That's a nice way to sort it, problem is when you have 2 mages join and 2 hunters leave the raid you have to exit the game and edit the file again, no?
Why ? What kind of layout do you want exactly ? How do you think it should handle your example ?
Say, for the example I showed, this setup would've been fine. But then the next raid (or in the middle of the current raid) you have 1 warrior 1 mage 4 shamans 5 priests and 4 hunters, and it gets all messed up with 5 people on the first column and 12 people on the 2nd.
I'm looking for something that would let me arrange the raid in 2-3 columns that would be as close to the same height as possible (depending on the class makeup in the raid).
With CTRA I just dragged the classes in a way that fitted them in 2-3 columns, and moved it every time the raid composition changed.
On a side note, it would be even better if you can put "tanks" as their own class based on their assignment.
After reading through the thread, I've seen notices that some people are doing what I am attempting, which is to use Grid exclusively for any situation, but noone actually mentioned how they managed to hide the default Blizzard frames.
I'm attempting to minimize CPU load and as such, I am reluctant to rely on a second addon to fully suppres the default frames (such as PitBull and AGUF, which I've used before). Now I have no trouble in raids, since the Blizzard interface let's be hide the frames when in a raid, but I would likethem hidden when I'm in a party as well.
Is there an easy, if any, way of having Grid do this (I'm using IceHUD, so I am already hiding the player frame, just missing a way to remove the party frames), or some hitherto unknown/unmentioned mod that plugs in and does it?
Hide Party Macro:
/run for i=1,4 do local f=getglobal("PartyMemberFrame"..i);f:UnregisterAllEvents();f:Hide() end
Whenever I get into a group i run this macro. Not as elegant as having it always turned off.. but definately low CPU usage.
Before 2.3 I had added an outline on my center text in the gridframe.lua but for some reason after updating grid in 2.3 if I make any changes to the .lua grid wont work and even if I revert my changes it won't work. I end up having to re-download grid. Anyone know whats going on with this?
Looks like a pretty complete list of all the annoying debuffs Ive tried to add to my own copy of Grid, and would certainly be a plus for the less than savvy users. Only thing of note is you still need to attach it to a display (center icon / Raid Debuff for example)
Two interesting plugins for Grid (I should know, I coded them :P ) :
- GridDynamicZoneSwitch : allows you to specify a layout and/or profile to use when zoning into an instance / arena / battleground. Configuration is pretty self-explanatory.
- GridDynamicLayout : adds a new layout to Grid which dynamically moves people around into four groups (tanks / heals / melee / range) based on what stance / buffs / form they have active. http://www.wowace.com/wiki/GridDynamicLayout for a closer look.
You only have shamans fitting into the heal group?
[e] Oh nevermind missed the disclaimer you have the bottom.
For each group you can define a list of members that will be forced into those groups (currently only way to correctly detect enhancement / elemental / resto shams and ret pallies)
This is pretty nice, I've been wanting something like this for awhile now.

I have never been able to add odd debuffs to my Grid, I go into Auras, and add the new Debuff Spelling the name correctly with proper capitalization and everything, even setting the Color to a unique color and bumping the priority up to max. Nothing seems to work which is really annoying when I have to watch for Darkshadows Deadly Poison or Illidan's Barrage.
Does this addon package fix this? I update my grid every time I can with Ace Updater, yet nothing seems to work.

That just adds the debuff to watch for. You have to then tell Grid where to display that debuff. For example, I have my debuffs showing up in the center frame so I can see the debuff icon when a player is afflicted, so I go to Frame -> CenterIcon -> then check the debuff(s) I want to show up.
I've tried the GridStatusRaidDebuff module when it was first released as an attachment on the wowace.com forums, but never got it to work :/ Has anyone gotten it to work?

Just out of curiosity, since (I don't think) the frames can be dynamically changed during combat, how does it handle feral druids, mainly bear tanks, who are in caster form before the pull, but switch either right before/after the pull into bear form for the rage from furor? Is there any way to have them placed in the correct group aside from forcimg them into a particular group?

I installed GridStatusRaidDebuff about 2 weeks ago, set it to display on the center icon and it's working flawlessly for me. I can't imagine using Grid without this module now.

You're right, you cannot handle changes in fight, however in the specific case of druids beginning in caster form and switching to bear there is an option (called Statistical Analysis) that detects the probable spec (feral / balance / resto) of the druid. Feral druids in caster/bear form are stuck in the tank group and cat druids in melee DPS. I handle similarly shadowpriests and prot pals.
Can you make timers (aka time left on LB/MOTW/Rejuv/Renew) show up over/around the corner & side icons or is that feature available over center icons only? The actual NECB/Quartz mod cast bars take up too much screenspace for my liking. I think I have a HoT timer addon for Grid but I also think it doesn't do timers over corner icons or I haven't been able to figure out how to make it do that. I want to eliminate the stack of cast bars altogether if possible.
I added a color2/color3 option to GridStatusHots to time my Swiftmends better. Right now it's set to go to color2 when there's 4 seconds left, and color3 when there's 2 seconds left. I added it to Rejuv, Regrowth, and Renew, not to Lifebloom because I use GridStatusLifebloom for that.
However, some caveats. If you look at the code for GridStatusHots, you can see that the logic it uses to determine when to remove a hot indicator is to check for the duration of the spell and if the target still has the buff. So in a situation like this:
1. I cast Rejuv on a target
2. Another druid casts Rejuv on that target one second later
3. The other druid Swiftmends the target
4. At this point my GridStatusHots timer will be wrong because it doesn't know that my Rejuv got Swiftmended. The other druid's Rejuv is there, so the indicator won't go away.
Still, could be useful if there aren't many other resto druids in your raids.
I've been using grid for the last year and i think it's probably the best thing since slice bread. The thing is, i changed my monitor last week and i need to move my grid aroudn and i'd like to have into only on column ( much like the old perfectraid )
does anybody know if there is a way to track if ppl are within some set range of other ppl for the purpose of making life a little easier for a CH-spamming shammy as myself

The API is not available to check range from a relative point. It isn't even fully there to check range from yourself, you can just get a range where you are depending on what abilities are available and unavailable.
