hunter spec will be BM. The differences between the 3 will be minimal though with SV coming in last. The numbers I am now getting with my gear and full buffs are:

BM---19859
MM---19655
SV---18720 (with cunning pet)

There is a pure haste enchant [enchant boots - haste]...which I prefer over lava walker.

With the increase in damage from Shred and Mangle coming soon. I am very curious to know how useful this trinket is going to be for us.

Runspeed is really non-optional for raiding, and since the runspeed meta is such a DPS loss, it's not a valid choice.

Is this stat weight still fairly accurate for bears for sorting gear on wowhead?

Stamina: 47.13

Agility: 22.41
Dodge: 19.55
Bonus Armor: 9.92
Mastery: 7.41
Crit: 6.35

Health 3.19
AP: 2.4
Hit: 2.13
Haste: 0.66

Thank you in advance.

I don't believe the 4% from SS counts for DR so you are probably around 14% parry in terms of DR. I don't have answer on the DR but I'd assume we aren't there yet in the first tier of gear.

I keep as little hit and expertise as possible. I have 2 pts in virulence and that's only for interrupts on Nefarian (mobs are lvl85). In my 10-man I don't have to worry about interrupts on halfus. As you said threat is a non-issue, parry haste has been removed so only reason you need hit is for interrupts. I would assume there are enough people in your raid to interrupt halfus without you doing it.

4setbonus tank

The 4setbonus for tank is really nice and would help out alot in fights, but im wondering which piece of the set not to get. 3 of m have haste on them so I already purchased head and legs. Now what combination would be best of the remaining 2 pieces?
