Hit Rating/Crit Rating (Rogues)
 

I was getting into a discussion with a friend of mine, and he said as long as your increased hit % is 3/4 of your crit%, you would never lose any crits because of how the attack table works. This to me seems simply asinine, wouldn't your hit have to be almost 24% to never lose any crits? Or is my understanding of the attack table and hit rating completely off?

Any help/insight is appreciated.

So, Assuming ~5% dodge, 0 for parry and block and the new ~25% glancing, thats only 30% of your table. If you had the maximum 25.5% chance to miss, you could still safely have 64.5% crit chance. This of course would be completely stupid, but yea. Even under the old 40% glancing blow mechanic, if you were standing in front of a mob getting cleaved blocked and parried.. you'd be at 5 dodge, 5 block, 5 parry, 40 glance = 55%. Even 10% +to hit chance would still allow for 30% crit (25% default chance to miss - 10% = 15.. 55+15 = 70, 100-70 = 30).

So yea, your friend is an idiot.

So what's a good amount of hit to aim for for raiding?

Perhaps you could ask this question in the Rogue DPS Spreadsheet thread on the first page of this forum?

308 hit rating + precision + WEx
324 hit rating + precision w/o WEx

If you have items w/ + weapon skill rating, you can drop that hit rating number by 1.577 for each point of weapon skill (not rating) you add.

But remember, you don't want to gimp your other stats just to get the hit cap. I wouldn't replace Abacus of Violent Odds with Rune of the Guard Captain just to go from 298 to 308 hit rating, since the Abacus is a vastly superior item.

It's a rather extreme example, but it illustrates the point. This is why the rogue DPS and rogue gear spreadsheets are so nice, because the authors have done all the math to give you a good idea whether or not that item with +hit is worth using over that item with more AP/crit, given your current stats.

Is Ring of Lethality better than Violet Signet of the Master Assassin? I lose a little hit, but when my miss chance is only 1-2%, the crit and AP is enough to offset that loss.
