They can put up the debuff during the pull and keep it up without any bigger problems. It is a hassle, but not nearly as problematic as for a Destruction warlock.
And no, only Imp. Scorch and Imp. Shadow Bolt share the same type of debuff.

One good idea that I read was, assuming you have two mages in the raid, they both do Scorch 1x at the same time, repeat, then one of them does the final one to put up all 5 stacks, and then one maintains it. This way, there is no burden on a single Mage to put all 5 up.
I have been having the same discussion with the Mage CL in our guild, but I'm having a hard time convincing him. Has anyone done the math to prove that a Mage doing it is a smaller DPS loss than a Warlock re-spec'ing to Affliction?
