Combat Log Logging and Parsing
Simple question, which mod(s) do you use for recording your combat log, and which tool do you prefer to parse those logs with?

I recently started using AutoCL (from WWS) and quite like it. It is lightweight but nicely covers my needs. For tools, I upload to WoW Web Stats and love the resulting reports.

If you are looking something specific from your logs, you might want to use grep. It's a command-line tool and is also available to win32 platforms. Google and Wikipedia are your friends, as always.

You can use the AutoCL, which can be found on the WWS site:
http://www.lossendil.fr/serendipity/
Or you can use LoggerHead if you prefer ACE stuff. It also let's you configure in which zone you want to save you combatlog:
http://www.wowace.com/wiki/LoggerHead
Using AutoCL and /combatlog never caused any problems, even combat logs at around 50 MB never caused a drop in WoW's performance. The size was a problem for Windows' Editor though, so I started using Textpad: www.textpad.com

EditPlus is another good text editor to manually go through combat logs.

Is there any efficient way to filter out the healing Prayer of Mending did with WWS? I'm curious as to how much that adds up, but couldn't come up with anything other then searching + adding up the whole combat log, but that's not exactly something I wanna do after each raid.

WWS breaks down all health and mana gains so yes, you'll see exactly how much Prayer of Mending did.

Btw, had a talk with a buddy ingame. He said combatlog range could no longer be changed, while I was pretty sure this was still possible. Anyone who has the lowdown on what range is possible with logging? I've never cared much about parses, but thinking it could be fun to try out.

LoggerHead has several options to change the recorded range for different events, and Recap can set all of them to "max range".
I am not sure how much of a difference this makes, but usually the Recap data is surprisingly consistent with SWStats (even without Recap-Synchronisation).

2.1 is when you won't be able to change the ranges.

Really, what will the default/max combat log range be in 2.1?

Its really annoying and I didn't even realize at first on the PTR but your combat log files individually are pretty worthless. So, you will need to get multiple people to log the combat and use them with WWS (it will auto merge them).
This is all the aftereffect of a really bad hack to fix people being able to see combat log messages in arena during prep time (instead of actually fixing the real server code so you can't see the messages during that time).
This will also have the result of breaking a lot of boss mods that weren't syncing.
|
EDIT: may as well be current since I re-happened across this post. This change did not go through.

This thread probably belongs on the UI Interface forum. But in the way of a response:
SW_Unilog has the potential to be the best for tracking this as long as many people are using sw_stats for damage meters already. The information sorting could use a few tweaks but there is a lot in there.

Based on a bunch of the previous responses I downloaded Loggerhead. It has no info on wowace, and no readme, and doesn't seem to do anything at all in game...
Could any kind soul let me know what commands to use to be able to set it up? I tried the obvious (/lh, /loggerhead. etc) and got no result.

If you have FuBar, you can configure it using the built-in FuBar plugin. I never tried any other way to configure it.

Oddly enough, I've tried the last 3 versions of it and none of them are accessible through FuBar. I gues I'll have to find another mod for my logging needs.

You need the FuBarPlugin-2.0 lib, which is part of a standard FuBar Installation, or available via WowAceUpdater or files.wowace.com

Current Opinion?
I was just wondering what the current opinion is on the best way to parse combat logs; everything I've found seems to be old, and I want to make sure I'm not going off of out-dated information.

Wow Web Stats (WWS, Wow Web Stats) is still regarded quite highly. However, it does have a number of shortfalls - the two biggies, off the top of my head, are that a) numerous Ulduar fights are not being correctly parsed, and b) pets are not counted towards their owner's damage.
World of Logs (WoL, World of Logs - Real Time Raid Analysis) is a relative newcomer, and we are very much liking its results. Instant log parsing/uploading (live sessions) is its claim to fame, but it does pretty much everything the others do.
WoW Meter Online (WMO, WoW Meter Online - Combatlog Replay in Engrish) is the third big player on the scene, and has been around for a while.
----
Stasis Combat Log (StasisCL, stasiscl - Google Code), though I don't know how maintained this is.
Event Horizon Fight Statistics (EHFS, Event Horizon Fight Statistics (EHFS)) looks really good, and I'm currently checking it out for future usage.
----
As per addons, the only one I have related to combat logs is LoggerHead, which automatically will activate log recording upon entering user-defined zones, and will automatically turn off logging upon exiting these specific areas.
----
For other a combat log splitter, I use WoW Combat Log Splitter (wowclsp, wowclsp - Google Code) to break down my rather large files into the individual raid nights. This is an awesome tool, and I recommend it highly.
Fuster's Log Splitter ( Fuster's Log Splitter - Home) is another option that I toyed around with a while ago, but am personally sticking with wowclsp.
----
Each of the first three links has their own applet to upload/parse/archive/whatever to the data. A really cool option in WMO's uploader, in the second tab, is a place to merge multiple logs. This can be invaluable in getting one good log for those sites that do not handle the merging of logs on their end.
----
There are certainly more resources than the ones I mentioned, but this seems to be a pretty thorough overview of the general market, even if it may not be all-inclusive. Definitely play around with each of the utilities and sites, as there are cool little goodies to be had in each program.

Is there a parsing program available that can export the information to a spreadsheet?
Apologies for bringing a thread back from the dead, but I've not had much luck locating one thus far.

In the case of Microsoft Excel, the included tools are sufficient for this purpose, but require several stages of formatting.
From Excel, open the log file, be sure to have the file viewer set to look at all files (*.*). You will immediately get the Text Import Wizard. Select the "Fixed Width" radio button, then hit Next for the rest of the steps.
You'll need to bring up Text-To-Columns wizard to complete the import. In all "modern" versions of Excel, you'll find it in the Data menu. It's similar to the Text Import Wizard, select the Delimited Option this time, and in the next step, select Comma as your delimiter.
Other spreadsheet programs should have similar tools and processes to the one I described for Excel.
