I did a lot of work on my own UI this weekend.. Started out with Metz's Shaman UI and modified from there. The final result has similar UFs and placement but certainly a good bit different.

I'm still undecided as to how I want to handle raid/party frames with it so I have both PitBull party frames showing and a Grid setup.

After trying a few different setups, I definitely prefer this location for frames.

What I've tried to do here is minimize the screen space my UI takes up. I used Magic Runes because I can compact the display and keep it separate from my Unit frame (which is on the default UI.) I also set MSBT up to show procs and effects such as RS coming up and SD procs right in the center of the screen. I also found a cooldown timer very useful, along with KnowItAll, which is a great debuff timer. It's very cmpact and saves space compared to other addons, in my opinion. On this UI, Omen goes directly above the minimap, right beside the disease timer. Note: This is the UI I used while leveling.

My UI



Unitframes are Pitbull, nice and simple.
The Rune display is Simple Rune. I've never used anything else, it's really easy to see what runes you have up.
Actionbars are BT4 with BF (Caith). I know I need to clean them and my keybinds up, but I am working on it.
The swing timer between the Unitframes belongs to Quartz, and just below it is a castbar that I don't really need but keep anyway because I'm used to it from my previous toons.
The disease bars on top of the target Unitframe also belong to Quartz. I believe they are called target buff bars, and they are extremely useful and easy to configure; there really is no need for Classtimers.
The text 'Rune Strike' is a custom event in SCT, and the green healing text coming out of the player frame is SCT also.
I use Elk Buff Bars.

After both reading this thread and thinking about my own needs, I came up with a heavy PowerAuras usage setup:



- Purple ring is Boneshield, it turns whiter as charges expire.
- Redish swords below is Blade Barrier, not as useful now, but made sure I spent my blood runes when I started tanking.
- Snowflake is IBF
- Yellow sign shows up when I either don't have HoW or SoE and I'm in combat.
- Green swords on top are for Cinderglacier/Fallen Crusader procs (PvP/DPS mainly)
- Teal shield on top is for avoidance trinkets/Lichborne.

Diseases and Unholy Blight are handled with NeedToKnow just below my runes, this is to have best possible disease uptime while making use of the SS glyph. Unholy Blight bugs a lot with NTK though and I don't really know why, many times the bar just dissapears when I refresh it which is weird.

I know ag_uf rune display is pretty terrible, but I haven't found a rune addon I like and have growned used to it. The thing that irks me, although I'm not sure if this is addon related, is that sometimes blood runes display as if they are death, but they are actually blood, and it messes up my rotation for a couple seconds until I realize it.

It's all about functionality. A pretty UI doesn't help me and I'm the only one seeing it.
It includes the standard stuff. MagicRunes and Elk's for the buff-/debuffbars.
I've tried other setups, but there weren't efficient.

I suspect this is yet another deathknight API bug. I noticed this among other rune display bugs, and downloaded an array of different rune mods to watch all at once, and they all displayed the same errors at the same time.

I tried to keep everything pretty central while trying not to cover my whole screen with addons. I have 2 DogTags that display Bone Shield stacks and whether I have Horn/SoE. The buff timer bar is the only thing that i really have to look away from the center for, which is really just Bone Shield. All my procs are handled with Power Auras...


Red upper half of the circle is Fallen Crusader proc. Orange lower half of the circle is Mirror of Truth. Blue dashes are Freezing Fog. Cross swords are Killing Machine. Finally, the purple ring is Haunted Dreams.

Ive played with most the rune mods out there but most just seem to be to gaudy for what im after. nRune (slightly modified) seemed to fit just right.

I didn't much fancy waiting for an addon author to create what I was looking for, so I remembered the extreme level of customisation afforded by OpenRDX Open RDX at WowInterface and made this:



Currently, the disease timers and proc bars are created with Elkano's Buff Bars, but I may shift them into RDX too. Not especially visible in the screenshot is the light grey background behind the bars and rune timers, which helps make them more visible.

