Just my two cents.
Players want to obtain things that other players cannot easily obtain.
Players want to have things that others players do not have.
Having something unique (such as an old epic un-armored tiger mount from wayyyyy back in the day) is what players love.
When people ask me where I got an "uber1337item" it makes me feel "1337er" (as lame as that sounds). L O L
