I think the bold part is your problem. Install an ignite monitoring add-on like combustion helper and use combustion when you get a big ignite, a stacking one if you can.
For stacking ignite you have to critically hit with a second crit before first ignite tick, eg. a critical fireball followed by a critical instant pyro.
Optimal use of combustion is a consistent part of fire dps.