What's the process to get this set up? I tried something like this when I first got Power Auras, but I couldn't figure out how to do it.

You can set auras to only show when you have X amount of stacks of the buff, I suppose you could make copies that show when you have 1 stack, 2 stacks, 3 stacks etc., altering only the color of each one.

Pretty much yes, only problem is I had to redo the timer position for the 4 copies because for some reason that part wouldn't copy over. Also, but this is personal taste really, I made it so that charge 5 had a start animation and charge 1 hade an end animation, and the rest just fade into eachother. However, while writing this I came to realize that maybe it would be better for me to make them all have a transition animation, in order to have an even more direct way of seeing the charges expire.

PowerAuras is a very interesting way to solve the problem of displaying information about the buffs and debuffs. I'm going to look in to this and possibly customize some of the graphics. I'll post my mockup later.

If you have issues with NeedToKnow, check out the comments posted HERE on WoWInterface. e4e gives a few suggested fixes that are pretty easy to implement, and have fixed all my issues with it.

Another problem I had other than Unholy Blight being weird was the Bone Shield bar not refreshing properly if it already had charges left when I recast it.

I've got my UI mostly where I want it now, both in terms of functionality and lightweight-ness. One large issue that I can't find a good answer to is displaying target debuffs without it being incredibly sloppy. Normally I hide all debuffs on the target and just go by an external tracker for my debuffs or any stuff I would need to know for arena (Cyclone, HoJ, etc), but doing stuff like riding a bronze drake in Oculus throws me off. I guess I'll give have to track things like those drake charges too.

A lot of UIs I see show all the debuffs on a target, even worse with OmniCC timers running on them, and I think it just looks awful. Unless you're a raid leader I highly doubt you would ever need to see any of it, yet it takes up so much space and causes so much noise from all the different icons.

I have a really annoying problem with my localized interface : I can't find an alert addon that works with "Death Trance !". All my other translated buff/proc work.
It appears that it's related to the white space at the end of the french translation : "Transe mortelle !".
And indeed, I have the same problem with "Slam!" ->"Heurtoir !"

This is really frustrating since that's the most useful proc that doesn't work. I tried with TellMeWhen, NeedToKNow, DK.Notes, and others I don't remember.

Does someone know an addon that work with localized version of "Death Trance!".

Edit : I answered to myself in case of it might help future readers. EventAlert, which uses the spell ID instead of the spell name, should work with every localized interfaces. (It works at least for the french one)

I'm currently using this UA. In a none solo the action bars wouldn't be shown and instead there would be boss timers/pvp timers but when I'm solo it just looks a bit empty so I enbale the bars again.
Timer above nRune is just for horn of winter. I use nRune and magic runes the former because I like the look and the latter because I wanted a positionable RP bar right below my rune timer.

This UI is not made by him. You can get it here: Raynes Burnt Black Cherry Lite : WoWInterface Downloads : Minimalistic Compilations

And the raidframes are Pitbull.

Seriously, can people please stop just saying "heres my ui: [screenshot]"? No one gives a shit what your UI looks like unless you're going to talk about how you've done things and why. In the main 'post your UI' thread they are very strict on this so I don't see why it should be accepted here.

This thread is meant to be about Death Knight-specific UI challenges and the design processes we use to overcome them, not a pointless collection of screengrabs.

And for the "information stuff":

Why it looks like it looks

No extra runic bar because I have already one in my player unitframe. Buffs/Debuffs below and above my player frame so I can see my debuffs fast (-> grobbulus). Same for buffs.

For Runes: Using Runevolution because it's quite nice how it displays the runes. It's position is there so I can see it all the time.

About actionbars, always centered, dont really need them that big.

Now the target frame: My debuffs are the first, so I can see them clearly, ToT text color changes to yellow when target is targeting me. Buffs are small because I dont need them all the time - but disabling them isnt a way for me.

I use MSBT for dmg etc, above my player frame is the incoming damage/healing, above the target is the outgoing damage. In the middle (where the "Fel Intelligence" buff is) are my proccs or buff gains/loss.

