i agree, i rarely find myself saying 'thank god beacon was there.' i find that it's usefulness increases as the number of healers decreases. but going into a new instance, we'll be bringing more healers then necessary at first to overcome the handicap that is bad people. (read: get out of the fire)
at any rate, i don't think beacon on yourself will be more worthwhile then beacon on an ot. The lack of SA is annoying, but why should the other healers suddenly neglect to do their job of healing you? Paladins will still be MT healing, let the other guys hit you with a heal, as they should be. if we're worried about our own hp we can always shock ourselves, leaving only a minor gap in MT healing.
and personally i'm not worried about a 1sec gap in mt healing. i don't remember an encounter where the tank was taking so much damage that a 1 second gap in chained holy lights would let him die. i find that blizz generally follows the rule of '1/2 targets taking huge damage or everyone taking minor damage.'
