[Balance/Resto] Guides and Spreadsheets, Going Forward
Starting a new thread since this has to do with all four of my projects on this forum (two guides and two spreadsheets).
So people may have noticed I've been slow about posts and updates lately. This isn't totally new, since I always updated in bursts and often had some breaks, but this one probably will continue on and may be a sort of indefinite hiatus. I haven't been raiding since Juggernaut stopped over the summer and I'm starting a major new job next month so I haven't been putting much effort into finding a new environment for serious raiding. At this point the earliest I would do it again is many months from now when I'm settled into a new routine, but even there there's no guarantee.
Now, this doesn't all mean I'm curtailing all WoW activities right away. In many ways my ancillary projects--the guides here, WrathCalcs and TreeCalcs, and all the activity in the social sphere--where what I really liked doing in WoW for a while now. And I do plan to keep posting here and contributing in whatever other ways for as long as I have any relevant WoW knowledge (and since a lot of you reading this also talk to me on twitter and other places, I'm certainly not going anywhere in that respect either). But the point of all this is that 4.3 is the first time when I'm not necessarily promising to be up to date with any Druid changes going on.
As far as guides, Carebare should be doing her usual sweep for people to maintain the OP's when the patch is nearer. The Resto guide has always been a bit more barebones, just the mechanical info and my basic spell descriptions, and I think a lot of people are around who could keep it up to date and even add a lot of detail. Balance one has generally been more thorough and basically just needs maintaining. There are other good Balance resources around now as well (IIRC when I first started there weren't so much), but it would be great if we could keep the one on this site very authoritative.
---
After all that preface though, the big issue here is the spreadsheets. TreeCalcs but esp. WrathCalcs is pretty complex internally. And while I've always made this work reasonably well, I'm not actually an experienced coder and the innards of those sheets can be confusingly organized and even worse are basically not commented at all. A lot of computations are giant expressions crammed into one cell rather than being laid out step-by-step. And so basically, I want to be around to give help to whoever winds up trying to work with the sheets more going forward.
There are definitely people on the forum who have shown a good understanding of the sheet and posted comments a lot (and in fact, the way I wound up with WC in the first place is that I just used to make suggestions to it a lot and eventually Adoriele got busy). But I figured it was better to post publicly because if multiple people are interested in trying to help out with it, we can have some collaboration on the thread. Anyway though, tell me if you're interested at all in helping out with the modeling in WC/TC (Tecton does the frontend and gear selector), and if you are, this would be a great time to go through the guts of the sheet and ask questions on this thread about what things do. Understanding why WC does what it does is a great vehicle for talking about Moonkin theorycraft in general, which is part of why it's great to have anyone in the discussion who wants to be.
In particular, if you'd want to be responsible for maintaining the main sheet, tell me. This often requires significant activity in short bursts, when there are changes to the game (sometimes rare, not every content patch even has class changes). When they do come, you'd have to try to incorporate them into the model. But in between it's mostly just tracking down any numbers that might change by testing yourself or asking people. I would like to see both sheets go on and still be in heavy use though, and I'll probably be inclined to help with any changes as needed, but I'm not necessarily going to be around for every update.
-------
TLDR:
--If you might want to take over one or both OP's, talk to Carebare when she looks for such people before 4.3 (unless she says something different). Whoever it is in both cases, I can send you the plaintext version of the post with all the formatting that I keep locally. So you can basically just pick up from what's already there.
--Anyone who wants to be involved with the spreadsheets, this is a good time. Will need someone who wants to be in charge of handing main updates, but anyone who's interested in the modeling should chime in. In both cases I'll try to give any necessary explanations (this thread is as good a place as any) of how any aspect of it works.
