This is a food for thought type post but, by the time you get to the end of my wall of text...eyebrows will raise.
shortly before the Patch I began doing some experimenting with the DS glyph. I had some curious thoughts going through my head that were VERY similar to Redcape's. I dropped Con for it (yes i know this wasn't optimum dps It really didn't matter) and started watching for changes in raid survivability. I did notice that people died less. but this wasn't what one would call an accurate experiment. i freely admit this.
Then i kinda forgot that i was running the glyph. then, 2 weeks before 3.2, I got into a discussion with my Raid Leader about ret paladin mana consumption. this led to him discovering that i wasn't using Glyph of blood. I was then ordered to change my DS glyph to blood. Now, i wasn't HAVING mana issues and my DPS was on par with the rest of the raid but they decided that this was a big issue so i complied. really i didn't care and I wasn't interested in getting into a fight over it and they were. What happened next, HOWEVER, was most unexpected.
2 days later we were chewing on Thorim hard mode. now we've been 'one-shot' farming Thorim for over a month, but now we were trying hard mode so we had all our core players and were trying really hard....and we were wiping on p1. constantly. The Raid Leader and the other officers were unimpressed, of course, but then on the last wipe of the night one of the priests healing the coliseum group says over vent
"Did they change this fight? Its a LOT more difficult healing then usual"
This was the group that had been killing the attempts. and the only change that i'm aware of was my glyph.
now..im not sayin DS is the way to go. I'm not sayin we didn't just have a night of slackers. But, it happened and its both interesting and relevant.
My personal opinion is that Divine Storm heals the ONE guy in a fight that is going to die RIGHT NOW. This healing should not be compared to those of a typical healer. I also think that DS, glyphed, librim'd, is one of the most important abilitys that a ret paladin has. because no mater WHO you are or HOW good you say you are, Dead DPS = ZEROdps every time. Its kinda like a Pally seatbelt.
