I finally broke down and moved my character and target frames down low on the screen. It does keep my attention central and frees up a good deal of screen space. So I came up with a nice new KG panels backdrop to house all my goodies. Enjoy.
After an enjoyable read of this thread and The Rogue UI: Your Silent Partner
thread I decided to try my hand at redesigning my rogue's interface in such a
way as to enhance my situational awareness.
As an experiement I removed the usual health/mana unit frames in favor of a
HUD and Grid. So far it seems to be working well. Here it is at its craziest, in
a 25 man raid:
The addons are:
Bartender4 - I love this addon for keybinds. Two button bars make up
the 24 button bank in the bottom middle. I have faded out button bars on the far
right for things like food, poisons, mounts, and professions. I use a tiny 3 button
bar for simple status information (in this case: auto attacking, a trinket CD, and
Cellular - I prefer WIM aesthetically and functionally, but it has been
buggy in my experience. Cellular has worked perfectly.
IceHUD - I used to use the slices, which I think look better, but in hectic
raid situations I had a harder time finding them than the fatter curves.
On the far left is my focus.
On the immediate left are my target bars, which are aggro level, mana
(Rotface has none, so it's off), and health.
Combo points are located near the bottom of the HUD.
The target info has been dropped to just above the button bars. I made my
debuffs larger than other debuffs on the target info.
The range indicator is in its default position, just above the avatar (it's
somewhat obscurred in this shot).
To the right are the following bars: my health, my energy, a Hunger for
Blood timer, a Slice and Dice timer, my cast bar, and my mirror bar (which is not
on in the shot).
To the far right, sized the same as the focus bars, are my pet's health bar,
and my pet's mana bar (both of which are off in this shot).
MoveAnything - I used this to relocate my Objectives tab and the
durability doll. This is also how I turned off unit frames. Sometimes, I get
a bonus "feature" where a Blizzard unit frame appears every once in awhile,
then disappears when I retarget.
Mutilate - This mod cured my keyboard spamming. It pops up a
big icon when it's time for me to attack. It's only for Mutilate rogues. This
addon doesn't seem to track mangle properly, as it will request a bleed
even if the druid bleed is active on the target. It doesn't turn itself off
if you switch to a non-Hunger for Blood spec either (though I modified
mine so that it does).
Quartz - I only use this for the target cast bar. I turned off the
rest of the Quartz bars. The IceHUD target cast bar works, but I like having
a fat horizontal bar just under my avatar's feet to get my attention for kicks.
Satrina Buff Frames - I made my debuffs larger than the buffs
since I need to check them in combat. Often the frames don't update their
icons when I swap poisoned weapons.
Sunn - Viewport Art - I use this in viewport mode so that my bottom
panel obscures nothing.
TipTac - I anchor this near the lower right corner.
DBM - I played with DXE a bit, but found it to be a bit buggy.
Features that I'd turn off would still appear and the timers were often off.
DBM has been reliable for me.

Been a while since I showed off. Here is my current set up. I'm mostly happy with it, minus the buff frame. I try to keep all my addons under 1mb when not in combat, so I'm having a hard time finding a buff add on that I like, and looks right with my setup.
Here in 25 on my shammy;
And it works pretty well for tanking on my DK as well;
Bartender - Obiously, that's my action bars.
Grid - Point is that when I get a group together, it'll fill out all of that empty room. Haven't tested it yet, so I'm probably gonna have to configure the size.
Clique - Let's me click-heal, using the grid-frames.
Carbonite - You noticed the amazing minimap? Yes, that's Carbonite, my map, quest log, friends list and a few other things.
Chatter - haven't really looked that much into it.. I like to be able to see class colors in my chat.
Bagnon - you can't see it in the picture, but it turns all my bags into one.
Recount+Omen - tells me all that number-related stuff.
That was all the important stuff, I think - I got a few more installed, but that's stuff like AtlasLoot and Gatherer, it doesn't really show up on your screen unless you ask it to.
Get a bar for those icons! They're annoying.
Maybe some buff frames.
Thinking of getting some unit-frame addon, but I don't really know...
EDIT: Need a moveable cast bar as well.. If you know something nice and simple, please let me know
Comments and suggestions, please!
EDIT: Just thought I'd show you the Carbonite map in all it's glory here it is:
This is my UI how it looked a few days ago, before looking through these forums (well, the screenshot in question is a few weeks old but still relatively accurate).
The only visible change in addons is that I was still using kgPanels back then.
After looking through some threads here, and seeing what other people had, I realized how cramped my UI had become. I re-did most of it, going for a more transparant look, the result of which can be seen below.
Main addons used:
- Fubar. The top panel is fubar, with some LBD stuff in it too.
- IceHud. On the left side are, from left to right: target cast/own breath (overlaps), target health, own health, pet health/own cast (overlaps). On the right side, from left to right: pet energy, own energy, target energy, threat.
- MSBT. The text in the center of the screen. Basic setup, left is incoming, right is outgoing, etc.
- Need to know. This is positioned right below the runes, and shows the most important buffs/debuffs I should have up at all time. Only been using this for a few days, but I quite like it.
- Pitbull. Right side of minimap is player/target/targettarget, left side is pet/pettarget.
- Bartender. I guess you all know about this. There is a small (3x4) bar on the bottom right, which is only show in combat/when targeting a hostile target. There actually are two more 3x4 bars above that one, which are only shown when hovering over them, and which contain some lesser used stuff.
- SexyCooldowns. This consists of three bars, right above the visible bartender bar. The rightmost one tracks the active cooldowns, the center one the buffs/debuffs on me, and the left one the buffs/debuffs on my target.
- QuestGuru. The tracker in the top left, which is hidden in combat. I don't actually like this that much, but it's the best I've found so far. It ain't too bad I suppose, it works.
It's still very much a work in progress... but then again, it'll probably always be.
What I've aimed for with this UI is to group to position relevant information centrally, for example all damage dealing information is shown at the bottom (including specific buffs and debuffs), while not displaying any irrelevant information such as ability action buttons which do not have a cooldown. The player's health and target's health are positioned slightly further out, while less important information (raid status, less important buffs and debuffs) is found in the top corners of the screen. I've tried to keep screen real estate a high priority.
