~* Your help requested: make a sweet informational thread about your class *~
In this forum we have a few threads that are extremely long and started by a question asking for personal advice and as such the first posts of it don't have a whole lot of information. Examples:
[Warlock] how do you do high DPS?
[Mage] How Can Arcane Damage Work?
Then we have a few that are awesome, information laden posts such as the following:
Enhance Shaman: The Collected Works of Theorycraft, Vol I
and the newly created
http://elitistjerks.com/f31/t16902-f...id_megathread/
Thanks to Malan and dukes for those two in particular
I think most can agree that the latter are better posts and can cut down drastically on the amount of commonly asked questions, as well as the "geez learn to use the search function" responses and infractions
I'm looking for volunteers to help out and make better threads to replace some of the existing ones which can then be closed. Information covered should include things like what gems/enchants to choose, talents, gear, and commonly asked questions.
If you're willing to create such thread, please post in this thread as well to let everyone know so we don't end up with duplicates.

Yes it's very good, thank you!
One thing I would add is general gem selection. Your post just shows meta gem selection unless there's something I missed. Even if you just say "living rubies everywhere" or whatever, some info on general gem selection would be nice.

Hm, I wouldn't mind starting a rogue thread. I suppose the main important thing you're looking for is having a first post that covers a lot of the most general information a player of the class would be looking for?

The moral of the story is:
|
I'd be happy to do a protection paladin thread, but there are likely better choices for an author given that my raiding experience only goes as far as Prince.
I'll do it tomorrow if nobody else picks it up by then.

Yeah. Specifically for rogues, things like selection weapons, gems, and the advantages and disadvantages to each talent spec would be helpful, as well as links to spreadsheets and other relevant threads. I'm sure other rogues could give more input about things they'd like to see.
The goal isn't to have just a single thread for each class and cram every single question in it, but having a 50 page thread that starts with a post from five months ago where someone is asking for help with their DPS on Gruul isn't the best starting point for discussion.

A roundup of the "new hotness" arcane missile spam data would be great. There is some terrific info in the Arcane thread, but at this point it is too unwieldy and really needs a summary post. I'm usually the first to tell someone to RTFM (or in this case, Use TF Search Function) but Beef has the right idea here. A thread with an actively maintained summary in the first post, with the supporting discussion below, is better for everyone's sanity.

Very long. Boethius bumped it some time ago to accommodate Malan's huge post, I'm sure he could do it again if need be. You won't need to reserve multiple posts.

Beef, are you looking for one thread for a particular spec of a class? For example, a holy priest thread versus a shadow priest thread? Or would they be lumped together? Don't want to create the Rosie O'Donnell of class threads.

Surely, having read all those threads, you would agree with me that the answer is a resounding yes.

I'd assume you want one thread per class / raid role combination, which is why there is currently a feral druid megathread and enhancement shaman megathread, not a druid thread and shaman thread. Rogues are going to be melee DPS no matter how they spec, so they don't need separate threads for each talent tree. Same concept for mages and hunters. Just my opinion for what it's worth, however.

One thing the Hunters (and now Mages) have done is create separate "Help Me" threads for people to post general questions to. Part of the problem in a lot of existing threads are the sheer volume of "answer this question specific to just me" posts that quickly accumulate and mask the core anaylsis and thinking going on.
Is it worth starting parallel threads for the individual questions for each class as well? The new theory that comes out of them can always be summed up in a new post to the main thread. This should prevent the threads from rapidly getting to the point where people can't be bothered to read them.
We could even have posts in the main thread moved to the "Help Me" threads if they belong there, since invariably some idiots will post their "Why does my X suck" questions in the wrong place.

I'd agree with this for the most part. Holy priests and shadow priests would have very different discussions and having them in one thread could get sloppy and confusing.
Rogues might be able to get by with just one thread, but a thread just for Arcane mages, or survival hunters wouldn't be a terrible thing as they have different decisions to make than other specs.
In regards to the Help Me threads, I don't have much experience with them so I'd like to hear your opinions. If people find that they're useful in reducing clutter and improving organization then I'm all for them. This is probably best handled on a case by case basis. For example, a Help Me thread wouldn't likely be needed for raid healing as a resto druid and could be handled in the main thread for it just fine.

I would say it reduces clutter by consolidating clutter into several distinct locations, but if you're browing through a thread like that anyway, chances are you'll pick up some helpful stuff while looking. Can't really hurt, might actually help - sort of like abusing prescription medication.

It's done a decent job of moving most of the non-content posts out of the 3 main Hunter threads. There's still some that gets posted to the theory threads, but no longer do you have 3-4 pages between real posts.
(I'm not saying someone asking for help isn't a real post, but if you are looking at the latest theory for how weapon skill relates to hit rating for Troll Hunters with a bow you don't want 75 Armory and WWS links to have to browse through.)

How complete are you planning to be? I was thinking about doing one when I saw the new druid mega thread. Is it barely begun, or are you close to finishing?
Also, what topics are you wanting to cover? We might be able to split some of the work, if some topics are talents, gear, gems, rotations, and enchants. Probably some other ones I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.
Edit: Assuming that one of us is going to end up writing it, send me a private message. Not much point in us cluttering up this thread.

Thread length right now is set to like 25,000 characters - not words - and I'm not sure if Boe increased the limit on all threads, or just on the Enhancement thread.
Don't forget that the Wiki will hopefully be coming out soon and a lot of these class compilation threads will do great as Wiki articles.
