Arena Point gain nerfs official
http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/th...eNo=2&sid=1#33
Arena point gain is intentionally different, and this is in-fact not a bug. A typical team will see a small change in their points, but players with very high or very low ratings will see a much larger change. Below is the new formula.
If rating<=1500 then
Points=0.38*rating-194
(note: this calculation can go negative, but will be floored at 0)
If rating>1500 then
Points=1426.79/(1+918.836*Power(2.71828, -0.00386405*rating))
|
Later in the thread someone does some math for some usefull examples.
Here is some samples of what these changes did:
rating =1500
>> 0.38*rating-194
ans =376

Slightly annoyed since this cost me about 260 points this week but maybe this is for the best in the long run.

On the subject at hand, while it is fairly annoying to see the calculations changes without a warning. I do like the new changes as I have always felt that
5v5 sub 1500 teams where generating to many points for the amount of 'effort' required.

It's scientific notation: e+003 means *10^3.

So midrange teams will see an increase in point gains?

Ans (answer) is the number of points you get with the new system. e+003 is simply moving the decimal point over 3 spaces to get the real point value (1,015.8 arena points).
The 2nd example is 1,202.2 arena points. I don't know if these values are rounded up or down though.

The meat...
1750 = +12
1300 = -67
2200 = -204
Average teams see a tiny boost, poor teams lose enough to matter, and the top tier teams get bent over. Guessing about 90% of the teams are going to lose some points to this.

This seems like a fairly necessary (if under-done) change given the approach of season 2. Bliz is in a really tough spot with season 2 itemization and pricing. Currently they can either:
a) simply upgrade the current gear. This doesn't hurt anyone, but it can upset the pve versus pvp balance as well as letting highly rated teams get their pvp teir 5-6 on day 1 (5k points goes a long way).
b) upgrade the gear, but increase the price for the new gear. This slows the top teams acquisition of gear, but really hurts the mid-level contenders.
c) require season 1 gear to purchase season 2 gear. This really hurts new characters and cements the top teams in place, which defeats the purpose of comeptative pvp.
Given this change I'm feeling like bliz will go with option 1 (which has the fewest drawbacks) while at the same time scaling back the points gained from the high and low ratings. This allows for progression through the pvp ranks while preventing the top teams from becoming unreachable as well as punishing arena point farmers looking for "easy mode" epics.

d) Increase points gained in season 2 and make s2 gear cost more than s1 gear accordingly. Letting people who want to gear up quickly have an option and making point hoarding less desirable.

I'll probably set up a better one when I'm back from work, but this should give a quick idea of what the changes will be like.

I saw it coming. I've got 5 pieces of Felweave, 2 pieces of Dreadweave, the staff, the wand and I still have 3850 points 2 weeks before the end of the season.

Uh yeah, when you've got teams discussing buying alt accounts (of the same class of their main) to play in their top ranked teams to then flip the accounts, now with 5/5 gladiator and netherdrakes.... it's safe to say the old system has jumped the shark.

its obvious the formula change was implemented such that:
a) low ranked teams obviously just playing their minimum 10 games cant get "free" epics quite as easily. (which alot of people seem to have been complaining about during the whole season)
b) high ranked teams dont have such a huge gear advantage (due to the substantialy larger point intake). Probably to allow new teams on a equal or close to skill level to be competitive regardless of gear.

I'm somewhat...disappointed in Blizzard. The point nerf I can understand that...but the nerf to 3v3 and 2v2 was huge. essentially making 5v5 the only competitive one.
A mid-tier (depending on your battlegroup) 5v5 team hovering around 2000 rating (almost anyone who can play will be able to achieve this) will recieve 10xx points.
A top-tier team 3v3 at 2400'ish rating will recieve 10xx points.
Essentially it's a real bitch-slap to all the top 2v2/3v3 teams out there.
I'd understand if the reasoning would be to stop everyone running around with gladiator weapons obtained in 2-3 weeks... but to nerf top and lower tier, and buff mid-tier.
It will only serve to make the arena weapons more common.
I fail to see where this line of thought is heading towards.
I think we'll see a lot of QQ and whine from 3v3 and 2v2 teams in the coming weeks.
Time will tell if they'll change anything though.

False.
A more true statement would be that this rating change will minimally affect *most* teams (as defined statistically, vs. anecdotally who you may play with). The change will most grievously affect teams like Bibdy's - who pretty much already has every piece of gear the vendor will sell him, and doesn't have to strategically buy anything per se.
What I'd like to see is a number count (or percentage) of the teams falling between 1600 and 1900 (or whatever range it is who will receive a postive adjustment from this change).

I have plenty of people in my new guild that are amazed that I'm on a 2k 5v5 team.
There are plenty of people that are bad at pvp who will never see 2000. It is almost mathematically impossible for most teams to be 2000. For every 2k team you need another 1k to have given them the points. Even then you would still have only half of the teams with 2k.
The point change will certainly slow down people getting their items in season 2 which is probably for the best. Hopefully the season 2 gear isn't more expensive and this is the only balance they do.

The arena system isn't really balanced like that darkmantle because if you have a crap team and you lose a bunch of games and go down to 1300 or 1500 you can just disband and reform and be back at 1500.

I suppose the idea behind this is there isn't really a differance between a 2250 rated team and a 2450~ rated team, with kind of rings true as I've been on both ends of the spectrum many times and it is quite simple to go from one to the other.
