I guess no one here liked it (or made full use of it?) but the logitech mx1000 appears to have the most hardware switches (i.e. buttons) at twelve. I haven't found any mice with the same number of switches, and I have been able to remap all of them via the setpoint software that logitech includes. Even their newer mouse, the revolution, isn't as good as the old mx1000; the number of switches appears to be similar (or +1 for a total of thirteen) but they've now moved "too many" of those switches (5) to the thumb area. The extra switch is tempting, and I may end up going with the new one out of desperation.

The other thing I can say for the mx1000 is how sturdy it is. I've thrown it into the wall behind my desk a few times and it hasn't lost any functionality. In fact, one beef I had with its charging stand has seemingly been improved by the physical abuse to the mouse. Prior to the first collision, the mouse fit "too snugly" into the charging stand and was sliding down beyond the range of the electrical contact points; once requiring me to place it VERY gently into the stand. Now, since the first collision, it fits perfectly. I can drop it in the stand and it starts charging right away.

I bought the thing about 3.5 years ago and it's still going strong, still holds a charge for 2-3 days as well.

That's pretty good to hear, how often do you use your computer though? The reason I haven't changed mouse is simply due to being able to swap between 2 batteries so easily as previous mice I've used seem to burn rechargable batteries out quite quickly (the one before the G7 was the MX710).

I'm curious where the two last ones are?

Looking at the MX Revolution at the moment. It looks really great to be honest. I can find 13 buttons, all of which are easily clicked. The thumb wheel could be used to rapidly target enemies instead of spamming TAB/Shift+TAB. Or if you're already using Nostromo's wheel for that you can use it to spam spells (perhaps when stun locked?). A few more buttons here and there wouldn't hurt - though it has lots compared to other mice.

If you use a logitech mouse, consider UberOptions as it gives a ton of extra functions to SetPoint. It also lets the forward/back buttons work in FF, which is great.
I have my tilt left/right buttons bound to keys with this, thus giving a simple MX400 9 buttons.
I prefer wired mice due to the lack of need to change batteries.

How do you guys manage to bind all the mouse buttons to in-game functions using SetPoint? I have the MX1000 and installed SetPoint after reading this thread, but am still unable to bind them in-game (e.g. left/right scroll doesn't get recognized). Is there something I am missing?

Wheel forward and wheel back are (or used to be) switches. Plain old generic windows messages. You cannot remap the wheel forward/back in setpoint, that's true, but you CAN bind stuff in-game to those. Our awesome feraltank doesn't use the wheel for camera zoom, but rather some complicated target changing macro he made. I think forward goes through /targetenemy and back goes through /targetnearestenemy

Anyway, that's 12 switches.

I work 40 hours a week using that mouse. I raid about 16-20 hours a week using that mouse. My wife and I also play for fun when not raiding, some uncounted hours per week.

I don't need the mx1000 for work, however. So, while I prefer it, whenever the charge appears to be "not enough for work + tonight's raid" that's when I charge it. Else, I charge it overnight when its indicator has 1 power LED remaining green. Maybe once a month, if even that often, I'll get unlucky and its indicator will go to the "bottom red LED of impending betrayal" and for that I'll get by with the corded backup mouse.

Yes. The logitech functions may not send a signal to the game. Use up the generic mouse button signals first, then look for keys on your keyboard that you're not using and map to those via setpoint's 'keystroke assignment' choice. For some examples:

- wheel tilt left on mine is bound to shift (for actionbar modifiers)
- wheel tilt right on mine is bound to ctrl (for actionbar modifiers)
- cruise up is bound to [
- cruise down is bound to ]
- forward is bound to m4
- back is bound to m5 (toggle autorun)
- app switch is bound to "middle button" (push to talk)

[, ], and M4 are bound to a faded actionbar, which is visible on mouse-over, so that I can drop macros in there.

[ is a macro to /assist [target=focus]
] is a macro to /clearfocus and /focus target
M4 is a nifty pet-toggle macro that a friend of mine has made

I think it's mainly due to overuse of that button rather than the mouse being especially crappy as honestly it's the button I hold down constantly whilst moving and click to attack with.

Good mouse, but I'm really looking for another and there don't seem to be any good wireless alternatives (I like the freedom of wireless mice).
Good point really. I guess most games don't make such an excessive use of the right mouse button as WoW does.

I'm also in love with the MX1000, but now I'm starting to worry about the battery. From a full green, I can now reliably get to the battery critical warning in a single 8-hour gaming session. It's a shame that the battery does not appear to be replaceable and this model's not available any more.

There's usually a decent number of unopened MX1000s on ebay. Even though mine is holding up very well, I ended up grabbing a backup one for about $20 from ebay a while ago just in case it dies before someone makes a comparable mouse.

