I think in the 15/51/5 vs 18/51/2 fight it may be best to err on the side of the extra energy from 5/5 relentless strikes. The difference up and down looks to be a quite negligible amount of damage but, having extra energy for 'oh crap' moments could be the difference between 6k dps and a rough uphill battle to restart your cycle because you had to kick/dismantle/blind/vanish+cs something. Also I prefer the extra energy in more mobile fights. The tighter you have to keep your rotation to stay at 5.7-6.2k dps and the less breathing room you give yourself, the more likely you'll get screwed on your dps if something random happens.

I defiantly agree in favoring a spec/rotation that has more flexibility/forgiveness for the same reasons you've mentioned, though combat is a bit different in that if your SnD falls off you don't have to "waste" a damage finisher to put it back up as you would with mutilate, you have to put points into SnD on a regular basis. Additionally, you have AR and Killing Spree (to pool energy for 2.5seconds) to smooth out some of those slip ups and keep a rotation in order.
