Why is it that an entire guilds progress comes to a screaching halt based on the actions of a few individuals that can't keep their real life troubles out of an online game?

My guild, 10 bosses down in Naxx, most progressed on the server, has halted the raid's progress for a week, possibly forever. Why? Storytime:

Angst has been building for the last few weeks....beta news, stuck on Gothik, members bored, less farming, general discontent. Then the cup boils over today. Some new member fessed up on the class forums that he suffers from chronic depression. Then another nosy member who happens to be a nurse posts that this member shouldn't be playing if he is too "sensitive." A third member makes a snide remark at the nurse. Nurse goes emo, crys to the guild leader. Guild leader blows up and kicks poor depressed kid (who probably /wrists in RL), then says in Vent, "You guys are making this game into a headache; I'll see you later." GL promptly logs off. Concurrently, one of our druids (who just broke up in an online relationship with another guild member - OH THE STABILITY) posts MORE emo crap about anorexia, says she won't be raiding.

No raid tonight. Total and complete emoness has penatrated my guild.

This is the third time the emo virus has infected a guild I have been in. Every other time, the guilds have burned/disbanded. Can my guild be saved? How can I keep the Emo Emus from /w GL all the time?

This is probably destined for the shit heap. Oh well, at least I FEEL better now.
