I don't mean World of Warcraft, I mean WOW. A guildy suggested reading through these forums and I have been overwhelmed by the sheer volume of data/knowledge I have been reading. I can't even parse all the information without my brain telling me to take a break and get some caffeine.
I have a few questions regarding my current PvP scenario. I'm on a 2v2 with a destruction Lock. I'm a 41/20 MM my armory profile. I've done a lot of reading, but I'm not completely sold on the BM spec, mostly because I really love the MM spec. I was wondering what you would suggest changing in my setup (gear/spec)?
Are there any mods you recommend for arena play? The only PvP mod I use now is Arena Live Frames, which I'm not crazy about. For anyone who doesn't know, ALF lets you know the makeup of the other team, providing that there are no stealth players.
I am a skinner/lw, and I have the Ebon Netherscale patterns . I actually just replaced the belt yesterday with the vindicators.
I run with a resto shaman myself. We broke into 1700 last night and are currently on a roll towards 1850, we made it to about 1780 before we came up with loss after loss. Three of our 5 losses have been due to pet gettin killed and the other 2 were against shadowp/rogue. My pet dying seems to be the issue though. Both of us are trying to keep a good eye on it (scorpid of course), but time and time again its gettin killed off by wars/dots. So it got me thinking...
What it boils down to is not having enough notice when they are bursting my pet. Both of our attention is focused on staying LoS when needed and for me at least getting my CC goin while I drain. So I had two thoughts really.
First:
Mods for pet health/alerts
Second:
Keep pet uncalled until healer goes for mana
Third:
Switch spec to 7/41/13
Any feedback from hunters who've worked with shammy healers would be extra appreciated.
I don't know of an alert mod specifically, but you can use pitbull or xperl (take your pick) to make pet frames as obvious as party members.
Second:
Keep pet uncalled until healer goes for mana
Good healers will go for mana as soon as they're below 100%. Instead of waiting to get low and drinking, they'll just constantly top themselves up. You probably do have to keep the pet on them all the time.
Third:
Switch spec to 7/41/13
Yeah, improved revive pet is pretty much necessary for 2s. If a full-rage warrior wants to kill your pet, he can.
I don't know of an alert mod specifically, but you can use pitbull or xperl (take your pick) to make pet frames as obvious as party members.
That's really too bad; I would love to have an alert that warns me when my pet's HP goes below a certain threshold (like SCT does for the player).
As for pet spec, for 2s I go for max NR and SR and fill the rest with armor (plus the basics). Mitigation and counteracting CC is king. FR is unnecessary since I rarely have difficulty keeping the mage in combat, with or without a pet.
I strongly disagree with this. I am a hunter in a 2v2 hunter/druid team rated 2050 currently, and i find the above statement for to be true for 3's, but not at all for 2's. I find armor is key to have in 2's, much more so than all resists excluding shadow. Because it's 2's and because of my setup, any team with a mage we are basically going to beat, making most resists useless. On the other hand, druids and warlocks often cause problems. Armor is a key stat for your pet to have against a druid, because the druid will often run off, go into bear form, and try to kill your pet. You can't pull the pet off too early or the druid will be able to drink. An extra 25% reduced dmg is huge and in many casses will be the difference in your pet living or not before he can be healed. Other than the basics, for 2's i spec my scorpid with full points in armor and all remaining in SR.
Shadow Resist is to protect your pet from fear/dots, Nature Resist is to protect your pet from Hibernation/Roots. Overall, the training points required to train resistances for your pet are much more efficient than the training points required to train armor for your pet. I believe the most armor you can train is 1000, which is nowhere near 25% damage reduction; resists are simply a better way to spend training points.
Edit: A druid should never be able to kill your pet in bear form. Mend pet alone should be able to keep your pet up through whatever damage a healing druid in bear is putting out; a druid casting wrath/moonfire to try to kill the pet is a more likely scenario.
i need some help with my hunter/druid 2s team. right now, my druid has fully gemmed/etc gear with only one gap in it, his green oshu gun relic, but hell replace that soon enough. me, i have a full pvp set with 2 pieces of s3 and the s2 shoulders, i use kara arrows and the 83.3 dps bow from prince. (i know its bad, i plan on replacing it soon enough). the other day, we had the toughest time with rogue/disc priest team for some reason. we played them 2 or 3 times, cant remember, and fought in the nagrand arena. naturally, i figured just let the druid cc the rogue, go bearform for mana burns and its a cakewalk, but for some reason, i would drain the disc priest down to nothing, assisting the druid with scatter shots and freezing traps chained, but the rogue wouldnt get off my partner. the disc priest was at only at max 500 mana after the initial drain, and i kept following it up with more drains, but it seemed like she would just run away and LOS me while regenning her mana(it was coming back like crazy), and i just assume she would dispel all the immobilizes on the rogue, because even though he was shadowstep specced, he would stay on my druid the whole fight, and he could never get away. he must have specced for resist poison dispel, but we lost every match to this team, and i was too worried about the priest drinking to switch to the rogue(scared he would sprint and LOS, vanish, blind, etc.(priest was burning when she got the chance, but in most cases it wasnt really a problem)
can anyone please give me tips or a new way to beat this setup? my partner also told me every time he would cc the rogue it would bring him out of combat and he would catch up to the druid in stealth (wtf) and put even more hurt on him. yes, he said he did spam abolish poison, but i guess everything he was doing still wasnt enough.
Where is your pet during all of this? You should be able to support your druid no problem without worrying about the priest drinking because the pet prevents it. At best he can try to fear the pet and get in a few ticks of drink, but big deal. All you should really have to do is drop back to refresh frost trap when it runs out - a druid with a pillar and a frost trap should be able to kite a rogue all day no sweat, shadowstep or not. If he somehow needs further help then you can scatter the rogue. He needs to be putting faerie fire on the rogue to stop restealths, you can also throw a flare for him to run through as well. I don't see how you are losing the matchup, you got the priest drained all the way out, I am not seeing how a hunter and druid cannot get distance from a rogue with no outside support other than an OOM priest. When you have the priest OOM, just start killing the rogue. If he blows a bunch of cooldowns and runs off to try and stay alive, that's no big deal, since then your druid is free to drink, run across the map, or do whatever.
I have the ZG Serpent which spits poison and I'm lvl 66. I was just wondering if there is any reason to tame another pet seeing as mine can mask, poison, too?
Poison spit doesn't stack and has a long cooldown(10 seconds). Scorpid Poison on the other hand stacks to 5 that are individually removed and has 4sec cooldown. The only advantage Poison spit has is long range, it doesn't act as a significant poison cover for viper sting though.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.
Partially a bump as well as an edit.
I respecced my scorpid based off the suggestions through this thread.
Scorpid Sting rank 4
Claw rank 9
Cobra reflexes
140 Shadow res
140 nature res
60 frost/fire res
I haven't had the opportunity yet to try this spec in PvP/arena, but I did do some farming with it last night and already notice the speed increase the raw dps out. I also used the farming as a practice session to make sure I kept the poison up, the clefthoofs I was farming didn't have the HP to allow me to push it, but I was able to get the poison stacked to 3.
Any thoughts on my original post.
Thanks again for the info.

