- Besides a threat meter, (possibly) a DPS meter, a boss warning addon, a UI frame, a raid frame, a buff indicator, a castbar, a cooldown timer, a proc notifier, a bag organizer, a loot organizer (atlasloot), are there another types of addons that might be useful?

Thank you.
For those items, it really depends on what you're planning to do and how comfortable you are with the base UI. My guild leader is a tankadin/healadin and generally uses the default UI with minor changes (raid frames NOT being one of them). I would say that if you're going to raid, a threat meter (such as Omen, or any of the numerous others) and a boss warning addon would be highly helpful. And with so many people using either BigWigs or Deadly Boss Mods, which can both be set to broadcast warnings, even they might be redundant.

Other addons that you might want to get are ones that your raid requires (oRA2?) A buff indicator is helpful if you watch your buffs (like for Thaddius/Loatheb/etc), but generally, the boss mods will let you know if you have the a particular one (or DBM does, which is the one I use). How extensive you get in this will also likely determine which addons you get. Personally, I use Simple Buff Bars, because I don't need the full configuration settings of EBB or Satrina. However, it also doesn't hide the default buff frame (which is used by my unitframe addon x-perl), as one warning.

Basically, I'd say browse Curse and WoWInterface to see if there are any addons you're interested in, but if your current layout of a UI works for you, then you really don't need to change it. You can also take the bits that don't work and find addons to tweak them out to work for you and just gradually change things, which might be a better idea in the long run. There are many addons out there that do various different things and the trick is to figure out what you want to have done, and then find which addons will do it.

Also, widely used does not mean it is the best one to do what you want (see my example of Simple Buff Bars rather than EBB or Satrina or Buffalo). Sometimes, its the little addons that make the biggest difference (like bag inventory, most people use ArkInventory or Bagnon or the like and I've fallen in love with CargBags with the Nivaya layout).

As for frequent updates, most addons tend to have updates around when a patch is released, to update the toc number internally at the very least. After that, there'll be bug fixes and the like in-between. But, if an addon hasn't been updated since last year, for example (DoubleWide being one that comes to mind), they might still work. I'd say check the comments out and see if there are recent comments of bugs or notices from the author of an update soon to be released, or in the case of DoubleWide, soon to be intetgrated into the default UI.

Alternative to trying out these huge lists that people are suggesting, try going to the compilation section of wowinterface and finding a UI that you like to mess around with. That's how I got interested and well-versed in AddOns, just messing around with other peoples' work.

Afternoon guys

In a video i watched recently (featured here) the hunter was using a enemy target cooldown tracker. You can find it at 6:30 positioned slightly above-right of his target unit frame. Can anyone point me in the direction or have any ideas of what this might be?

Cheers

Does anyone know what is the name of mod for announcing the use and the end of DK's tanking cooldowns to the party/raid? I would also like to ask the name of a similar mod for announcing the Shattering Throw. Thanks in advance.

Announce - Addons - Curse will do what you're looking for... you could also use the notification module of DoTimer if you happen to already use DoTimer to track cooldowns/buffs/dots/spells/etc.

Sorry to port a whole video, but I can't figure out the combat text of this spriest.

YouTube - AFTERLIFE VEZAX

It looks a lot like the in game damage text, but the font is a little better, and the effect is a flash instead of a scroll.

Probably Mik's Scrolling Battle Text or something similar.

I don't think it's mikscrollingbattletext unless you can dramatically alter the settings? Maybe I just didn't read enough into the configuration, but the last time I used mik, it looked a bit like this:

YouTube - WoW Addon Reviews - Comix and MikScrollingBattleText

I apologize for the guy being kind of dumb. I just picked the first video I could find that had the addon.

I reminds me of SCT-D using the setting to make it use the built in motions instead of its normal scrolling options. Its been ages since I've used SCT, though. I probably not since late BC.

My question: Does anyone know a decent replacement for BigBrother's [X spell broke Y player's spell] feature? I don't really need all the other functionality of BigBrother and am trying to slim down unneeded mods/features. I've always just used it to keep track of who breaks our CC.

