Though, I guess you don't wanna give mages a 5 second "DoT" with ticks that interrupt casting time. God forbid anti-caster mechanics!

Due to the GCD it really isn't as insane as it appears on paper. You can certainly sneak in a fireblast or even a fireball during the "channel" but due to the way the talents are laid out, it's tough to make a really worthwhile spec until later levels. Of course it is a very imbalanced raiding bug though, allowing pretty silly dps with a huge dpm hit.
The bug though really illuminates some of the core problems with mages in BC. Although obviously unintended, it is oddly not so overpowering that I am actually even using it. I did run with slow/AM(bugged) for a little while but I've since then flopped back to a more functional pair of builds. Considerably less dps is available using either of the frost or fire variants that I'm playing with but definitely better dpm and control cannot be discounted.
PvP is another matter of course but I've been consistantly getting my ass handed to me by any number of other classes as it stands. Bugged AM with Slow is of course an absolute rog/war humiliation spec but those are exactly the classes that don't yet scare me. I'll revisit that opinion when I start seeing 15k HP warriors and 10k Rogues though of course =)

EDIT: Ignite isn't rolling like it once did. It's a little hard to notice when just soloing (ignite frankly is horrible for killing like-level non-elites anyhow) but the behavior is indeed changed. The second crit will reset the timer but half the old per-tick damage, allowing you to roll as normal but stretching the damage out over a longer time period. The real nerf was the discontinuation of ImpScorch/Firepower multiplying the ignite damage. While completely understandable, it does hurt sustained damage for a fire team on real targets a fair bit. I find it a little bit ironic as the new raid cap was probably going to nerf that anyhow but it is a solid balance move. I wouldn't cry if they threw us some compensation though!