A scorpid won't increase your pve dps at all (unless your current pet is a sporebat) - their use is limited to Arenas where the poison stack will help mask a viper sting so that when your target tries to clense a viper, he may have to clense the scorpid dot first.
Howdy all! This'll be my first EJ post (addicted to this site) and I've got a couple of questions that I hope some of you more experienced arena hunters may be able to answer.
Firstly, talents. I'm currently 43/18 Marks/Surv, Armory Profile, (if im wearing trashgear at the time of armory refresh, ignore it, I wear full s1 to pvp) but I'm a bit confused as to just how useful some of the talents are. Repeatedly I have been told that Careful Aim is a must, but I have yet to find a build that does not end up with a spare point that ends up getting trashed somewhere. Is there a cookie cutter build that I simply havent come across yet? Also, how useful is the Survival Surefooted talent? At this point, I have the Surefooted talent, Surefooted enchant, and 5% snare resist meta gem because I find that my 2 man team with a frost mage keeps getting reamed by a rogue. Now that I think about it though, even having 25% resist to snares seems only so useful against an opponent who's attempting to snare you with both weapons multiple times per second... Does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with rogues? I've got perma-flaring down, and I've been using FREEZE trap so far. Is frost better for this situation?
This leads me into my next question aimed at the more experienced arena hunters. With my frost mage friend, Armory Profile , we've been losing more than we win. Granted we are both very new to arenas, but we're very interested to see if theres any viability in our class/spec combination. Does anyone have any suggestions as far as general strategy? We've been playing very defensively insofar (part of the reason I think we've been losing most of our matches, given that mage and hunter are pure dps classes) by trying to sheep someone and burn the other. I've been trying to plan out a more offensive strategy (hoping to force the other team into a defensive position and use the fact that both he and I have sufficient damage output / silence / snare ability to ruin a single player to turn the tide of the match our way) but I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with this frost-mage/MM-hunter combo (or similar combinations) so that I might find some initial direction.
Any comments anyone might have would be greatly appreciated. I'm open to all suggestions, even "omg wtf r u doing, do this instead n00b" ones :-P. Thanks in advance! (love the thread/forums by the way, immensely informative)
Hey all long time reader, first time poster in the PvP forums. I recently just got my hunter to 70 (Kaelindel - Kirin Tor), if you care to armory me, and was just lookin for some advice. First off Im not interested in respeccing to MM and I have no PvP gear yet so Im not expecting to crack the 1800+ ratings. Just looking to be somewhat competitive and not lose 10 games a week every week.
First off I will start with the spec. This is one I had looked it and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what needed to be changed, if anything. 41/20 BM Build
Secondly I have a question about pets. I have both a 70 Cat and 70 Ravager. Now the cat can do prowl, which when combined with me being a night elf can be a nice jump on the opponent. However the ravager I know is higher DPS. Which pet would be better to go with? As for the skills I was wondering should I be using bite/claw or bite/gore with the pets or just 1 skill to allow more focus dump? If so which skill should I be using?
Lastly, pet training points. Ive read what most people have to say here and so far it seems like Nature Resist, Shadow Resist and Stamina seem to be the popular choices for points. Is this correct or are there any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance for any replies I get.
EDIT: Oh yeah and before I forget. What kinda shot rotation should I be using?

