You can most definitely run the spreadsheet in Office 2004, which you can have concurrently installed with Office 2008.

I don't plan on dropping $100 for '08 just to run a spreadsheet.

*EDIT* Just tried it on my friend's Macbook, "Visual Based Macros Are Incompatible With 2008 Version of Microsoft Excel"
