Mod Authoring References

Hello all,

I've recently begun to look at creating my own addons, but I'm having a hard time finding good information. I've looked through Blizzard's UI Toolkit, perused wowwiki.com, and Google'd my heart out. WoW's UI section has a sticky that tries to serve the same purpose that I'm trying to get at, but sadly it was of no help at all.

I'm having a hard time finding a good place that will serve as a starting point for my WoW authoring adventure. I notice that quite a few addon authors post here, and I'd like to appeal to you for some help.

Where did you get your start? What sites would you recommend to a noob addon designer? Let's assume that the designer has a solid grasp on programming techniques, but may or may not be proficient with the LUA language.

Thanks in advance.

You might find some help with AddOn Studio for World of Warcraft - Home

It will teach you how to make a basic mod, and do some stuff automatically, like creating xml for how the mod should look etc.

Then you could try look through some of the WoW API on wowwiki.com to get started.

It seems like their download is broken atm. Oh well. I'll check into it later.

edit: Got it downloaded and installed, definitely a good tool for a new designer.

It's pretty simple : Read other's code.

Start with blizzard code. Take your time, do not panic if you don't get it at first. It's going to make sense. You'll probably have an easier time if you start with Blizzard's Addons, like Blizzard_ItemSocketingUI.

Blizzard UI code may not be the best, but it's straightforward to read and easy to understand.

Jerry has the right idea. Your best bet is to read and learn from others' code. You can also take advantage of things like the #wowace and #wowuidev channels on irc.freenode.net to get guidance.

wowwiki also has a fairly comprihensive list of the wow api. Although not all of it is documented, most of it is, and the calls that aren't are typically fairly easy to figure out based on their name.