If all you do is 2v2, take a point out of Entrapment and put it into Wing Clip, if you do not 2v2 at all I would max out Entrapment. You need your pet to keep up with Druids and other classes that will try and kite away, When you pet inevitably gets killed, a cheap 4 second resurrection is absolutely key (it normally takes 10 seconds and half your mana). The one point in Careful Aim is just there because it is the best use of that last trash point for your DPS.
Surefooted is useless unless you need the Hit Rating. Classes that can snare can generally do so with only the Global Cooldown as a limiting factor. 15% (or 5% on the boot enchant) is not worth it. There is enough Hit on the S3 gear that you should not need more than 1 point in it at best, and really you can just gem for the Hit you are missing.
I do not know that I would recommend a Marksman build for running with a Frost Mage. Marksman is built for longevity, which requires a healer. Either that or you will have to be on top of your CC 100% otherwise you'll end up getting snared and burned down.

You are missing a number of key abilities and took some that are not worthwhile. Improved Aspect of the Hawk is only really good for raid DPS in situations where you just stand and shoot for extended periods of time. In arena there is too much movement to really take advantage of this ability. Spirit Bond is generally worthless, I tried it out for a while and getting ~200 health every 10 seconds is nothing in PvP. Catlike Reflexes is also pretty much useless.
You can adjust points between Wing Clip and Entrapment based on which traps you use most often. You can also just go 41/20 and take Mortal Shots instead of getting some of the utility from Survival, but I think Hawk Eye and Entrapment/Wing Clip are some of the strongest Arena abilities you can get. You are missing both Improved Revive and Improved Mend Pet in your build. People will go after you pet to try and shut you down, rezzing it quickly is key, as is having the ability to get it out of CC (and on your target).
Pet abilities have already been covered, take their advice. As for Ravager vs. Cats, the DPS difference is minimal at best.
Shot rotation should be self-evident. If you're taking hits only use multi/arcane. If you are free to shoot your rotation should use steady shot between shots, replacing steady shot with arcane or multi when they are up.
Multi > auto > arcane > auto > steady > auto > steady > etc...

The scorpid is my arena pet primarily, the only reason I used it to farm was because I was farming while my arena partner was in Gruuls and I was changing my pet spec and UI and decided to farm while waiting.
Any thoughts on the 1st part of my post?

I just noticed you did not take avoidance 2. It can be situational, but it does cut damage in half from things like Sweeping Strikes, Arcane Nova, Consecrate, Blade Flurry, etc. I think you would be better off dropping both Fire Resistance and Claw (since scorpid poison is all you can have on at once if you actually want it to stack). You do not find enough fire mages in arena to justify resistances to it.
I forget exactly how I have my Scorpid setup, but it is something alone these lines:
Scorpid Poison 4 (because I didn't have 4 spare points for rank 5 and the damage doesn't matter)
Cobra Reflexes
Avoidance 2
140 Shadow resist
120-140 Nature resist
90-120 Frost Resist
I used to have claw, but those points seemed to be better spent on things that would keep my pet alive, rather than give me an ability that I would only turn on every once in a while when there was no poison dispel on the other team.
Another alternative if you are married to the idea of having claw is this:
Scorpid Poison 4
Claw 9
Cobra Reflexes
Avoidance 2
140 Shadow Res
140 Nature Res
90 Frost Res
Pet abilities have already been covered, take their advice. As for Ravager vs. Cats, the DPS difference is minimal at best.
Thanks so much for all your advice. I know my build was mixed up becuause I was levelling with it and hadn't bothered to respec since this was my first week of arenas and was looking for some advice. What I quoted above is the only question I have. I havent seen anything in regards to specific skills. My cat can use claw/bite so should I be using both or just bite or just claw? Also I notice you said nothing about dash. Do you not bother spending points on this becuase of the Beastial Swiftness talent? Thanks again.
Also heres kind of a revised build thats a mix of my old one and yours:

You only need 1 focus dump. Bite is slightly more DPS, but if you dont have the focus to use it, there is no point (and you will never have the focus for it since you can't stand and shoot like in raids). Just use claw. And yes, I would use dash/dive on any pet that can get it. The rest of it you can copy/paste from the scorpid setup.
About horde race selection, let's not forget tauren hunters still have a melee range disadvantage. A tauren is easier to lock down for melee then any other race. If i duel my friend's rogue he just stands in my model and nothing i can do really. An
Bigger model, around 2 yards bigger melee lockdown makes me wish i rolled a orc 2,5 years ago. hence why i always run around like a pirate in PVE.
Tauren ----->bow shoot range
orc ------>bow shoot range.
Great thread! I was wondering about suggestions for Hunter specific PvP/Arena UI addon's and layouts. My main is a resto Shammy, but I am working with my hunter to be my PvP fun toon. Anyways, any suggestions would be great. Thanks