@Drowningcat: Generally if you dig into the options for the three, Mik's Scrolling Battle Text, Scrolling Combat Text, and Parrot can all be made to look pretty much any way you'd like, with as many scrolling frames on the screen as you'd like.

@Jawbone: CCBreaker is useful for that. I don't think it's been updated for 3.1, but it may still work.
EDIT: I found this mod which is up to date, and may be just what you're looking for, Jawbone:
Afterlife Crowd Control : WoWInterface Downloads : Combat Mods

Thanks for bearing with my long questions, guys.

-So, is it correct that FuBar functions more like ACP (Addon Control Panel)? Due to many plugins available for FuBar, I was under impression that FuBar functions more like TitanPanel.

-I also found out that many people use both Eavesdrop and a combat text (MSBT, SCT, or Parrot). Aren't they kinda redundant or there is an Eavesdrop's function that I might miss that can't be covered by regular combat text addon?

-I have seen lots of screenshots where people change their addon text font appearance. Do I have to shuffle through the addon files and make some computer string changes, or there is a way to do it easier without endangering the addon itself (to be honest, my programming skills are kinda dismal).

-What is the purpose of addons Macaroon and ora2? I'm not really clear on this, seems like an addition to an action bar (for Macaroon) and unit frame (for ora2).

-Is there any addon that can give a general estimate on the lifetime of a boss? Probably useful to time long cooldowns and such.

ACP vs. FuBar/Titanpanel
ACP is used to switch addons on and off by reloading the ui. Eg switch off addon you dont need in a raid. Fubar and titanpanel are the same and store addon information/control in a small bar

Eavesdrop vs. Scrolling combat text:
Scrolling combat text is used to place message where you can see them best, but some people like to use it like a combat log

...

except, that you cant scroll back what happened. This is where Eavesdrop and other combat log addons come into play

Macaroon and oRA2
Macaroon is just a better macro interface, with direct key binding to macro and your macro can be longer

oRA2 is helping with raid leading:
- ready check display
- overview, who is not in the raid instance
- main tank targets
- easy setting and remove mt targets
- raid invite via key word
.. some stuff more

and for the last point:
TimeToDie - Addons - Curse

Fubar is like Titan Panel (or as I understand Titan Panel to be, since I don't use it). LDB displays are similar as well, where they add a bar to the top/bottom of the screen giving various bits of information like how much bag space is left, money, FPS, icons for other addons, etc. Addon control panel will allow you to enable/disable addons in-game rather than logging out and using the addons button on the character screen.

Not familiar with Eavesdrop, so skipping over the question.

Most addons that I've seen, have some way internal to the addon to change the font, usually through the options of the addon itself. Another option would be to use something like Fontain to change fonts as well. But I'd definitely encourage looking at the options window of the addons you're using.

From my understanding (again, I don't use either), Macaroon is an action bar addon, but with a fair amount of flexibility on what it can do. oRA2 appears to be more of a raid information deal, in the sense that you can have the tanks marked with it and get a different frame for that, which will show their targets as well. Helping DPS make sure that they're targeting the same mob that the tank is (and thus, not pulling aggro).

Yes, TimeToDie which gives a number telling you how many minutes/seconds until the mob you're targeting (or your focus) will die.

The best mod for enforcing a DPS rotation as retribution spec is /shit: Serious Help In Timing : WoWInterface Downloads : Paladin

To get it out of the way, there's also a /piss mod for managing the most effective tanking rotations for protection.

Well, you can set up a separate group of any buffs you'd like in either Elkano's Buff Bars, or Satrina's Buff Frames. Then there's also NeedToKnow for tracking buffs and cooldowns with bars, as well as Power Auras Classic, though PAC handles notifications through timers and custom textures / images rather than standard bars. ClassTimers also tracks class-specific buffs and cooldowns as bars. Also, TellMeWhen seems to be popular for alerting you to differing situations. For specifically tracking the cooldowns and durations of procs like weapon enchants, trinkets, etc., Procodile is great.

Hopefully some combination of the above will get you exactly what you're looking for.
