2.3 is even more of a buff to resto than I initially thought. It's a combination of things. 50 mp5 from water shield minimum, 62.5 mp5 from manaspring, new 2 pc T6 bonus (10% cheaper chain heal), and the built in stopcast make my healing output simply ridiculous now.

On Naj'entus tonight I was able to spam max rank chain heal for the entire fight only stopping to recast totems and water shield. I used 1 super mana potion which probably wasn't necessary whereas before I would spam them every 2 min and occasionally downrank.

I was looking at the new Heroic badge rewards and saw: Totem of Living Water - Items - World of Warcraft

Would this be an upgrade over my Totem of Healing Rains - Items - World of Warcraft

Also, lots of the new badge gear has +spell haste on it - is this a useful stat to get as a Resto spec?

try to use item tags instead of linking to wowhead. [ item ] item name [ /item ] without the spaces in the tag.

[Totem of Healing Rains] vs [Totem of Living Water]

one increases amount healed one decreases mana cost.. do you need more mana or more healing... the answer will be situational and dependant on your gear.

there is some discussing of haste in this thread.

Changes in ideal build for a resto shaman post 2.3?

With improvements in mana spring totem and the water shield, are there any anticipated changes in the ideal build for a resto shaman? Or is it still considered to be 8/0/53 ? (This question seems especially relevant today since Blizzard has reset all the talent points for shamans.)

They have? Sweet.

In terms of ideal builds, I don't think that anything would change. The only talent I'd suggest dropping (totemic focus) is already dropped in that build.

Yeah there was the bug with the 2h talent, they just gave shaman who previously had that talent point a single point back, so it let enhancement shaman go with a 0/41/21 spec. The easiest way I suppose was to give all shaman a talent reset.

It was all of the restoration T6 pieces. It was quickly acknowledged as a bug and hotfixed. The items were deleted yesterday(?), anyone who purchased the items received (at least) a warning on their account, and those who attempted to exploit it by purchasing multiple items to either sell or disenchant received suspensions.

It's probably better that you weren't around for it.

2.3.2 latest notes on EU (german) boards have a 30 second cooldown on the new mana cost reduced Earth Shield. Ugh.

WoW-Europe.com Foren -> 2.3.2 PTR Patch Notes

Translated:

General
* /timetest is a command that can be run to provide information on game performance. /timetest 0 turns the command off. When the command is issued, the next time a player uses a flight master to travel, certain statistics will be measured and displayed at the end of that flight. All weather effects and spawns are shutdown during the test.
* Effects triggered from being critically hit: Many abilities and talents were changed in 2.3.0 to allow them to trigger from critical strikes that occurred while the player benefitting from them was sitting.
* Quest givers with blue question marks no longer show up on the minimap.
* NPC's who you have completed a quest for will display a question mark on mouseover rather than an exclamation point.
* The bank controls for the guildmaster level of a guild is now grayed out. A guildmaster always has full access to a guild bank and this cannot be changed.
* A "Withdraw-Repair Only" button has been added to the guild bank controls. If this is set for a guild rank, then that rank cannot actually withdraw funds from the guild bank, but they can still use that daily amount of money for repairs.
* You will now automatically stand up when attacked, even if the attack doesn’t land.

Druids
* Lifebloom: When this ability is refreshed it will take on the strength of the incoming Lifebloom effect, rather than maintain the existing strength.

Hunters
* Arcane Shot: Ranks 1-5 will once again deal bonus damage based on attack power.
* Aspect of the Viper effect increased.
* Freezing Trap is no longer limited to one target at a time.
* Pet leveling speed has been increased.

Mages
* Cold Snap (Frost) cooldown reduced. It is now in the Ice Block position in the talent tree. This ability will no longer reset the cooldown on Fire Ward.
* Conjure Mana Gem mana restore variance substantially reduced,(Rank 5 – Emerald) now restores 2340 to 2460 mana and has three charges.
* Ice Block (Frost) is now available on the trainer to all mages at level 30.
* Icy Veins (NEW Frost Talent) decreases casting time of all spells by 20% and increases the chance your chilling effects will freeze the target by 10%. Lasts 20 sec. 3 min cooldown. It is now in the Cold Snap position in the talent tree.

Paladins
* Crusader Strike (Retribution) now causes 110% of weapon damage and no longer gains any bonus from spell damage.
* Righteous Fury: This spell will no longer cost twice the listed mana to cast.
* Sanctified Judgements (Retribution) now returns 80% of the Seal's mana cost, increased from 50%.

Rogues
* Cheat Death: When multiple attacks land simultaenously, all those resolved after the attack which triggered Cheat Death will now have their damage reduced by 90% as intended. However, the combat log will still report them doing full damage.
* Hemorrhage: Rank 4 of this ability no longer has its charges consumed by non-physical attacks and spells.
* Hemorrhage weapon damage reduced from 125% to 110%, but the damage debuff has been increased.
* Shadowstep now awards 1 combo point.

