It's because people are so cocky. They're proud they've bought gold because it makes them feel like part of the Naxfarming pals where you need pots every raid to survive.
I can see why someone would want to. I mean, economically it's worth it if you have a job, but most of the people I know who have bought gold are ignorant selfish retards who can't see far enough to realize that gold buying fucks up WoW economy and indirectly supports hacking.