Especially in response to the Mac question, I've used the MX510 and MX518 on both my Macbook and my XP box at home and nothing I've tried has allowed me to remap the MX518 keys on the Mac. Logitech doesn't offer Mac drivers for it, some 3rd party app that said it would work didn't, and the MX510 drivers for Max don't recognize the MX518. So I've got the MX510 on the Mac and MX518 on the XP box and both are happy now.

Have you tried ControllerMate? It's ridiculously flexible, and they even have a WoW-specific support board. The author is very helpful about getting things working.

I just hopped on ebay and bought one of these babies for 20$ (9$ priority shipping from CA to PA). Since I sit at a distance that some might call close to my monitor, and since I click on UI action bars, looking at what I'm clicking on the bottom of the screen takes my eyes too far away from the rest of my field of view. I could move the bars up but that obscures too much for my tastes so I thought I'd graduate from mouse dependency and try out one of the cheaper devices.

The Fang is complete crap. I tried it and could never get used to it and the software was flaky as a French pastry.

Get an N52. Best thing out that as far as low cost HID controllers.

Could you give me any details as to what kind of problems you had with it? I'm just asking out of curiosity since I already paid for the Fang. Assuming the software functions decently for me it can't possibly be any worse than clicking my UI action bars. I'm just getting sick of missing the ability buttons and dropping my target by accident and clicking 3-4 times before I realize I'm not attacking anything. It's getting more important now that I am working on my tanking skills as my 70 warrior.

Overall I found the software lacking as far as customizing the layout and I had to plug/unplug the device several times for it to function correctly. For whatever reason, the Fang would just go bye bye.

On top of that, the feel is pretty cheap compared to the N52.

Finally, I have very small hands and even with my little fingers some of the keys didn't have the separation I would have liked. Hitting the number keys was never comfortable.

I'd give it a 9/10 in the "Looks good on paper" category and a 2/10 in the "It works" category.

My only issue with fang is that there's no replacement for the N52's d-pad at the thumb. That n52 has an 8-way rocker switch right where the nintendo generation's console gamer expects it; you just don't see on any of the other "gaming" devices.

I picked up fang when I considered a switch to EQ2 and if I could still FIND the thing on my desk I expect would regret the purchase. I have otherwise totally forgotten about it as a cheap (thankfully) and flimsy (sadly) piece of garbage from that ideazon place that keeps terrible gamers turning with their keyboards.

I tried the Fang but I eventually went back to my keyboard as it was just too much to be getting used to when I use a keyboard for 8 hours at work, then having to switch between the Fang and a keyboard at home.

Hmm looks like there's a new n52 called the n52te;

Belkin n52te

edit;

this looks to be a far better page for the damn thing:

Belkin : n52te

I have to say, it looks far cooler then the "old" n52. I'm easily suckered in by looks. Maybe I should give one of these things a try whenever it shows up in local stores.

SETPOINT Alternative

I have a MX1000 mouse at work.

I have trashed out Setpoint because it simply sucks.

Instead i use Uberoption which provide ALL settings you can imagine for most logitec mouses

uberOptions Wiki | Main / uberOptions

Have fun.

This appears to be user error / lack of user education. At least some of the statements made on that website are false.

- Setpoint can change the wheel tilt
- The forward/back buttons on my mx1000 work just fine in firefox, MSIE, and in-game
- I stopped reading the propaganda because those first two arguments were out of date at best

I'm guessing those were extremely old versions of setpoint. I can't say that it "doesn't suck" but I can say that the first two important-looking reasons for not using it are very much false.

- I have my wheel tilt bound to shift & ctrl, definitely NOT the default
- I have my forward/back buttons bound to m4 and m5, again NOT the default, and they work great in all apps

I'd say logitech ships some poor default choices, sure. So does WoW and we still use that, right?

Actually, I think the most is still the Sandio Typhoon with 22 individual switches plus a plethora of combinations.

Sandio Technology Products - 3D Input Technology and Makers of the 3D Mouse

It takes very little getting used to, but as a warlock with the need for 30+ keybindings plus the desire to keep at least 1 hand on the keyboard for typing a billion replies a day, it's pretty amazing.

nah, I tried USB Overdrive and it didn't work despite saying they added support for the MX518. Maybe you had to buy the full version for 518 support, I dunno. I'm content now though, as my XP desktop is what I use for WoW and the laptop is mostly for work, but WoW on the road. So it makes some sense that the box I use for WoW more has the better mouse.

Also, while I'm posting, I suggest mapping the top mouse buttons to F-keys rather than some rare modifier/key usage. That way, you can use all the modifier combinations with the mouse buttons and never have to think about the top mouse buttons not being real buttons.
