Efficient distribution of addons on patch day

So, the release of 2.4 is nearly upon us. The effect of the release of 2.3 was noticable in that it caused massive load on all of the big name players in the addon game (curse, wowinterface, wowace), generally making it extremely difficult or impossible to download updated addons for several days after release. This issue is made even worse for those of us in Europe as we can't update before the rush unless we're willing to miss a night's play or mess around with backups of the interface folder.

While 2.4 brings few changes to the addon programming model, those changes there are affect some of the most commonly used addons around (Omen, KTM, various damage meters, SCL, SCT, etc). Having updated threat meters, especially, could be the difference between killing Brutallus or not.

Given the likelihood of further issues with the common download sites again for this patch, and the obvious desire of guilds to enter Sunwell and down bosses for world/server firsts, what plans do people have to ensure that they and their guild aren't hampered by lack of updated addons?

Is there a gap in the market for a P2P powered download site? Should addon authors be making their 2.4 versions available for download now?

I usually download most of the popular updates before patch day. Frequently, you can find "beta" or "PTR" versions of addons while the PTR is up, and those are what you want on patch day until the normal sites get past the rush.

WoWInterface 2.4 Survival Guide

WoWInterface is actually running a 2.4 compatible page right now so that you can snag at least some of the addons prior to patch day.

I would suggest getting on the test server and putting your WTF, and Interface files in the WoWTest folder and trying your current UI on the test server. If everything functions properly, then you know you'll at least have a functioning UI. If something isn't working now would probably be a good time to look for a permenant or temporary replacement to the incompatable mod or mods your currently running.

Up till now with regular updating and stuff I have never gotten into big trouble with any patch.

Most of my mods are up to date now, and the servers aren't even up. Missing: ItemSync, ItemRack, ArkInventory, DBM.

Thankfully wowinterface and wowace were both up, unlike some previous patches. :)

I just ran WoWAceUpdater on my addons. While it was a bit sluggish, it got through no problem. I don't have a ton of addons though, and really the only two that didn't work on the PTR were (obviously) Omen and Assessment. There's a 2.4 version of Omen up, hopefully a new version of Assessment soon.

Assessment (this morning) still used Threat-1.0. I didn't get to test it, but if you want both versions of the Threat library running, it should still work.

I've run WAU twice since the patch, and had no issues. Great job by the WoWAce folks!

I did test the latest Assessment on my raid last night. It is completely non-functional (for me at least).

I am not sure if this is necessarily the best thread for this question, but I could not locate a better thread and I did not feel that the question warranted it's own thread. That being said, I was curious if anyone else was having issues with CT View Port post 2.4. Mine will work fine until I alt tab, and then I get a whole mess of graphics into the box that should have been renderd out. I can reset the view port box, however it will lock in the background graphics into the rendered area until I restart the game.

I really enjoyed using this mod in my UI, but I enjoy alt-tabbing and coming back to a clean screen more. Any suggestions for why this might be happening (or if there is a better alternative mod to use) would be greatly appreciated!

You are right, its rather a question for "What's that mod" where you could ask for an alternative and the answer would be Aperture over at World of Warcraft Addons - WowAce.com .

Actually, I have the same issue with Aperture as Earen does with CT Viewport. I'm guessing that the issue is not specific to a particular viewport mod, but perhaps something changed with how the game renders that sort of "blank" space after an alt-tab?
