Shaman DPS PTR testing

I did some fiddling around with the the PTR since they hand out full tier 5 gear. I took some of the extra gear from other classes as well, since Blizz only saw fit to give shamans healing stuff in the non-set slots.

Here is what I've found.

Against Dr. Boom in the elemental gear with no enchants, but has vendor gems, at

650 +dmg unbuffed
850 +dmg with Totem/flask/food
22% crit from gear alone
25ish mp5

I yielded 700dps sustained for about 3 minutes, no mana pots. Based on this, I'd say elemental shamans are fine, but I would like mages/priests/locks to compare to in all that gear.

For melee, against the Servant of Razelikh in blasted lands
22%crit,
1250 AP
Fang of Vashj on the MH and Fel Edged Battleaxe in the OH,
totems and Flask of relentless assault (120 AP),

I yielded 500-600dps, give or take. I'd say this is fine, but I'd like rogues/Fury warrior input to compare in all that gear.

For those shamans wondering about the faster weapon in the MH, it did about the same damage per swing as the the slower, so the dagger seemed a better choice.

Apart from a rogue being able to do more than 600dps on a boss mob, even unbuffed entirely, remember that you're dpsing on a mid level 50 mob... which would give you a big dps boost due to lack of glancing, increased hit and crit, and less chance to be dodged/parried.

TBH my meter wasnt running during that test, but it was for the caster bit. I was taking a stab at it. My average white hit was 300 (400 main, 200 off), 700 crit. Average WF hit was 400, crit at 800. I would connect on a 57 mob somewhere around 2x per second.

I realize it was a 57 mob, but I was extrapolating. I was probably doing more like 700. I will have to get raw numbers to beef up the ole credibility. Those 73 scorpions are gone from Blades edge, but I think I can probably find something to get some good numbers.

Ok, metered testing yielded about 570 dps unbuffed, no totems on level 70-71 mobs. I would imagine raid buffs, pots, enchants and totems would add significantly more, at least 50.

On live I'm losing most of my DPS to glancing blows against 71+ mobs. Does it seem like the reduction in glancing has made a big difference?

it's noticeably better yes, but no miracle.

On live glancing accounts for 40-50% of all your swing roll results, so if you're doing 500dps (an arbitrary number) from just autoattack, lets say, then you're losing ~100dps from glancing attacks. Given the reports I'm hearing is that glancing frequency is being cut to 50% of what it is currently, given the stated circumstances you'll see a 50dps increase, or 10% more damage from autoattack assuming 50% glancing (more often than not you'll see mid 40%s, but I used an even % cause it makes for easy calculations). Most rogues have autoattack as 50-65% of their damage output, so guessing 60% for a given rogue, you'll see an increase of ~6% damage in general. The more of your damage that's white, the more of an increase this change will bring.

I keep hearing reports that WF procs more often on PTR than on Live; anyone done a proper test?

slant 04/28/07 2:54 PM

Not a really proper test, no. But there's a been a fair bit of testing with small sample sizes with no real rigor which implies that dualwielding 2.0+ speed weapons with WF5/WF5 will proc roughly 18% of the time, even though there's a shared cooldown. Nobody knows exactly how blizzard made that happen; some people say they implemented a complex gradation function over time to approach 20% with the cooldown and some say that they just increased the proc rate to 36% with the cooldown. But neither theory has been proven. Either way, all of the tests agree that enhancement damage in 2.1 is roughly 10-18% lower than 2.0, depending on spec, gear, and whether you spam earthshock every time it's up.

The glancing change should help enh shaman DPS 4-6%, assuming you're attacking a 73 with 25% glancing and 35% damage reduction. But that helps all melee classes equally.

Disquette 04/28/07 5:59 PM

dual wielding fast weapons will definitely get you an overall proc rate of less than 14%. It's not graduated at all. I've done blasted lands testing, a couple times, each trial with more than 1.2k hits with fast weapons. I've also done mixed fast/slow, and slow/slow, WF 2 hands, and WF/{ft/rb/nothing}.
