mouseover macros
I have sort of a noob question about mouseover macros. How does a mouseover macro work? Does it have to be bound to a mouse button? What are the advantages to using a mouseover macro?

A mouseover macro allows you to cast a spell at a target your mouse cursor is hovering over without having to actually target them. Healers use them a lot because it cuts down on the human lag of targeting someone in grid, then casting a healing spell.
For hunters a mouseover macro is useful for sending your pet after a totem without having to switch targets allowing you to continue DPS'ing. Also useful for Master's Call for a fight like freya+3 when someone is rooted, click the mouseover macro while hovering your mouse cursor over the rooted persons name in your raid frames.

#showtooltip Steady Shot
/console Sound_EnableSFX 0
/cast [modifier:shift] Serpent Sting
/cast [modifier:ctrl] Black Arrow
/cast Steady Shot
/cast [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/console Sound_EnableSFX 1
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()
Ok so I took this from an earlier post and added a Black Arrow modifier. Reading further back I saw that I can shorten it to Mod to save characters (it's at 243). The question I have is can I "Crowbar" in Explosive Shot and/or Kill Shot anywhere? Or would it be better to map those two shots to my two thumb buttons? Because I think this covers all of my shots as far as SV goes. I personally don't mind hearing the sound effects so I can eliminate those lines for space if applicable. Also some users have been putting spell rank and others have not does it have any impact anymore?
Thank you for your time.

Changing this
/cast [modifier:shift] Serpent Sting
/cast [modifier:ctrl] Black Arrow
/cast Steady Shot
/cast [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
|
into this
/use [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/use [modifier:shift] Serpent Sting; [modifier:ctrl] Black Arrow; Steady Shot
saves some characters and ensures that the Kill Command will actually fire

Iru, doesn't the macro
/use [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
mean you're activating Kill Command when the pet has a target? I apologize if I'm missing the obvious, but under what circumstances will your pet not have a target? Doesn't the pet maintain its target even when pulled out of the fight for whatever reason?

The reason for the conditional is to prevent Kill Command from being wasted, e.g.: - the pet is on passive and not attacking but you are.
- pet's target has just died but you're still spamming the macro
- you hit a shot command by accident, e.g. while looting.
That said, you could probably lose the conditional and be safe enough if you really needed the extra characters

Anyone has ever tried to write a macro to shot a special without triggering Auto Shot?
I know mouseover macros can do that, but I'd like one that I can press after I have a target.
I've tried with /stopattack or /cleartarget after the shot line, but it still fires at least one autoshot, and I want to preserve my MD charges for specials without having to move.

Can't be done without moving. EVERY special shot triggers the Auto Shot (why I'm always complaining about macros that include /cast !Auto Shot) and, just like the melee swing timer only movement prevents it from dealing damage.
One thing that can be worth trying is immediately turning 180 as soon as the special is fired. That way you don't burn your sniper buff for example.

Ther is an add-on called super duper macro that will allow you to use longer macro sequences

Changing modifier keys...
I am running out of space for some macros, so I changed my movement keys to SEDF to allow me to use 'A'. I was now wondering how I can make 'A' a modifier key, anyone know? Can this be done in Blizzard settings?
I want to be able to do things like :
A+1
A+2
A+3
...etc, just like Shift+1, Shift+2...

What you're asking for can't be done as the definition of a modifier key actually happens outside of the WoW client. What you might try instead is either using the /click functionality to break your macros into pieces or using one of the various addons that extend macro lengths.

You could also use a [free] program like KeyTweak to remap your A key to one of the existing modifiers, like Alt or Control. This wouldn't necessarily gain you any keybinds though if you were already using Alt or Control in your existing bindings, but it would make it a bit easier to reach (I usually remap capslock to Left-Ctrl, and change the Left Windows button to Capslock).

Need help
I need your help with a macro creation.
I want to Macro Furious Howl into my Chimera shot Marco.
So this is my normal macro:
#showtooltip Chimera Shot
/cast [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast Chimera Shot
So next i tryed this
#showtooltip Chimera Shot
/cast [target=pettarget,exists] Kill Command
/cast Furious Howl
/cast Silencing Shot
/cast Chimera Shot
what happend is that i got the Furious Howl casted silencing shot casted an Chimera casted. all good so far. but the problem is in the moment i use that marco my pet attaks my target even if i set it on passiv to not get killed in fire ore something. an it switches to my current target witch i both dont want.
Can anyone here help me with this?

That would stop it from casting FH if the pet isn't attacking though, which I imagine isn't what he wants.

I know it was posted in the patch notes, but I didn't see any mention of it here. For those of us who have some massive code in our macro and a lot of them involve targets so for example:
/cast [target=mouseover] Scatter Shot
We are now able to save a bit of space with these macros by replacing "target=" with "@". So the above macro would look like:
/cast [@mouseover] Scatter Shot
At least I'm pretty sure this is the correct way to put it.

Hello mates, I am seeking a macro about Saurfang encounter. What I am seeking is, to mark the blood beast that I target with skull or cross and taunt him via distracting shot.
If I manuelly try to mark mob and taunt its a loss of 3.5-4 seconds, if I use hunters mark than taunt the mob again its a loss of 2,5-3 seconds. I seeked but couldnt find any macro to fit in it. I will be very happy if some friend can solve this macro issue. Thanks.

You can set a raid mark on your target like this:
/run SetRaidTargetIcon("target",1)
The 1 is the symbol, change it to get a different symbol (the range is 1-8).

Hey yall, I have been looking all over the place and was curious if its possible to macro MD to a set raid mark such as skull. For example atm I have MD set to my alt+t and it /cast [target="main tanks name here"] Misdirection, with some added fluff thrown in for things such as #showtooltip etc. I was curious if i could modify this in any way to have it cast MD on say Star if the main tank is marked with a star raid marker...If that doesnt make sense I can revise it once i get home and have access to the full macro/other things
PS: the keybind isnt too important because i have all my bars keybound individually for no modifiers, shift and ctrl...

You cannot target units by raid icons, so no.

I've used (thanks to Allara) following macro on Saurfang:
/tar Blood Beast
/run SetRaidTargetIcon("target",1)
/cast Distracting Shot
/yell Nuke Star!
The problem is that if I want to be as fast as possible and hit the macro a little bit too soon, I actually shoot Distracting Shot to Saurfang instead.
My question is that would it be possible to add a condition to Distracting Shot in the macro so that it only fires when Blood Beast has spawned? Something similar to one we use in kill command macro:
/cast [target=Blood Beast,exists] Distracting Shot

/cleartarget
/targetexact Blood Beast
/stopmacro [noexists]
/script SetRaidTarget("target", 1);
/cast Distracting Shot
/y Nuke Star!
I think that's the correct syntax. Clears target and tries to target a Blood Beast (and will only target Blood Beast, so make sure spelling is 100% correct). If you do not have a target (i.e. Blood Beast), it won't do the rest of the macro.
