[Hunter] Nightbane / +hit

I remember 8.6% being the +hit cap against lvl 73 mobs / bosses. However with 8.62% i missed nightbane, so before i try to find the S.S to prove this, id like to see if there is anything special with nightbane that i may not of noticed during the fight that increases his defense or reduces my hit rate.

Edited with picture showing miss..

i think there's a minimal miss rate (it can go under 1%) that can't be eradicated with gear/talents/racials no matter what.

Working Theories of Theorycrafting as of 2.1

doesn't talk about a minimal hit % you cant overcome as ranged. It does talk about it as a caster though.

I believe you're looking for this:

http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=30130

Although that's only applied to targets very close to him. Is it possible you ran through him and got the debuff without noticing it?. If that's not the case, this kind of behavior has been observed with several other raid encounters, most notably in Naxxramas, and I think that it's the general concensus that Blizzard is sneaking in extra defense on some bosses, which would give you a small chance to miss, even at the hit cap.

Just out of curiousity, why is your auto-shot miss colored yellow in your log, when all other autos are white?

Generally I thought there was a generic "you cannot get more than 99% hit" rule in the game, if you are basically saying that is not the case that is certainly interesting.

I do find it interesting that the stickies post says 137 hit rating to never miss, while you are 1 point shy of that at 136. I think you found that 1 in a million shot that missed. Unless you have a talent someplace that increases your hit% that's not noted on your character sheet, if so then I'm at a loss.

I seem to remember a 0.2% miss rate when at the hit cap? At least from the 60 days, so it shouldn't have changed any at 70.

8.6% is probably just a truncated version of a number higher than 8.62% (your +hit percentage) but not high enough to round to 8.7%. Therefore, you will still miss some shots.

As far as I know, that only applies to spells. I have seen reports from multiple rogues that once they had reached 25.5% hit (308 hit rating + weapon expertise) that they no longer recorded any misses at all.

While it's important in an academic sense, 0.01% or 0.1% chance to miss is by and large unimportant in damage calcuations (they represent such small deviations from the model that they are certainly dwarfed by the assumptions made in calculations - such as not clipping shots, good latency, etc). Likewise, at 0.1% chance to miss you have to shoot 1000 shots to get a single miss, statistically speaking.

So yes, it would be nice to know if there is an ineradicable miss margin, but until we can model dps to within significant confidence intervals (typically 5% or 1%, in most cases), it's simply not a big deal.

No clue, I remember this started happening a long time ago when people on the hunter WoW boards were QQing and moaning that we would start to suffer glancing blows since our auto attacks became white. However that turned out to not be the case.

Yes, my pet was "green" before the fight started, and incase some of the happiness from feeding him would be overkill (ie Your pet gains 0 happiness from x) I didnt want to waste food. Yes i am cheap, lack time to farm for gold even as a hunter... even the daily's are beyond my reach 2 days outa the week atleast.

I didn't notice that the # in the stickies said 137, i just saw the 8.6 (and 8.62 for 2H melee) and used that number, I may be off an incredibly small amount of +hit, whatever 1 hit rating =, and i became incredibly unlucky. Also my talent spec is 41/20/0 so i dont have any +hit modifiers from there. I did not recieve burning ash as i outrange the fear. Though the tank did get feared for a split second once throughout the fight (then nightbane went for me) and i don't recall when that happened in relation to this SS. I guess i'll keep plugging away at 136 hit rating and see if i see another miss.

That is okay, it is just I hate looking at a slightly unhappy pet symbol as it just makes me a little sad for the poor guy.

On that note, Melee/Hunters can have a 100% hit rate, interesting, and this is probably what has been stated in that it is a truncated value of something like 8.64% and this probably was a very unlikely miss.
