[protection warrior] Can someone explain this ?

Hello everyone.

I play a protection warrior and I think I have a pretty good knowledge of tanking mechanics, but today I have a question for you. A few hours ago, someone from my guild came with a screenshot, asking me : "how is that possible?". I don't know where this screenshot comes from, but we can see a french protection warrior on it, with his combat log saying "mob X crits you for 6497. You die." On the picture you can see that the warrior has 495 defense.

So, how is it possible ? Did I miss something stupid (if so, feel free to delete this thread), or is it a fake ?

Anyway, here is the screenshot :

edit : I can't see it, so I don't know if it's visible or not. Here is the url if you can't see it :

Some mobs may have a higher crit rate. Generally dual wielders, but I think it's due to the "rogue" design.

The warrior could have, purposely or accidentally, sat down, too. If you have a button bound to /sit, just tapping it and starting to sit is enough to be crit.

I have seen a post like this on the french forum some time ago, the explanation was that a feral druid was mindcontroled so he gave +5% critic to some of the mobs.

Oh ok, didn't think about this one. Well, this thread became useless then ;).

Thanks for the answer!

ps: unlucky warrior...

There have been threads on this in the WoW warrior forums where someone over the defense cap was crit (critted?). Without doing an in-depth look into it, I'd say it's a bad roll of the dice.

I can post a screenshot later of myself getting crit by High King Maulgar as a bear with the defense cap (415 + 3/3 SotF) PLUS ~70 resilience. I never figured out why, just chalked it to some extremely rare roll.

Hoonboof 07/17/07 11:46 AM

There was a Druid MC'd giving leader of the pack to the mobs, in that case he would have needed 615 defense to not have been critted. An other explanation for getting critted while defense capped is accidentally sitting down.

I don't believe in the 'rare random chance' roll anymore.

There's also the possibility of defense rounding up in tooltips. It takes 348 defense to actually get to 495, even though the game will show 495 in the tooltip with only 347 defense

unless the game rounds up 5 whole numbers I don't think that has anything to do with it :)

Crit

Even if you go past the crit cap for defence, boss's and mobs still have a 1% chance for you to be critted, it is very rare however it does happen.

There is a picture floating around the EU forums where a prot warrior with over 500 defence still gets critted and dies.

If it would be 1% there wouldn't be threads like this. 1% means it would happen to every Tank every day. This would be very fatal and would make nearly every boss in game unkillable (at least without luck factoring in).

I'm really disappointed that this "Tank Myth" which pops up again and again in so many forums still finds it's way in the HQ-Forum EJ is.

Every single SS I saw showing a Crit on a "crit-immune" Tank could be explained by sitting, MC on Feral or those funny mobs in Shadowlab.

Are the eredar in arcatraz also on the list of known offenders for inexplicable crits? I was crit by one of those when i was theoretically uncrittable by raid bosses. They don't mind control, and i am reasonably certain i did not pick that moment to take up tanking while sitting down. And the rounding thing can be ruled out by them not being 73. That said, i have not noticed any once in a blue moon crits on raid bosses, so i thought it might just be a peculiarity of that mob.

I remember reading some very long time ago somehwere that even when your defense is supposed to give you 0% chance to be crit, in reality you will still have some extremely low chance to be crit regardless, and "crit immune" people reported they got crit. This is probably experiencing it in first person. What I really wonder is if that chance gets knocked off the table when shield block is up (it should probably? making it even more rare).

I am prot and have about 520 DEF in normal gear. I've been crit by Maulgar twice in the same pull of him. That particular night last week was terrible for us. We've only killed him 3 or 4 times (Gruul twice) but we've never had the trouble we did that night. He was hitting harder than normal and like I said, crit me multiple times. I ended up taking off every piece of gear and putting it back on to make sure I wasn't missing something.

Not sure how that could happen, but it definitely did. Could it just be a random bug?
