MMO and forum addiction is notorious for leading some of us to play or browse when we should probably be doing something else. It hit me when I started browsing the threads today on this cash register I am currently posting on: man, I suck. A cash register in a gift shop, and a guy reading forum threads about fantasy land theory on it? Get back to work, paid by the hour lackey.

As lame as that is, surely there are many out there who have done worse/better. What are some of the more unusual places you or someone you know has been caught playing WoW or reading game related websites? Gone to great lengths to avoid the boss' or girlfriend's eye? We must know!

Saved my butt.

I've seen plenty people browse the official wow forums in the comp rooms at Uni. Not really getting caught but still funny to see that almost every time I've been in the room, I see someone browsing those forums.
As for playing when you're supposed to do something else ... well, I've played and browsed these forums a bit while on the can a few times if that counts :D

I'm either fortunate or unfortunate that my cube at work is one of the few that doesn't give people walking by a look at my monitor.

Browsing forums at work ftw, Windows key D at the ever ready in case someone important walks over.

On an unrelated but sort of ironic note. Just yesterday I downloaded this sweet TBC raiding grid from my frienda Alleria guild forums, and I posted it in our guild forums here, only to have Gurg point out that in the lower right corner it commented that it was developed in a post right here on the EJ forums. Here's your sign... Anyhow, I have an office now which helps.

I'm at work right now.

Best Practices for posting from work: Use Lynx (Text only browser)

I use this to browse the internet while I'm at work. It looks just like a cmd line prompt. And you can change the coloring of the text using the included .css files if you want too.

The controls are pretty simple and you can have your own bookmarks saved on a shortcut page.

Here is the link: http://www.pervalidus.net/cygwin/lynx/

http://fredlwm.googlepages.com/lynx.zip is the direct link to the zip file.

When you extract the zip, if you can, extract it to straight to C:\ so the program startup would be C:\lynx\lynx.bat otherwise you are going to have some trouble with it, and it might not save your cookies properly.

Good luck forum addicts.

as a note, it is somewhat hard to actually make posts that include links with this thing so I had to make this post using Firefox, shame on me.

edit: now with screenshot

I have mine set to blue background with white text, default is black background with white text.

In my "office" there are 4 desks, and I arranged all 4 of them to give my one desk protection from prying eyes. 3 hours of your tax paying dollars at work. :)

Kasonic 01/08/07 3:56 PM

I'm at work right now. I do about 2-3 hours of work and spend the rest of the time browsing FoH/EJ/etc. all day.

I've gotten caught playing WoW at work. Twice. At like noon. And my desk faces a busy hallway. Somehow I'm still here. Although these computers suck total ass and I lost my admin rights a while back when my hard drive died, so I'm out of luck now.

Abaxial 01/08/07 4:24 PM

At work. I have one of those stupid low wall cubicals and have been spoken to about reading forums while at work so I've "tried" to cut back. Kind of difficult when you can get your stuff done in a few hours most the time.

tenshi 01/08/07 4:34 PM

I don't know if this counts since I don't have to hide it, but I've once read various wow fora I've been following from the following locations over a course of 3 days:

Seattle-TAC airport NW airlines lounge
Tokyo-Narita airport NW airlines lounge
Seoul hotel room
Seoul/Inchon airport KAL airlines business class lounge
Tokyo hotel room

So far I think I've read EJ and other WoW fora from 4 continents and at least a dozen cities.

And yes, I've thought that perhaps I should have better things to do with my time, but...

Elendril 01/08/07 4:35 PM

I read and post on wow forums at work all the time, and in a way it's part of my job. :-P

I actually got an extra computer set up in the R&D room here just to run WoW, and I occasionally play during lunch or defend stormpike during meetings. :)

moowalk 01/08/07 4:38 PM

If it's not trolling forums it's instant messaging. I figure I'll be wasting time one way or the other.

Haven't quite got 'round to actually playing WoW while at work though, wow.
