It seems the purpose of the Kalec fight is to kill the Dread Lord fighting his half elf form before the Dread Lord kills him and not Kalec's dragon form. When the Dread Lord dies hes probably released and then ends up aiding you.

from the screens i see, it looks like you beat Kalec(dragon) to submission maybe?