And why it is so "minimalism" - because I want to see the f--king game and not panels and stuff.

What's missing at the moment?

I still have to write a nice small debuff display because I sometimes miss my Sudden Death proc.
Also I dont like bars to be honest, so need something different... that is the real "problem".

Addons used

Pitbull for unit frames
Satrina Buff Frames for buff frames
Bartender4 for bars
ButtonFacade for skinning BT4+SBF
MikScrollingBattleText for scrolling combat text
AzCastBar for casting bar

These are the "main" addons you see, minimap and stuff are self written and I think its not needed to mention them.

You may have to change the size of the buttons in Runica so that it works. When I was written the mod I hadn't OmniCC so don't know why it is not working since I am just reskinning the original Rune Frame.

i see no problem in posting cleverly made ui's without long posts about why they did what they did. Most the time I don't anyone is really reading word for word cause people are just trying to get some ideas on how to make their Ui's. Posting mods that are a bit unusual are always helpful.

As much as the weird unbalanced layout on my screen makes the aesthetic part of me cringe, I really like it. Primarily because I play on a 16x9 monitor, and the number of vertical pixels onscreen are so much more precious than horizontal ones. So this way I clear most of my stuff out to the right or left of the screen so the middle has as much top-to-bottom with nothing in it as possible.

The hud is IceHUD. I *really* like the rune and RP on it. I also use power auras classic - that T-shaped thing is a visual reminder that my rune strike is lit up. I have an icon like that for most of my procs. It's really handy. I use fortress and libdatabroker for everything I used to use fubar for.

Besides the actual layout on-screen, I'm happy with everything. If I had a better balance, it'd be better, but for now it is very functional and has very few wasted pixels.

Yeah that was my bad. Sorry about that.

Anyway, I wanted to make everything easy to see especially my spelltimer. Still not sure if thats the right spot where I want to put my spelltimer. I might switch it with omen(which is next to spelltimer) to better see my dots and buffs.



The reason why I have ForteXorcist cooldown sitting where its at so I can see what is on cooldown easier since I don't use OmniCC and also it's next to MagicRunes.

As for the Ag_UnitFrames, I wanted them to easy to be close to my bar(same as everyone else) but I didn't want my buffs and debuffs to show up on them because it would be more of a pain to see what is one the mob/boss. Kinda the reason why I use ForteXorcist. Also I do have the extra Runebar under my player frame but I might take it out, not sure on that yet.

I use MSBT for the same reason as everyone else. I am still working on moving everything/changing colors/text to where I want it to be.

Still haven't found a good minimap mod that I like but if anyone has some suggestions on that, please let me know.

I use Bartender4, wanted them to be on the bottom and centered like everyone else.

This is a cutout of my UI, it displays omen (left) recount (right) and in the middle the rune section with addiontal racial and two trinkets.

The Runesection is the "RuneWatch" Addon which i modified. Due to this is not my work i can not publish this version but wanted to show it is easily possible to make a decent and big Runeaddon without showing stuff i personally do not need, like diseases or an extra runepowerbar. Both diseases and Runepower are implemented in my xPerl addon with does the job for me.

Maybe if there is someone who thinks the RuneWatch Change is appealing i will ask the Dev of it wheather he can maybe implement a realy combact version like the one I did.

Question regarding Power Auras and Death Knight UI's.


Can anybody share or point me to a lua / Power Auras config made for DW DPS procs (KM, Trinkets, Talons, Runeprocs)?
Right now this little mod looks like a bitch to set up properly.
So if i can shortcut a bit by using your config as a starter, i would be grateful.

My UI is pretty simple. I use the rune display provided by ag_Unitframes. I us Satrina Buff Frames for the buff displays above and in between my unit frames. Basically, when I'm targeting a friendly target, I see the normal icon buff display above them. When I target a hostile unit, it will show me my disease timers above their unit frame. Above my unit frame is buffs that I care about, and in between the unitframes as large icons are the short term buffs/procs that I want to know.
