I was hoping there might be some kind of alternative using a /castsequence but reading this thread it is apparent that it too suffers from clients waiting for server acknowledgments.
Thanks again guys! I'll keep doing things manually except for macroing KC with instant shots to save buttons. Hopefully a change to /stopcasting would benefit us by separating it from Auto shot.

Actually using kill command with /stopcasting in macros does work!
The trick is - autoshot isn´t really "casting" until 0.5s before the actual shot. So if you stopcast it anytime earlier and start autoshot again immediatly afterwards autoshot won´t be delayed.
I´m using the macro
#show Steady Shot
/stopcasting
/cast [target=pettarget, pet, exists] Kill Command
/stopcasting
/cast Auto Shot
/castsequence Steady Shot, Auto Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear();
which works perfectly fine.

If anyone is still banging their head against the wall trying to explain shot rotations and shot clipping to people in the guild it's vaguely possible that this document may help:
A Hunters Guide to Shot Rotations
I wrote it for a friend levelling her hunter, to explain some basic bits, and then rewrote it as a L70 guide when asked.
I should point out it's not going to teach anyone who is a regular reader of these forums anything at all - it really is a guide for someone starting at very little knowledge of hunter theory.
However, if it can be of any help to anyone in getting over some basic points to new Hunters then you are more than welcome to take and use any of the document content.

Rotation for 1.80 speed and less? =)
I´ve got a hunter as an alt i´m playing form time to time. I´ve found the info in this thread very useful. Only thing i´ve not been able to find is if auto-shot is the only thing i should be using if i have speed at 1.57 (or lower)? =)
And looking at quest-bows/guns and drops from instances it seems i´ll be getting a higher DPS-ranged weap in 5-7 lvls if i compare DPS purly on the weapons.
I´m using the GM Bow with 1.8 speed and it´s down to 1.57 after quiver. Now, if i time in steady shots in that rotation will if affect the dps by going up or down? (a few thousand xp from 62 atm) =)

Could you please clarify this Midnight?
Is your Auto-shot timer starting after you've finished your Steady every rotation OR are you not interrupting Auto at all?
For me (with high latency) I'm concerned that a macro like this would be almost the same as clipping my shot with an ability. Either way I delay an auto-shot cycle.
I'm also a bit wary of using /castsequence given what has been said a page back.
Thanks!

Hey, we've got hunters in my guild who are in need of some tips. I'll go through the document with them.
I don't have any critical feedback yet. At first glance it looks really good!
With Serpent Sting in Raids, I'd argue the point somebody has stated earlier in this thread. Not only is it mana inefficient and dangerous with crowd control it also isn't the best thing you can do with your Global cooldown if you are really going all out for damage.

An Auto-Steady rotation should definitely do more damage for you than just using Auto Shot. Because your attack speed is so low, your next shot will be delayed... but it's still a net gain in DPS.
To maximize your damage, you should probably use a 1:1 rotation (Auto, Steady), but replace Steady with Arcane or Multi whenever possible.

I am wondering if I can get away with keeping my same standard 1.5/1 rotation when quick shots rank 2 procs- I am using a sunfury bow with 15% quiver.
I worked it out graphically and it seems to be OK. I wanted to avoid micro-managing my rotation and IAotH rank 5 mucked it up, so I went with just two ranks hoping I would be able to avoid clipping because there's enough 'slack' in the rotation to pick it up. Anybody have experience with this?

This guide also does not take into consideration the haste-scaling casting time of Steady Shot. A nice guide nevertheless.
Edit: The scaling is mentioned at the skill overview. I was aiming at the shot rotation section, where a standard 1.5 is used.
My request to the OP is to update the theory.
Thanks.

I'm not really sure that /stopcasting in the macro will work.
My KC is separated form the shoot rotation macro. I'm using Quartz and I did some tests trying to "kill" the latency.
/stopcasting
/cast Kill Command
Such macro for sure stop casting the Auto Shot as well.

Question, I use the following macro...
#showtooltip Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/castsequence reset=3 Steady Shot, Auto Shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget] Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear(); UIErrorsFrame:Show()
Which seems to work fine, I am new to this, any suggestions?
Also, is it alright to spam the macro, or does it not allow the Kill Command to go through?

