Warrior Off tank (main) Main tank (secondary) build
Hello guys,
this is the first time I am posting in your forum and with all these discussions going on I feel like a newb compared to most of you. Therefore I would really like to have your opinion upon my warrior build. The story is as follows: I joined Tempesta Equitatus almost a year ago as a tank. At that time I was experiencing my first end game raiding and I have learned the ropes of a full tanking spec. When Tbc was released along with the 25 man instances and having more than 1 or 2 MT in a dual raiding schedule in Khara have become obsolete... I was the third in the row tank and even though now I function primarily as an off tank I usually get my share of main tanking. My guild usually dual raids Kharazan which I could say is on farm status with any raid setups. Nevertheless, I need to know whether there is a viable "hybrid" spec that I could use in order to be a good offtank and keep aggro on certain bosses ands also go melee when the need occurs..i.e. in encounters like Gruul, Nightbane, Prince Malchezaar etc.. The thing is though that I am stacking tank gear (got 2 T4 items already and several epics from Khara) atm and that's what I will be getting in the near future. So I would have to combine my tanking gear with a decent dps output through talents and maybe dual weild (? I have King's defender and Fool's bane from Ilhoof) I am thinking of the following spec: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=LqhcdhbRGZVZzEtoGM0c I currently have: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TV0cZZfEtoGMdcest Do you have any suggestions? I would really appreciate it cause I would love to help my guild get a boost in dps without losing a viable overall tank.. Thank you again |
I scanned over your talents and I don't really find any of them particularly viable for a few reasons.
First off, both builds are made so that you lack an effective spammable dps rage dump like bt/ww. Second, both builds are missing out on one of the most important boss debuffs in the game, Improved Demoralizing Shout. If I were to respec in order to be an effective dps source when needed, while being a viable tank, I'd go something like this: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TVZVxzmxxoVuVo0Ezoh Your damage is fairly high with this build while having above average threat production alogn with having imp demo. If you prefer more mitigation debuffs, you can do this as well: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TV0cZVxzmxxoVzZ0Etoh0z With this build, you yourself have a have a bit more damage while providing a vital stun and the Imp TC debuff which is also a very powerful boss debuff. There's also the MS/Cruelty/Prot build but I'll leave you to figuring that out. I'm a bit biased towards MS because in the past atleast (and imo even now), its damage potential is average at best. |

Because a 21 second shield wall is the most amusing thing in the world! Replace with your weapon spec of choice! Only 'real' problem with this build is no focused rage or dps abilities. |
If you want to lean a bit more on the tanking side, you could try this build. I just made it up from guesswork, so it might be a spectacular failure in practice, but who knows?
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=pZVx0VxZbEtohzd0xst The basic idea is to make devastate spam viable dps. It is derived from the devastate changes on beta that never went live but would have made protection a top dps build. The key talents are a combination of dual wield spec, one hand spec, cruelty, vitality and devastate. The first four talents passively increase your damage while dual wielding. Devastate is the rage dump. As I said I cannot really tell how the dps will work out, but the build is absolutely main tank viable, even for the large raids. It also fits your available weapons and it is not so far away from what you use now. Might give that a try, if it sounds nice for you. ps: There is some thread here called "Warrior BC Talent Specs" or similar. |
Edit: I totally missed the point of the thread, the post still stands though.
Assuming you want a MT/OT group. I think these two specs would do pretty well together: MT: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TV0cZVZcEtohMdMest OT: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TVZVx0VZcAtobMd0ekt Within the group this would give 5/5 Commanding Presence, 3/3 Imp Thunder Clap and 5/5 Imp Demo Shout while maintaining 41 points in Prot for devastate for both MT and OT. |
Funny you should ask, I just suggested this spec to our offtank:
http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=TZVxzVRxoVzZ0EtoGMz0x Flurry + 1hspec combine fairly well for dpsing and when offtanking provides enough agro. When attempting to stay at #2 agro, the improved rage gen and agro from the 2 talents helps make up for not having shield slam. If you use tank gear with agility on it, the agro ramps up even better without hurting your mitigation too horribly. The big downside is no imp tclap but you can't have it all. |
Currently I am in an offtanking role as a warrior, so the only tanking I really find myself doing is for Hydross, A'lar and trash. I am specc'd pretty much full prot at the moment, but my guild is having some discussion about me speccing into blood frenzy, something like:
Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft How viable is this for the tanking that I have been doing, will be doing in BT/Hyjal, and will the dps I add with myself and blood frenzy be significant enough for me to switch to something like this? |
With feral druids around, this isn't a very good role for a warrior. Your set pieces go for tanking gear, and it's difficult to justify giving you weapons over a rogue. You are going to have a hard time gearing for dps. To have enough in prot to be considered as a raid tank, you are not going to be able to DPS to any acceptable level. Doing slightly more damage is not going to make or break any encounter. Having a spec that makes you able to really tank if your #1 or #2 guys are gone might.
My advice: Spec all the way prot and be a debuff/BS bitch while waiting for the #1 or #2 guy to be absent/quit. Spec fury while letting the guild leader know you would step up to tank if given a chance. Or reroll druid. Don't try and do two things, then do them poorly. |

Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft I think 3/3 Tactical Mastery in TBC isn't needed so much (can't say I ever cry for it in instance 5/10/25) and imp. BRage will help you make a good start on boss. |
I as an MT prefer having imp TC myself because it's not really that huge a drop in TPS using it 2-3 times a minute instead of devastate. I usually roll with 10/5/46 (Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft).
The OT I prefer is someone with at least 15 points in fury for improved demo shout and full commanding presence (270 hp is nice). This is very similar to the MT spec but maybe too low dps-wise for you, although devastate spam is pretty useful in fury gear. (Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft) As previously stated, 0/31/30 has some great synergy going on (Talent Calculator - World of Warcraft) Same as one fury build above but I really prefer 10% armor over 5% parry.