Shaman
* Earth Shield (Restoration) mana cost reduced, now it has a 30 second cooldown.
* Lightning Shield mana cost reduced.
* Water Shield now restores mana periodically regardless of how many charges remain. Duration increased to 10 minutes.

Warlock
* The health cost taken from the Warlock after using Health Funnel will now remain consistent between uses.

Warrior
* Defiance: The expertise granted by this talent now works properly in all stances.
* Warriors no longer lose rage when using a macro to enter a stance they’re already in.

Professions
* Cooking
o Goldthorn Tea was erroneously unlearned by most players who had learned the recipe. The recipe has been re-enabled and can be learned again from Henry Stern in Razorfen Downs at no cost.

* Enchanting
o Enchant Shield - Resilience now requires a Runed Fel Iron Rod instead of a Runed Adamantite Rod.

* Leatherworking
o Increased the range of leatherworking drums to 40 yards. Drums of Panic remains unchanged at 8 yards.

Items
* Amani Charm of the Witch Doctor: Tooltip typo corrected.
* Hearthstone: The cast time on this item is no longer affected by spell haste.
* Hex Shrunken Head: This item now has a 20 second shared cooldown with other similar trinkets.
* Icy Chill Enchant: The triggered effect from this enchantment will now cause a melee slow and movement snare as intended.
* Idol of the Unseen Moon: This item now has a 30 second cooldown on being triggered.
* Idol of Terror: The triggered agility buff from this item no longer overwrites other agility buffs.
* The Netherscale Ammo Pouch is no longer a Unique item.
* The Knothide Quiver is no longer unique.

Dungeons and Raids
o Heroic Coilfang Resevoir- Steamvaults
o [ul]Mekgineer Steamrigger's Main Chambers Access Panel is no longer interactable until Mekgineer Steamrigger has been killed.

* Tempest Keep- The Eye
o The number of Blood Elves guarding Prince Kael'Thas' room has been reduced.

* Zul’Aman
o The Amani'shi Warrior's Charge ability now has a minimum range.
o The melee haste provided by Halazzi's Frenzy has been reduced to 100%.
o Dragonhawks in Zul'Aman can now be skinned. This doesn't include dragonhawks that do not have loot.

Quests
* Blade's Edge Mountains: Players accepting the bombing run quests in Blade's Edge Plateaus will no longer cause other players in the region to stand up.

User Interface
* There is now an option to turn off the screen edge damage flash when you have a fullscreen UI up.
* You can sell stacks by dropping them on the merchant window again.
* Ready check (/readycheck) will now display a visual display of each party/raid member's status next to their name. This will display in the Party UI, the Raid UI and the Raid pullout UI. A player will get a check mark if they are ready, a question mark if they have not replied and a red X if they are not ready or are afk.
* You can now see raid members on the minimap as dark blue dots in addition to party members which still display as light blue dots.
* You can now shift click names while the petition window is open to paste them into the petition.
* Fixed various problems with /castsequence getting stuck.
* /cast will toggle spells again unless the name is prefixed with an exclamation mark, e.g. /castsequence Steady Shot, !Auto Shot

Bug Fixes
* Characters may now possess up to five Paper Flying Machines in a single stack.
* Fixed “Spell/Ability is not ready yet” message when clicking quickly at the beginning of a cast.

* Disconnecting a USB HeadSet will no longer cause problems with the Voice Chat dropdown menus.
* Clockwork Rocket Bots will no longer attack each other in Shattrath City.
* Channel changes will now appear properly in the chat log after zoning in or out of instances.
* Unplugging headphones/speakers then plugging them back in while in WoW no longer disables all sound in WoW
* If the original owner of a custom channel gives leadership away their options menu will no longer show that they have moderation privileges.

* Tricky Treats now have their proper real-time (rather than game-time) duration of 24 hours.

Earthshield Questions

I am somewhat new to the Resto Shaman line, having spent my leveling up time with the Enhancement line. I did this primarily because I wanted to be a healer in guild groups and in BG and Arena battles.

I am now finding that my Earthshield is getting debuffed so often that it has become almost useless to me in any PvP encounter. Is there something I am missing here? I almost want to say poor little me because this seems like one of our defining attributes in the Resto line. I am not aware of another class where such an important characteristic gets debuffed so easily and often.

Should I be concentrating on watershield now for Arena and other PvP battle grounds and leave the Earth shield for my PvE encounters?

I do have some gear now with plus healing at ~950 so I have a ways to go.

Advice is appreciated.

What do you mean, "debuffed?"

If you mean Purged, then you might be better off looking in the PvP forum in the first place. On that note, here's a post I searched up that, with the quote included, gives a look into the pros and cons of Earth Shield of ES in PvP (well, not entirely, but it's the closest i could find in a basic search)

Earthshield Questions

Thanks for that link. It was indeed helpful to me.