Nah you shouldn't have a problem with that one, it's the same one I use and yes, you can spam it and Kill Command will go through.

hunter stuff
I have been in a casual raiding guild for quite a while, I did very little raiding pre bc, and now I am raiding every week. I have always have had very high opinion of my skills to do max dps casting shots without the assistance of a macro to spam, and I generally out dps other hunters I encounter unless they severely out gear me. I think though that our server which at one point had 30% hunters just doesn't have enough skilled hunters to make them noticeable. I can here with a question about macro writing, I finally decided that I want to try out a cast macro, mainly because I am starting to run out of mana in longer fights. Basically I want help writing a macro that I can spam that will do {Steady Multi Auto Steady Auto Steady Auto Steady Auto}. I have no idea how to write a cast sequence macro and reading about it didn't really help me except for doing math to see what the theoretical optimal dps cast sequence would be. So I am hoping someone will help me.
P.S. My wep speed is 2.5 that is why i have included multi shot in the cast rotation and I think that I want the sequence to reset every 10 seconds might be prevalent as well. I hope some one can help.
*Edit Oh I forgot to mention that I'm only planing on using this when there is no cc. And in addition is there a way to make the same macro do kill command as well whenever it is up?

Have a look at this post:
Shortcut to post in [Hunter]Help me please thread that answers this
Then read through that thread as you have time. You wont want to be using KC as a MM/SV hunter, especially if you are mana challenged.

After reading this Thread for a while I decided to buy a new weapon.
I'm Beastmaster Specced and the new Crossbow I bought was Grand Marshal's Heavy Crossbow.
With this slow weapon I have the chance to add another Shoot to the rotation.
#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Hide()
/castsequence reset=combat Arcane Shot, Auto Shot, Steady Shot, Auto Shot, Steady Shot, Auto Shot, Steady Shot
/cast [exists,target=pettarget] Kill Command
This works increadible good for me.
Unfotunatly, this is the only ranged weapon that slow in the game.

Hmm, I just tried that and nothing was shooting. I.e., all shots got interrupted. My latency was around 75msec at the time. I did have my cat pet at my side (was doing this on Dr. Boom.)
Best as I can tell, the stopcasting is also stopping any steady shot from casting. I need to remove both stopcasting lines to fix the problem but then we're essentially back to the old macro.

Do beautiful guides like this one exist here for mages/locks/elemental shammys? I've tried advanced searches for
Mage spell-rotation
and many other permutations of that thought, to no avail. I'm kinda new here, sorry if this is against rules or anything

WoW Forums -> To be a Tree: The Evolution of Healing
For a resto druid if youre interested. Saw something about spell rotation somewhere there.
As for mages/locks, theres way large variety of rotations depending on tree/utility talents i believe, so i guess its more complicated for them, but maybe not that vital like for hunters.

2.3 /stop casting changes
First time poster -
I'm curious if anyone has information on usable 2.3 version of this macro as the /stop casting feature no longer works in the same manor pre 2.3?
Thanks.

i'm not thinking nearly as complexly as some of you are but i have taken alot of what was said here and bumped my dps up quite a bit. the macros that have been posted have been especially helpful even if just taken the way they are.
i took the
castsequence reset=3 steady shot, auto shot
+ KC stuff
and parlayed that to include arcane shot and another one that includes multi
#showtooltip Arcane Shot
/castsequence reset=6 Steady Shot, arcane Shot, Auto Shot, steady shot, auto shot
/cast [target=pet, dead]; [nopet]; [target=pettarget, exists] Kill Command
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
the reset happens in time for arcane shot to come back up and there's nearly no down time in the rotation, a steady stream of yellow white, yellow white. i had been using arcane shot as the 1st shot in the rotation but for obvious timing reasons i moved it to the 2nd to make sure to clear the GCD + .5s. the arcane shot has the length of the autoshot.
and i've been under the impression that the reset=6 resets dynamically every 6 seconds. so if you press the button again before the 6 seconds are up it doesnt reset the macro. so for anyone who has reset=2,3 and has any more than one cast of steady and auto is wasting. anything after those will not be fired. stick with
castsequence reset=2,3 steady shot, auto shot
like i said i'm not that tech about this but i get a solid 1k dps + in all sorts of situations barring those you have to move around alot.
i pair the macro above with a similar multi shot macro that has issues so i wont post it yet.

Can anyone confirm some information about the broken steady shot mechanic that existed at one point?
I remember it used to give you a free autoshot after every steady shot. I believe that came into play at 2.0. Can anyone confirm at what point this was fixed?
It essentially made slow weapons even more essential than they were before.
Edit: clarification, free autoshot meaning it set the autoshot timer to zero so that an autoshot fired after every steady shot as though it were fully queued up.
