I assumed that, due to the fact that you were smashing these vital organ/bone-carriers with blunt instruments or incinerating them with magical fire that you more often than not damaged the material you were trying to retrieve.

You can't exactly turn in a human skull if you've smashed it to pieces with your mace, or frozen it so solidly that it shatters at a touch.

any major attempt to raid a town results in assloads of guard spawning in the street, inside the mailbox, inside each other or above/inside the pond if you were silly enough to seek refuge there. Their endless respawning really helps give the impression that anything you do won't be worth a shit