You are correct in saying that I was getting Purged instead of debuffed. My background in other gaming environments is showing up. Part of my trouble was with not only the Locks taking my Earthshield but also it seems like now Hunters are knocking it down with their arcane shots almost as fast as I can stick it up. On the other hand I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to Purge it off an opposing Shaman.

It does seem to me that there is great value to Earth shield in raiding although I am not currently involved in raiding. I may at some time look for a moderately active raiding group but for the time being PvE and Arena / Battle grounds are where I find myself most of the time. Were it up to me I would avoid the PvP entirely but for casual players it seems like the best way to get a set of gear going.

thanks again,

It's definitely a very good spell and talent, but since it's so good it's a priority to get dispelled. If you are against a lock with a felhunter, a hunter, a shaman or a priest, you're probably best off saving mana for heals and casting water shield. Against classes or teams that don't have a dispel, or after you've killed the person who can dispel, you should be able to fully use earth shield without wasting the mana.

How valuble is Healing Way now? I am thinking of dropping it from my spec, at this point I don't cast it much (most of our fights are too short and I'm +1700 healing so LHW still does a decent amount). Have other folks dropped it? Am I missing something here?

To tell the truth at this point (I took a break) I'm not sure what the best spec is for raid healing. I'm in Kara/Heroic epics and we are on Kael/Vashj (got to P3 Sunday for the first time).

Any suggestions with solid theorycraft to back them up?

If you are doing PVE raid healing you need to have healing way. There are still a lot of fights where healing wave is very very useful, and healing way helps out a lot.

Here are three different EJ resto shaman during the past few weeks:
Teewee - WWS
Kemosabe - WWS
Gurgthock - WWS

You can see what percentage of spells we use. While most of it is chain heal, we still use healing wave and lesser healing wave a lot. For raid healing you're best off probably with either 8/0/53 or 0/5/56, depending on preference.

Sorry, I'm a little confused on how the new watershield is going to work. Currently I love to use it against pet classes in arena and duels to get massive mana returns. Will this tactic still be viable come the new patch or will the watershield just grant a static 50mp5 buff for 10 min?

Thank-you.

It is a hybrid.

If nothing hits you, It is a 10 minute 50mp5 Buff. However if something hits you it takes a charge away for 200 mana (like it currently does) for 3 charges (like it currently does). So after 3 hits you will still need to refresh.

Basically it is a buff to the shamans in PVE on fights where they don't get hit allowing them to just cast once, rather than have yet "another" short buff (eg <2 min) on the GCD.

It's a pretty big buff, the best part imo is you can refresh it whenever you have a spare GCD without wasting any mana. With the current water shield, in order to get the most mana possible you need to cast another water shield either immediately after the last globe gets eaten or it expires after the first minute. If you waste any time, or refresh too early, you are potentially wasting mana. With the new water shield you can refresh whenever you want and you still get the same mana return, depending on how many hits you take.

To be exact, it is a small buff in fights where you don't get hit, because you don't have to refresh your watershield (and thus use a GCD) every minute. It is a huge buff in fights where your watershield procs.

Why?

If you don't get hit at all, both the old and the new watershield grant you 50 mp5 (if you always refresh your watershield). However, lets say you are being hit around every 25 seconds. With the 2,3 watershield, this would mean that you get 2 procs of the watershield (at 25 and 50 seconds) and then another proc when it expires (at 60 seconds) - netting you 50 mp5. This means that you didn't benefit from the procs of the watershield at all.

With the new watershield, this looks differently: You will get procs at 25, 50, and 75 seconds - at which point you need to refresh your watershield. So how much mp5 equivalent did you get from this? You got the 600 Mana from the procs AND the 50mp5 bonus from having the watershield on. This amounts to a total of 90 mp5 equivalent. So, using this example, the new watershield gave you 40 mp5 more than before.

Basically, with the current watershield, if the watershield does not proc often enough to be used up before it expires (after one minute), the procs did not benefit you at all. With the new watershield, every proc gives you bonus Mana.

I don't believe that that is correct. My testing on the PTR showed that when you you lose a charge on the watershield, that the actual amount of mp5 went down, thus balancing the total mp5 which you get. So let's say you put on WS and start your mp5. 2 minutes later you take one hit removing one globe. Your passive mp5 from the shield would then reduce to 33.3 mp5 after you have received the 200 for the used globe. So in theory if you managed to have all the globes used at almost the same time then it would be a slightly higher mp5, but for the most part it does not seem to actually effect the total mp5 that it gives. The nice thing about this is that it will grant a large, passive mp5, which is so critical for resto shaman and it will no longer cause us to activate the GCD once a minute to receive that benefit. The 2.3 version of WS is nice, but I think that the 2.3.2 will be even better. It's a nice, subtle refinement.
