Late reply so this may be irrelevant at this point, but...

... the feral in the melee group may yield slightly higher DPS for the melee group yes, but isn't everyone more concerned about raid DPS than just increasing the DPS of the melee group? The ret pally gains massively from windfury, the feral gains nothing. Assuming all else the same that alone tips the raid DPS in favour of the ret pally being in the melee group instead of the feral.

The LotP healing is irrelevant in most encounters since melee will be spending a large amount of time in no danger of dropping dead due to a lack of heals. If anything, stick the feral in the hunter group (if one's present) to keep FI x2 up longer on everyone in the group, and let the pets get some free healing from LotP, since if healing is tight, I'm sure the melee DPS will be higher on healer's priority lists than pets.
