Stop the Fizzle

Other classes probably deal with it just as much, but I am getting really tired of listening to myself wrestle with the universal cooldown. The continuous fizzle noises and spell not ready spam are melting my brain. Is there any mod out there or method for muting the sound and suppressing the error messages?

Can't you disable Error messages in the default Sound Options? Works with my rogue, not sure about Casters though.

You can suppress the error messages with frame hide/show messages and you can suppress error speech with a Cvar, but there's no (non-file-replacement) way to suppress the "clunk" noise you get for fizzle.

Spam-wise, check out SpamIAm, configurable spam suppression; I think it's TBC compatible.

The old FastCast mod used to do this, I've been looking for a replacement as well

Heh, so it does that also? No wonder I thought it was a default UI thingy... Forgot I was running it.

So ErrorMonster disables that gong-like sound when attempting to click a trinket that is on cooldown? (The macro I have already disables the center-screen printed error text.)

Just tried it. Only the text.

Actually I'm quite certain you can use the default UI to take care of the character error speech. Most raiding Rogues would go nuts without being able to disable that.

It's not the charecter error speech I'm speaking about, I haven't heard that in the past two years. Sit in town without anyone targeted and hit your sinister strike button. That's the sound I want to suppress.

Why do you have sound on in the first place?

I can literally count the number of times I turned sound on since I began raiding on my first character.

1) Listen to the music in Magmadar cavern.

2) Hear the Majordomo and Ragnaros speeches once each.

3) Hear Vael and Nefarian speeches once each.

4) Hear ZG music briefly.

4) Hear AQ40 music briefly.

5) Hear Naxx music briefly.

6) Blood Elf newbie area for about 5 levels (longest ever time with music on in 2 years).

7) Nagrand for the Thrall "event".

Heck, most boss emotes if I've heard them at all it's over vent while other people talk (that's also the only way I ever heard that irritating "tank has died" sound from CTRA).

So yeah, turning sound off completely definitely works to stop error messages, ability not ready messages, and all the other stuff that gets in the way. If there was a way to knock out all the UI sound effects and just keep background music and boss emotes, let me know... I'm happy to get the music back more often, but hearing all the sound effects of the fight would just be overwhelming.

I would have thought this was possible from the default sound menu, just moving the effect's slider all the way to the left and the music slider to a volume you are comfortable with.

There is also a check box in there to disable the audio error messages but it doesn't effect the GCD one.

I have tried playing with no sound but it doesn't work for me, I find I use the audio cue's for reacting to many things.

I also get tons of information from sounds, not to mention immersion and enjoyment.

The inability to disable that sound is probably just an oversight. I wonder if it's possible to find the sound file and manually turn it into something much more subtle, or nonexistent.

Yeah, this one would get me the music, but TBH the music doesn't interest me that often. It's more being able to hear spoken dialogue (boss emotes and voice emotes) that I want to be able to hear without turning everything else on too.

Come to think of it, there IS one other sound I really miss. Stealth sound. But generally if I can hear the sound it's either too late or I can see the person anyway, and I don't PVP so much these days.

I think this one's one for the Blizzard UI board: give us more options for micromanaging sound.

Does anyone know why none of the new mods are able to disable this, because I know FastCast had an option to disable the sound (can't remember what it called it). It's really starting to drive me nuts. What can I say, I'm a button smasher

I have no idea if this will do it, but have you checked http://www.wowinterface.com/download...ideErrors.html ? I've seen at least one claim that it suppresses the trinket noise. If it doesn't, maybe that author has some ideas...?

See you, auntie.

I'll check it out when I get home tonight. I wish I could live without game sounds, I've tried and I just can't. I don't play with game music on unless it's a new zone though.

The GCD sound hasn't ever really bothered me, but ever since HFP I've had a trinket macro'd to my Mutilate...and that gong is supremely annoying.

I've done some looking around and the only advice I've ever found is to play with files and eliminate the sound that way (but, I've heard that tinkering with sound/image files can get a person banned...if they somehow found out).

Looking into the code of Fastcast, it has a setting which makes it not play: Sound\\interface\\uEscapeScreenOpen.wav in common.mpq after a spell fizzles.

If you want an addon solution it should be pretty easy to replicate that functionality if somone skilled in lua has some time on their hands

/script if not _clickfixed then __xps=PlaySound; function PlaySound(snd) if (snd~="uEscapeScreenOpen") then __xps(snd); end end _clickfixed=1; end

I think that'll work; basically the old solution to the raidframe click modified for the fizzle sound.

(Not yet tested, but if I get a second tonight I'll take a shot at it.)

OK, one fix that does work is to nuke a particular sound file; this fixes the cooldown noise you get when you try to use a spell that's on cooldown.

Put a blank sound file (like the one attached) into the following directory, named:

C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\Data\Sound\Spells\Fizzle

The sound file needs to be named FizzleHolyA.

This seems to nuke the sound.

edit: This is of course technically against the TOS, but then again, so was the blank sound fix for the PVP queue noise.

edit2: I spoke too soon. You need to make 5 files in that directory to fully protect, as each school has a different fizzle effect (Holy and Arcane apparently share theirs): FizzleFireA, FizzleFrostA, FizzleShadowA, FizzleHolyA, FizzleNatureA. Each with a .wav extension.

edit3: You still get a quiet click, which I think is the uEscape sound; you could replace that as well if it bothers you.
Attached Files
File Type: wav FizzleHolyA.wav (482 Bytes, 194 views)

That's so incredibly tempting...

I don't think I could pull myself to do it though, losing my account would pretty much blow.

This worked great, thanks Kalman. I can't hear the quit click you're talking about, but who cares =P. Just making a FizzleShadowA and a FizzleFireA file made a huge difference in sound enjoyment for someone like me, who has to macro their trinkets to each and every spell to ever remember to use it /blush
